Decent korean food.

Ok, I shall change my style of review this time - Structured and according to what we ordered.

Grilled chicken on a pan (Ddak galbi) - $19.5
Only 3 pieces of rice cake, and few pieces of meat. Rather dry. Taste-wise, it was done the right way. If only it has more gravy and includes potatoes, like they do it in Chuncheon, hometown of ddak galbi.

Seafood pancake (Hae mul pajeon) - $19
Instead of the floury, chewy pancake you typically get, this is heavy on the egg they used. Good for those who loves to eat omelette pancake, bad for those who miss tearing the pancake apart with their metal chopsticks, while downing bowls and bowls of makkeoli on a rainy day ;)

Spicy ham, hotdogs cabbage soup in a pot medium sized (Budae cchigae) - $43
Warned by Teck, but we ordered anyway. We expected yummy thick soup caused by the rice cake, but there was no ricecake, so end up having watery soup. The noodles were also not springy. Well, at least it retained what it had to - hotdogs, spams. It's known as military soup because of the american military in Korea, thus the use of hotdogs, hams and spams. Oh ya, where were the hams? Anyway, the only saving grace was the spiciness that kept it exciting.

Hotstone bowl mixed rice (Dolsot bibimbap) - $15
I didn't try, no comments. My dear chingus, care to comment?

2 rice for mixing into grilled chicken leftovers to make fried rice - $8
Not sure if they added extra gravy and ingredients to make the fried rice as we left some cabbage and sauce from the grilled chicken for them to work with. If it's just rice, then not sure if $8 for 2 rice plus work to cook it slightly is worth it.

Ricecake ice cream (from King's) - 6 balls for $10.5
They loved it. Not me. I prefer going to the nearby hawker center or dessert shop to chew some ah-balling.

Service charge - $11.5
I am happy to pay the service charge. They were very friendly and attentive. Probably because the restaurant was pretty quiet. It's a monday, that's probably why. They also helped to serve the soup, etc. If there isn't any service charge, I'll gladly pay 10% or more for the tips. i still believe in the tipping system.

Gst - $0!!
A pleasant surprise :D

Total - $126.5 for 4 girls and 2 guys.

Food/beverage
6 marks for falling below expectations. It may be unfair to them as I'm judging based on my 4 months experience in Korea, but since it's korean food, why not?

Ambience
8 - We were seated in a private room. It was good as we could dine and laugh and joked comfortably.

Value
7.5 because I can't really decide. Since it's korean food in SG, price tends to be slightly high. Mee Goreng in Korea cost 9000 Won (about SGD15 during the time we were in KR). We feel full. Who wouldn't if they have ate rice, drank all the soup and stuffed the side dishes into their mouth non-stop (free refill, typical of KR restaurant)? Ok, there wasn't much meat. Just carbo, pickles, soup. Full, but not satisfied. Unanimous view from 6 people who spent 4 months eating and drinking in Korea.

Service
9.9 on a Monday evening. Quiet day. Other days, I can't comment. I believe it won't differ too much. Koreans are known for good services, at least in my opinion.

Favourite Joint For Korean Food

Don't really know where to eat good korean food, but I must say Jang Won is decently good.

Run by a Korean family, the service staffs are all Korean with very good service attitude. Never fail to feel welcome at the restaurant.

We often have the GinSeng Chicken and BU Gol Gi (Korean beef on hot plate), the server will even cook for you unless you ask them not to.

Overall experience is good and consistant, i go back quite often.

Must Tries: GinSeng Chicken, Bulgolgi

GO Korean!

I must say, I don't really know where to go for good Korean food so I am actually already quite satisfied with this friendly joint.

Service staff makes you feel at home and are all smiles. Good. Distributes the ginseng soup.

Side dishes are aplenty and refillable. Good Good. Only concern is that compared to the last time I was there, the "taste" seemed to have changed even more to suit the Singaporean palate. Which is, in my opinion, not so good cos' it will then be, not so "korean" anymore.

Ordered:
bbq pork (my fav! super tasty)
Ginseng Chicken (chicken quite meaty but the soup..it turned cold too fast. Sad. Ginseng was not overpowering though. +)
Egg pancake with vege (nicely done)
Shi2 Guo1 Ban4 Fan4 (I HEART this! The sauce + eggs + chopped veg went very very well with the rice)

Very satisfying meal overall. Great to see Koreans dining in too because that shows that it must be of a certain standard! Indeed, the food here tastes quite like the stuff I had in Korea, only in a cleaner setting! Bonus.
