| Dessert in a desert
There are not many decent dessert-centric outlets in Singapore - at least not many that offer a good variety of Chinese / Local dessert delicacies with an innovative touch to it, opens till in the later evening, and is not part of a food court operation (therefore somewhere with a more manageable crowd).
Chancing upon this dessert outlet in the middle of busy Chinatown is to me, like finding water in a desert. Scare and therefore made all the better too.
They have a good variety of choices - from those that are more fluid and watery, to the thicker and stronger on the tastebuds. Among those that I've tried - from the glutinous rice balls in sweet ginger soup base, gingko nut barley, to its mango with sago and a scoop of ice ceam... cold. All of them leaves you tantalising and coming back for more.
Prices are reasonable as well - on average between $3 to $5 for one serving.
However, as dessert places are less about a fill-your-stomach event, while it is more about resting your feet between shopping around Chinatown, or just to kill time between lunch and dinner, even as an excuse for a heart-to-heart chat - this place lacks of an relaxing ambience for the above. Not as cosy as I would have liked it to be, and its bright day-light getup at night is unsuitable for a night wind-down after dinner.
However, for busy shoppers and diners who just want a dessert-quickie, this is the perfect place for you. |

| Desserts
They are famous for their ginger boiled milk, but I'm not a 'ginger' person, so I didn't try that. But according to my hubby and mum-in-law, it's very very good.
I will always order the walnut cream with a layer of 'milk skin'. They call it 'shuang1 pi2 nai3'. You can order it with walnut, almond, black sesame or peanut cream (cannot remember if there are others). The layer of 'skin' on top of your cream keeps it warm while you slowly enjoy your dessert. It's so soft and has a slight milky taste to it (not too overwelming). The cream is also very healthy, not too sweet like the other places I've tried.
They were used to be a few shops away from their current place. It seemed bigger at their old premises. They installed aircon at their new place now, so the enclosed area may have seemed smaller to me. |
