  1. Jumbo @ Stadium Walk

    Feb 11, 2008
Went down to Jumbo @ Stadium Walk on a thursday nite after work with another 2 of my eating buddies. Not a short distance walk from Kallang MRT thou. Went pass the old kallang stadium for the last time, before it gets tear down. Little exercise before the show down.
We got there about 7.30pm, (being a singaporean I've already booked a table the previous day afraid that the place would be packed as CNY is near.) but surprisingly the rest. is only half-filled when we arrived. Almost immediately we were ushered to our table and the war begins..

    Menu Of The War ;

1.) Chilli Crab with Fried Mini Buns- Fresh Chilli Crab with lots of crab meat. Crab lover if u miss this, I dunno wat to say. The reason why we ordered this instead of the black pepper crab is because the sauce of this dish actually goes well with the fried mini buns we requested. Thumbs up for this dish ! Eat it while it’s hot too! Yummy!

2.) Scallop with Yam rings - Overall not a bad dish, could do without it thou. This is a light taste dish; for those who have taste buds for stronger stuff like myself, the scallops are close to tasteless...the yam ring is not bad thou.

3.) Prawn with Cereal - Like what one of my eating buddies said, when this dish is nicely done you can practically leave nothing behind except for an empty plate. The whole prawn including its shell is crispy. Not bad, I like...Yummy!

4.) Fried Chicken with Garlic - Jumbo to me is not only famous for its seafood I find that the rest.'s fired chicken is also one of the better ones I've eaten so far. ( esp. with the special salt ) Yummy!

5.)Fried rice with Seafood - Ordered this cuz we were thinking of eating some rice lor...not bad, its not the oily type. Not as good as DTF's thou. Can do without it for some.

6.) (steam) Seabass in Soya Sauce - Fresh fish always taste better! Just like home cooked fish. Fish meat very juicy and sweet, together with the sauce makes it taste even better. Yummy!

Yes, We ordered about 7 dishes that night. Ppl sitting next to us actually stared at our table cuz its almost fully packed with food!
The overall rating for Jumbo@Stadium Walk is not bad, our plates were change regularly during the whole course, so was our tea. Waitresses were accommodating. Good Job I'll say.
The rest. provides tables both indoor & outdoor (where u can eat by the kallang river ) dinning too.
Did I mention about the $50 Jumbo voucher I had? I used it to offset the bill and we end up paying around $38 bucks each. Cheap!

  2. Lobster Heaven

    May 11, 2007
When we reach at 6.30pm, the place was not full, BUT they are all reserved! And the seats available are the outdoor dining area. Wait man, don’t start blaming me that i did not make a reservation. I tried. I called at 4 but no one answer the phone. So we had to make do with the outdoor area, and o boy, it was raining cats and dogs. The waitress even had to carry an umbrella to bring the dishes over.

There are many methods of cooking the lobster, my fav is salad lobster of couse, you can also steam it with soya souce, minced garlic, or stir-fried with ginger & spring onion, braised with superior broth, stired-fried with cheese & butter, and baked with cheese & bacon. Honestly i never had the luxury of trying all types of cooking methods, just had steamed one, deep-fried, and salad lobsters before. And i prefer salad lobster. BUt the baked with cheese & bacon do sounds interesting, mayb i will try that if i got the chance next time. We had the Australian lobster which was $120 for 1KG

Salad lobster is simple Super-licious. Only one word can describe it, Heavenly. The salad lobster had lots of fruits, the thick salad cream and mixed fruit plus the lobster meat, makes it irresistable man! 5 out of 5

Next up, the Singapore famous black pepper crab! Its Sri-Lanka king crab they called it. We had two 1.2KG crab, both crabs in pepper. Hmm the black pepper crab are too not bad, but there are better one out there, that is No Signboard Restaurant! 3.5 out of 5

Mee Goreng! Jumbo is famous for their Mee Goreng i think, its very nice i assure you. Must try if go Jumbo, but at $8 for small serving, its a tad too expensive. Pity the price, if not it will be perfect score. 4.5 out of 5

Crispy Baby Squid. Crispy it is, and a little over burned. I am still feeling thirsty now that i reached home after eating it. Not my cup of squid, at $8 its not really worth your while unless you are a fan of fried squids, i rather spend the $8 on another plate of Mee Goreng. 1.5 out of 5

Thats all folks, i will come to the price now because its a bit complicated. Our lobster which flown specially from Australia for us to savour cost $96, i estimate it to be around 800g, but because we got a special coupon, we got 50% off! Horray! It only cost us $48 for one Lobster, cheap yep? The crab is $33 per Kg, We had two, and it comes up to about $75.90. And the crispy baby squid and Mee Goreng like i say earlier is $8 per plate. So our total bill adds up to $192.10 before discount. We had the 50% for lobster, and another 10% off because we had the Jumbo rewards card

The service, eh is a case of over-enthusiastic against a group of slow diners who want to finish every scrap of food on the plate. I have totally nothing against their service, the waitress keep on changing plates for us, this is good because the crab have lots of shell. But when we haven really finish our lobster and mee goreng, they already want to clear the plates as well. Hello? we want value for money, every scrap of food is important to us. LOL. Besides that i don’t really have or can complaints because they do not have service charge. Except for the calling in of reservation.

All in all, Jumbo is not bad la, its a famous seafood restaurant in Singapore with so many branches. However, we still unanimously agree that No Sign Board Restaurant is a tad higher level than Jumbo for its crab, no complaints about the lobster. I heard the East Coast headquarter produce the best food among its outlets, but we had to go to indoor stadium because the 50% coupon for lobster is not able to use in East coast branch. You can’t get the best of both worlds i guess.

    • A condiment of discontent

      Aug 14, 2009
Ketchup. Whether it leads to satisfaction or discontent at the end of a meal depends. For example, I totally hate ketchup in bak chor mee while perfectly happy with it in sweet and sour pork.

The window of discontent at Jumbo last night came from the liberal use of ketchup in the famous chilli crab. Good chilli crab's gravy to me should be very spicy, thick, slightly sour, choked full of the goodness of egg white and complete with a tiny tinge of curry taste. Neither the sourness nor sweetness nor curry flavour should overshadow the presence of chilli, hence the name "Chilli Crab". Jumbo's chilli crab have degenerated to using too much ketchup to achieve the texture and taste. While the crab was fresh and succulent, the chef seem to do much injustice to the freshness of seafood by overdrowning the dish with large quantity of this off-the-shelf condiment. Can a some authority punish the first person who introduce ketchup into cooking indiscriminately please?

Other than the above. I am actually quite happy with my meal. The pepper crab was peppery with a hint of butter hence deserving of its name "Pepper Crab". The drunken prawns ($20) were fresh, crunchy and the soup was yummy with shaoxing wine and hint of chinese herbs hence deserving of its name "Drunken Prawns".

So if crab needs pepper to be yummy pepper crab and prawn needs shaoxing wine to be yummily drunken then why let ketchup steal the show for chilli crab? Life is complicated enough so the act of eating shouldn't be.

      1. Jumbo the BIG name in Seafood!

        Oct 21, 2009
We'd decided on this perfect day to give our noble, beloved Mummy a little treat!

There is only one reason why we are here...to feast on Chilli crab!

        Chilli Crab ($40/kg)
It's been ages since we ate chilli crab. We love to dip the fried man tou into the sweet, spicy crab gravy. But the man tou here was so TINY! One more man tou for each of us please!

The flesh was thick, fresh and juicy, with the sweetness of crab meat lingering in our mouths. We simply adore chilli crab, or should we say chilli crab sauce with fried man tou?! The only grouse was that there isn't any crab roe! Perhaps it was a male crab? o.O

        A & J's rating: 4.25/5

        Salted Egg Golden Prawn $20
This is one of Jumbo's signature dish. The salted egg sauce certainly added a nice twist in taste as compared to some other common prawn dishes. Each mouthful was savoury and the sweetness of the fresh prawns simply burst in our mouths. This dish was well-balanced with hint of spice and sweetness. Crunchy, savoury and sweet prawns, irresistible indeed!

        A & J's ratings: 4.25/5

        Stir-fried Broccoli with Garlic ($12)
Just your usual safe broccoli dish. Decent albeit being a little salty, nothing to shout about.

        A & J's rating: 3.75/5

Steamed Cod Fish with Chilli ($9)
An easily forgotten dish... the only thing we could remember was that we had only 3 mouthfuls each. Enough said. (A: I believe my mummy can cook this better than them! Besides, this serving can be easily finished by one person.)

        A & J's ratings: 3.5/5

We only ordered 4 items for the three of us. The chilli crab with the fried mantou itself was filling enough. But we can't help pondering whether the food at Jumbo was worth the price. Just think for a second, $20 for 8 Salty Egg Golden Prawns and $9 for a tiny steamed fish? For the price, you can easily get a better deal elsewhere. Next time we will just go for their chilli crab only!

        • Still going strong!

          Jul 6, 2009
We had both the black pepper crab and chilli crab here, it's delicious, the portions are huge and meaty. I find it better than the Jumbo restaurant at Riverside Point, perhaps the chilli crab at the latter has been toned down for touristy tastebuds and doesn't taste like the real thing.

The service is prompt and efficient - one of the most impressive things is that the staff really bustle around and respond efficiently when you ask for anything. In fact, both their local and foreign staff are equally well trained. Definitely a good place to bring your family for a hearty local meal!
