The food does mambo jumbo!
Aug 19, 2008As most of us well know.. Jumbo is a famous seafood restaurant chain in Spore alongside names like no signboard and long beach.. where they pride on their chilli crabs n cereal prawns etc.. so is the food really mambo jumbo? haha.... ;p
Well there r many branches of Jumbo all over Spore n i've patronised a few... if u wana get e bustling seafood centre feel for your tourist frens then go to East Coast.. if u wana finer dining version go to riverwalk.. but if u want e real good food that Jumbo can offer then head to SGCC where e standard has not plummet... Haha of coz with me staying in e area.. i tend to go to e sgoon garden more .. so let me review on my most recent visit n here's e dishes we had tried:
Scallop with Yam Ring ($14) - my mum n i lurveee this dish.. i might b a bit biased since i lurve yam so to me this dish rock! but i do suggest giving it a try for e scallop n yam n e sweet sauce makes a good starter...
Stir-fried French Bean with Prawns ($8) - this is my 1st time ordering this n it turns out to b a pleasant surprise.. not too bad esp when e rest of e dishes r kinda "heavy"..
Beef fillet with Pepper ($24) - my bro absolutely adores this dish! n who can blame him when it's so yummy? it's $8/portion so we ordered 3 portions... e beef's tender n e pepper sauce really complement e meat so it's a yum dish! must-try!!! n pls ask for extra sauce!!! it's that yummy!
Salted Egg with Prawns ($20) - normally i would go for e cereal prawns coz i still feel tat Jumbo makes e best cereal prawns .. so do give e cereal prawns a try! but back to e salted egg with prawns.. a new dish on e block.. it turns out to b fab .. but then again i lurrve salted egg so haha of coz i would love this dish.. but this is good...on return visit this is not tat fab though... but on another return this is FANTASTC!! it's e wet wet version tat i likey! yum!
HK Steamed Soon Hock Fish ($35) - e fish is fresh but wat rocks is e sauce... i do like e way jumbo do e HK steam n it goes great with steamed rice!! update: there's another fish that is wayyyy better than soon hock n that's "ni luo hong" or red tilapia (not e grey or black tilapia mind u)..fresh from e tank so it's super fresh n goes great with e sauce! !
Chilli Crabs with man tou ($64) e crab was abt 1.6kg so it's pretty big... jumbo's chiili crab sauce tend to b on e sweeter side... i guessed more chilli n tomato sauce go in .. but it's very delish as well.. i tend to prefer jumbo's chilli crabs to long beach.. although if u prefer a less sweet more spicy version than e curry one at no signboard is good... fresh crabs n great sauce make a great dish!
Mee Goreng ($12) - e mee goreng at Jumbo again tend to b on e sweeter side... it's nice but i tot e one at Eng Seng's one rocks! but it's still one of e best ard! tons of tau gay though...
Sharks fin ($30) - we got e 50% for sharks fin so for $15/bowl i tink it's a good deal... e soup is flavourful n is not "corn-starchy".. generous with e fins although would prefer it to cook longer coz it's a bit hard. For $30 might gona think twice since e portion's not that big.
Overall i tink e food at Jumbo is good.. unlike some places where e crabs good but other dishes sux (eg mellben)... Jumbo's food across e board maintains a certain standard n is value for e $$$ so great place for great seafood!
** on a return visit we had e $388 set dinner for 10 pax n i gotta say tat e 1st dish.. e 4 items appetizers has this interesting thai style ikan billis like dish tat's pretty zesty! not a big fan of set meals coz i alwaz tot tat e standard would fail but since most of e dishes we wanted r on e set so cheaper option! **

abalone
Apr 7, 2007abalone slices never tasted worse. the waitress recommended the abalone slices in a weet sour sauce. it was. indeed. sweet and sour. and the abalone was drowned in that horrible tasting sauce. *think lousy brand type of thai chilli sauce. sigh. the mee goreng was too oily. but the rest of the food was ok. as with any other branches of jumbo. i liked the yam rings with scallops. it's bite sized and doesnt look as intimidating as normal yam ring dishes at other chinese restaurants that require some sort of strength to portion out the yam ring.Must Tries

Closing end October
Oct 11, 2009Had dinner with my family at Jumbo Serangoon Gardens to "commemorate" its 20 odd years of business in the area, just before its swan song at the end of October. Apparently the rent has at the club has shot up by quite a bit so Jumbo has decided to take its business elsewhere.
The interior looks a little dated but boasts a quirky blue ceiling with concealed lights to give an impression of dining under the sky - not that it really worked though but studies have shown that blue is a calming colour, which could have been useful, judging from the crowd that evening.
Kailan with Garlic - You can't really go wrong with fried kailan and garlic so no surprises or disappointments here. Portions are a little small for $12 though.
Chilli Crab - The crab seemed rather small for its purported weight (1kg) and it didn't help that this signature Jumbo dish failed to live up to expectations. The gravy was rather watery and didn't go very well with the oily, insipid mantous that used to be an object of greedy desire (for me at least) some 10 years ago. How quality has deteriorated over the years!
Homemade Beancurd - I liked the generous amount of golden mushroom that buried the homemade beancurd. What I didn't like was the lack of silkiness and savouriness in the beancurd. Sure, it was soft but didn't slither down my throat and came across as bland.
Deep Fried Red Tilapia - Tilapias don't go for much in the markets but we were charged $32 for it - hardly fitting. Inflated prices aside, the fish was nicely deep fried and crisp on the outside, coupled with firm flesh on the inside. I didn't appreciate the tons of bones within though. Overall an averagely decent dish.
Cereal Prawns - The prawns weren't fresh and the flesh tasted a little soft and "powdery". I certainly didn't expect that from an established seafood restaurant like Jumbo. On the upside, the prawns were deshelled, leaving only the head, something which most places don't bother to do. I did like the cereal dressing though - mildy spicy, crunchy and sweet. But then again, it wasn't enough to salvage this dish.
Mee Goreng - One of the staples of Jumbo ever since we started patronising them some 10 odd years ago, the mee goreng was a shadow of its former self. Overly sweet would be most apt in describing it, with the noodles carrying no taste except being sweet. Apparently the sweetness is used to cover the alkaline taste present in the egg noodles, but this is really an overkill.
I don't know about you, but $188 ($138 with a $50 discount) for a sub standard dinner for 6 pax just doesn't cut it for me. Service was decent in a haphazard sort of way. Final words? Good riddance to overpriced and commercialised sub quality food!

Jumbo Restaurant @ Serangoon Gardens Country Club
Feb 22, 2009I've went there for a dinner wif my family members of 13 paxs on 21st Feb 09 (Sat) to celebrate our 10yrs wedding anniversary day & had booked a private rm wif the karaoke system in advance. I've also bought along 1 btl of fruit red wine + 2 champagne of sparkling wine juices along. There wasn't any cocktail charges onto it although one of the mgr tot me that there was charges if we were to bring 3 btls of red wine & abv but sometimes they can "closed" a eye as well.
When we've reached there, i've tot the waiter that they can serve the table. During the meal, there was a very bad comment on the spring onions wif ginger of the frog legs. All of my family members commented that the dish was very salty & how to eat??? After that, i've complained to one of a waiter & he had apologized to me & tot me that they will re-do a new one instead. Besides that, we've ordered a dish of chilli sambal kang kong & it was rather spicy abit although i've tot the mgr in advance to take note. We've aso ordered some chilli crabs but i was tot that it was nt very spicy cos some of my family members don't take too much of spicy food. At least the chilli & pepper crabs are still acceptable. There was another comment on the yam paste which was too sweet as i've knw that their yam paste was very nice previously as i'm the member of Jumbo Restaurant for quite sometimes. One of the mgr was quite good & came in to check wif me if everything was fine & etc but i've just made some bad comments to her but overall, we could said that the food was still acceptable although the spring onions wif ginger on the frog legs was too much salty & the yam paste was abit sweeter. The mgr tot me that they will keep note on it & said that she would like to give us a complimentary of a plate of some mixed fruits to us.
After all these comments, we will still go back to this restaurant to dine again.Must Tries

Seafood, chilli crab
Jan 12, 2009came here wif my dad n a bunch of friends... knew d manager here cos dad's fren's son works as manager in Jumbo but @ other outlets. We were entitled to a 20% discount. There was 5 of us so we ordered roast duck, roasted pig, siew mai, har gau, sunfish skin marinated wif dunno wad sauce(a cold dish),congee, some desserts like yam paste n mango sago pudding. The sunfish cold dish is rather unique... it's texture is like nata de coco but it's slightly smaller n u can swallow it whole. It is cut into cubes n mixed wif chilli, cucumbers n tulip i think. It's quite nice actually. I have no comments for other dishes as they r pretty normal.
The manager there recommended d bacon wrapped wif seafood paste but i din order dat as we were too full after so finishing d whole table of food.
I also tar-pau d sunfish skin home... i jus love dis dish. The svc here is much better den the one @ Dempsey.Must Tries

DIMSUM?
Sep 14, 2008Dimsum;
Custard Bun - I would say it's a must try out of its whole dimsum menu. The bun was soft and the custard was tasty. However, it lies more on the salty end rather than sweet compared to other custard buns elsewhere. Nevertheless, it's quite the right mix without tasting weird at all and it tastes good.
Siew Mai & Har Gao - Decent. The prawns are fresh enough and it just tastes right. Not fanastic, but definitely up to restaurant standards.
Chee Cheong Fun- Average. The skin is soft but the few times I've tried it, it's a litte too salty for my taste.
Pan-fried Carrot Cake - Quite soft and it wasn't too oily or salty like some other places. Taste just nice for me. Not fanastic but still worth a try!
Char Siew Pau - I can't remember much of it but since we didn't order it too many times, it aint' that great.
Chicken Claws - Not worth trying either. The taste.. just wasn't there.
Glutinous Rice - Don't bother trying it. I've tried it twice and it failed twice. It's as bad as the chicken claws.
Side dishes;
Golden Phoenix - Unlike its name and the looks of it, it's not chicken. It's a dish of chicken skin layered on top of a mixture of sotong paste. It tasted quite alright. A little plain but with the given sauce, it was quite alright. For the price of about $16 (can't quite remember), I don't think it's worth it at all. Think $16 for sotong paste and chicken skin?
Superior Fried Rice - I thought it was above average, it wasn't too salty or plain and it was fragrant enough. Quite worth the try.
There's also this other dish that was roasted chicken or something like that and please don't ever try it. It's a complete rip off!
Desserts;
I tried the honeydew sago and my bf had the mango pudding before but it was just.. average. I would save my tummy space for other better desserts out there.
I realized that most people go to jumbo for erm, well, their seafood since they're famous for it.
But in my case, I tried out their dimsum (sorry, dimsum > seafood anytime!) several times and probably one or two of their other dishes from the main menu and while it's not fantastic, it's quite good and worth the price (about $15 per person if you're just going for the dimsum). However, please do not place hopes on their service as the service there was a purely serve-and-go thing.
I do remember that they don't charge the 10% service charge and there's 10% off for Citibank.
*EDIT*
I went back there today and the food was horrible despite the slight increase in prices. I strongly suspect that they've changed their chefs and even the custard bun didn't taste good.
I don't think i'll ever go back there again.

Above Expectations!!!
Apr 9, 2008This was my first time visiting one of the better knowns seafood restuarants under the Jumbo group. Despite having heard many good raves on their food, I was expecting a so-so standard.
As I was a guest, I did not note the names of the dishes that were served. But ALL the dishes served were MMMmmmmmm... delicious and certainly above my expectations!
Dishes like something wrapped with bacon (a cold dish), the steam garoupa fish, roast duck, fried cereal prawn, scallops with asparagus, fried mee and snow pea vegetables.
I can't remember all the dishes but I can remember their taste! Excellent top quality and cooked in a unique style from conventional chinese seafood restuarants.
Seafood is really FRESH and ingredients too. You can taste the freshness and difference with every bite. No joke! Go and try and you will know what I mean!
Only drawback is the location is rather ulu if you do not drive. But still worth the travel =)Must Tries

Jumbo @ Gardens
Mar 2, 2008Took my parents out for another family dinner yesterday night and this time we made our way to Jumbo@Gardens, booked a table in the morning cuz I know that there'll be a crowd in the evening especially during weekends. As expected, when we reach Jumbo the crowd was already there! The waiter usher us to our seats and the start of a sumptuous meal begins,
Menu of the Night;
1.) Sambal Kangkong - For a non-vegetarian like myself, I tried a bit of it and find this dish quite good and it’s not really that spicy at all. For spicy food fanatic like my parents ofcuz they complain that it’s tasteless due to the lack of spice. But hey, I like it anyway...lol
2.) Fried Rice with Seafood - Whoa! All I can say is I finish 1/2 of the whole plate. The scallop and prawns are fresh together with the fried rice which was fragrance and not oily. Yummy! Yummy!
3.) Fried Chicken with Garlic - I can order this dish every time I visit Jumbo and won't get sick of it. Tender fried chicken with skin fried to crisp. And their chicken doesn't seem to have a lot of fats too. Just thin crispy skin above juicy tender chicken meat. Yummy! Yummy!
4.) Steam Soon Hock (HK style) - Tried another type of fish today for a change, the meat of this fish is much more fine than the one I had at Jumbo@Waterfront. The Fish is fresh and the meat is sweet and fine (ofcuz not as fine as cod fish meat). Steam HK style is simply the best way to eat fresh fish. Yummy! Yummy!
(Beware of fine fish bones too.)
5.) Herbal Prawn with Soup - I will order this again the next time, even if I have to pay it myself...lol. Fresh drunk prawns cooked in herbal soup (red dates and dang gui I think), bite off the prawn’s head and you can taste the strong smell of VSOP and also the sweet taste of the prawn. Together with the soup,Wha! Good. Yummy! Yummy!
6.) Chilli Crab with Mini Fried Buns - Need I say more. 1kg+ Sri Lanka Crab. Yummy!
7.) Yam Paste - Personally I prefer this type of yam paste, sweet yam paste topped with sweet corn mixture and gingko nuts. One serving is always not enough. Yummy! Yummy!
Service is quite good considering the huge crowd there, did not have to wait long for food, drinks and waiter/waitress were also attentive. Dinning @ Jumbo during the night is like a market place, those who like quite places will not enjoy the atmosphere due to the noise level. For me, I do enjoy this type of dinning environment once in a while. Good Meal!

Good but not exquisite
Oct 14, 2007Date of visit: 10/13/2007; dinner
Jumbo (Serangoon Gardens) is a family restaurant - it is rowdy and extremely noisy with not much of an ambience to speak of. They try to put in as many tables as they can, which results in difficulties in maneuvering through the tables. This can get rather uncomfortable if you're bigger. But they do serve pretty decent food. Not exquisite, however. Its just like how roadside stall food are good, and how restaurant food are good. Both are yummy, but there is a difference in standard. Jumbo is like that roadside stall food - good, but not for fine dining.
Service is non-existant, they basically just serves you your food and thats that. Good value for money overall, but I don't recommend it if you are unused to rowdy environments with people needing you to shift your seats while dining.I also recommend this place for
