i've tried 7 types of cakes from k ki over 2 visits and the best has to be mont blanc! the best i've eaten ever.

the fromage melon and antoinette is also outstanding.

none of the cakes were bad but some just wasn't that memorable. those under this catergory include tiramisu, emily and onigiri.

Tucked in a ittle corner of Ann Siang Hill near the junction of Club Street is K-ki Sweets (pronounced “Cake-kee”) – a pastry shop which offers very fine and delicate pastries with an exquisite Japanese touch. It is relatively easy to miss due to its secluded location, but once you’ve found this hidden gem, you’d know that there is no place better than this.

Once you step into this very simplistic and spacious café, you would immerse into a serene and laid-back ambience. It somewhat looked like some shops shown in Japan Hour…

K-ki Sweets is owned by a couple – Kenneth and Delphine. But what makes it even more extraordinary is that Kenneth, the pastry chef, is a self-taught baker. K-ki Sweets is definitely a dream come true.

To ensure the freshness of the cakes, cakes are baked every other hour. However, each creation is limited in quantity per day. So if you want to be able to choose from a wide variety, be sure to be there very early!

Unfortunately for us, we went there during a peak hour and there was not much cakes to chose from ): We settled for the Noisette ($8.50). This, petite cake was a relatively nutty creation, which comprises of layers of hazelnut praline cream, rich dark chocolate ganache, fresh cream and an occasional crunchier layer. Overall, it was rather light and was neither too sweet nor rich. However, I would have preferred if there were more crunchier layers so as to allow a contrast in texture against the soft creamy cream. Nevertheless, the nuances within layers came through individually, but also melded perfectly together for a perfect dessert.

Other than food, there is The Little Drom Store (run by the couple’s friends), which shares a common shop space with K-ki Sweets. It sells somewhat old school retro knick-knacks such as handmade bags, old-fashioned polaroids and cameras, and cute little toys which are sure to bring back fond memories of your childhood and a light-hearted feeling. With the freedom to browse around this unique Little Drom Store, and also have a slice or two from K-ki Sweets in a tranquil setting, the experience here is unlike many other patisseries.

K-ki Sweets is definitely more than a pastry shop. It is a space filled with warmth, love, passion, pastries, and art. It is an experience. People, with no particular intention in mind, stroll into the café any time of the day for casual glimpses and gazings at the adorable old school stuff sold at The Little Drom Store, while others may chose to have a seat and enjoy their afternoon tea.  It’s the perfect place to go to spend some quiet quality time on your own or even with a close friend, out of the busy hectic world. Even if it was for a short duration, it is still undisturbed bliss that you can never find anywhere else.

For pictures please visit foodmakespeoplehappy.blogspot.com thanks!

This post is a compilation of cakes the boy and I had at Kki - think we've tried almost all their cakes to date? Haha (:

Most important thing to note about Kki's cakes - their mousse is TO DIE FOR. And almost all of their cakes have mousse I think? Its so mind-blowingly light and has a really great depth of flavour!! We love love LOVE their mousse!! I'm talking about this first so I do not need to gush about the wonderful mousse for each cake haha (:

    Kinabaru

    Coconut mousse with passionfruit centre

This is really a great blend and mixture of flavours! Tropical cake in a bite! The definite taste of the coconut in the light airy mousse and the sour twang of the passionfruit layer (that's a little more jelly like) and the chocolate dacquoise layer at the bottom! I'd recommend this to anyone actually, for the greatly play on textures + tastes!

    Antoinette

White chocolate mousse with mango centre

This mousse I felt was one of the lightest I've ever eaten! It really kinda feels like you're eating air hahaha and the sweet mango centre that surprises you brings a nice contrast to the light mousse! This cake can definitely be eaten in a few mouthfuls and leave you wanting for more! But please, leave your stomach for the other mouth-watering cakes on sale! (Unless of course you arrive late and this is the only piece left which I highly doubt based on the popularity of this!)

    Little Red Riding Hood

Dark chocolate mousse with raspberry centre

Chocolate lovers rejoice! Look at this wonderfully crafted piece of art! The chocolate used is definitely of top quality - Valrhona, very smooth, dark, rich. The raspberry centre breaks the monotony of eating dark chocolate mousse and provides a good juxtaposition against the bitterness of the chocolate. Chocolate and raspberries are a match in heaven I'd say! The gleaming exterior of this little piece of cake just screams "Buy me! Eat me!"

    Fromage Mousse

Cheese mousse with rock melon centre

This is one of my favourites actually! I loved the light mousse (whats new? Haha) that sat atop this wonder buttery crisp sable base with the sweet melon centre that brought the whole cake to a whole new level!! I love the different textures here, the extremely light mousse, crunchy and fragrant sable base and the jelly-like centre with the sweet rock melon!! Eating this just makes me feel so relaxed and even though my brain tells me "eat it! Quickly!! Its so yummy!!" The heart tells me - savour it slowly, enjoy each and every bite that's so full of taste. I really loved how they constructed this!

    Tiramisu

Mascarpone cheese with kahlua soaked sponge centre

Now their rendition of tiramisu is easily the best I've ever had in Singapore. Even better than Italian restaurants you ask? You bet! Try it for yourself if you dont believe me. Wonderful alcohol:coffee ratio, the mascarpone, again as with all their mousse, is whipped till its so light and airy! A must for a good tiramisu, I feel! Also the sponge fingers are definitely soaked just right and arent too soggy! Hence it can hold itself up in such a small dainty piece! This was polished off quickly by both the boy and I and we both agreed that this was the best tiramisu we've ever eaten (and I eat tiramisu from almost every Italian restaurant I've been to!)

    Noisette

Hazelnut Dacquoise Layer with chocolate and praline cream

This is a very light dessert (I think I need synonyms for light to describe K ki's cakes! Haha) and isnt as cloying or rich as other hazelnut chocolate cakes in Singapore. I feel the hazelnut taste + chocolate taste can be stronger though I love the crisp texture of the first layer! Those who do not like rich and dense chocolate cakes, preferring more subtle tastes, this cake is for you!

    Emily

Champagne mousse with wild strawberry centre

Another one of my favourites! Love the champagne mousse!!!! Dont worry, its not bitter and the champagne taste will definitely tease your tastebuds! I think its wonderful that they paired it with strawberry! The striking red hue just makes this dessert all the more s*** and heart-tingling! Such a delicate piece of cake that will surely touch your inner heart-strings!

    Mont Blanc

French chestnut paste with fresh cream centre

MMmmmmmmMM, the mont blanc!!! The chestnut cream was TO DIE FOR I tell you! So smooth it was like eating thick and pure chestnut puree. The boy was amazed by how fine the paste was! Take my hat off to Kenneth (the talented man who makes these cakes) for the cream, really. The whipped cream inside doesnt overpower the chestnut paste and goes wonderfully well as a whole together with the base and the chestnut paste! This isnt overly sweet, do not worry! As with all their cakes actually (:

    Onigiri (new)

Basil milk chocolate with bitter orange

I must proclaim, I love herbs in desserts!!! The basil really sang to me in this one! One bite and I knew this contained a savory touch and checking their facebook page confirmed this! I really liked the mousse with the basil! Wonderful addition I feel! The bitter orange centre isnt for everyone really. Tastes like kumquat? The boy didnt like it (he doesnt like orange with chocolate) so I ate it! Think it goes well as a whole with the mousse! So this cake isnt for everyone, especially if you dont like bitter stuff and/or orange in your chocolate!

Mixed sables - green tea, coconut, chocolate

I LOVE their sables!! So crisp and buttery! Love how they're individually packaged as well! Great strong flavours and the small crunchy morsel is really addictive!!

All in all, K Ki is a wonderful place for you to spend the afternoon eating pieces of art that are delicately created and put together, with much effort and thought. The couple who runs the place (Kenneth and Delphine) are really friendly and cheerful! They'll recommend the order in which you eat the cakes so that the taste of one doesnt overpower the other! The first time the boy and I went, we wanted to try all that they had on offer but Kenneth suggested us to try 4 first else it'll be a little too much and we agreed haha.

K Ki is top on my list for mousse cakes in Singapore. With their supremely light and airy mousse, so dreamy and teasing, I wonder which patisserie in Singapore can be on par or surpass them. It'd be difficult I'd say. I know I can definitely count on K Ki to provide me with quality, well thought out and aesthetically pleasing cakes! (: My to-go for good pastry and tart base is definitely Flor! (which is just nearby hehe)

Please visit them if you have yet to! They share a shop space with a little drom store that sells wonderful knick knacks and many old polaroid cameras! Oh and do note that their cakes sell out really quickly and the cafe has limited space - about 5/6 tables inside and 2 outside (dont worry, its not hot outside! Their fan's quite powerful haha) They also have teas and coffees to go along with your cakes but dont worry if you do not order tea/coffee cos they'll bring you a glass of water!

I'd definitely be going back again and again to try their new creations + those that I have yet to try! Eg pumpkin pudding, strawberry shortcake and cafe dumo!

Was looking for The Patissier. Can you imagine a gay man lost at a gay territory? Please revoke my Gay License. Thanks. So I stumbled upon K Ki and remembering that my online BFF, The Endangered Sartorialist, blogging about it, I entered. The shop space houses two shops: a cake shop on one side, very Japanese, very white with wooden birch chairs enough for 10 patrons at most. The only side is a hoarder’s paradise, stacked with paraphernalia of nostalgic things: polaroid cameras, sharpeners and magazines. Who will buy? Can earn money meh?

I whispered to Mr NGFL (because the shop was so quiet, no music), “Do you think thedecor is very pretentious?”

He said, “But you’re pretentious what.”

“True lah…but I try not to be, I try to be down-to-earth.”

Mr NGFL had the Kinabaru (pictured above, $8), alternate layers of coconut and passionfruit mousse, giving it a zesty, refreshing and light taste. “Exactly what I wanted,” Mr NGFL sighed in contentment.

The Antoinette ($8) is the shape of my emo tear. Sob sob. I didn’t expect to finish the cake and in fact, I was resisting the cake because I’m a grumpy old man who delights in giving bad reviews to places that people praise highly. But there are no other words to describe the cake except “sublime” and “ethereal.” The white chocolate mousse was as light as air; it was like I was eating gossamer. I expected intense, excessive sweetness, yet it wasn’t. It was a subtle sweetness, a sweetness that comes as an aftertaste. And surprise! at the heart of the teardrop hides a sweet heart of mango mousse. At the top are some ginger bits. Mango, white chocolate and ginger make such strange bedfellows yet they compliment each other perfectly; the milkiness of the white chocolate; the tanginess of the mango, and the sharp spiciness of the ginger – perfection. This has to be the best cake I’ve ever eaten in Singapore. I want to return to eat all their 8 or 10 types of cakes.

    The Service:

Mr NGFL: I think the baker’s cute.

Wise Guy: He’s wearing a mask! You can’t even see his face! Wait, don’t distract me. I am thinking of the questions to ask him. I’m sure the cakes are made of fresh cream because they are so light [most bakeries use cream cheese because it lasts longer]. I will ask him that [yes, the cakes are made of fresh cream].. and what other questions?

Mr NGFL: Ask for his “shoe size”?

So yes, that is our extent of review on service these days: cute or not. But when I asked the baker questions, he was very helpful and cheerful. I said to the waiter, “Oh my friend has a question to ask you..” and Mr NGFL blushed like the sunset!!!

Overall, BEST CAKES EVER. Cute service. Only slightly pretentious place. Our only complaint is that the cakes are so small and costly. No GST, but there is service tax, coming up to $18 for two cakes. But I think it’s more worth it than at Antoinette.

I don't understand the positive reviews about this place.

    -The coffee is bad.

    -The cakes are terrible.

    -The prices are beyond ridiculous.

-The outside seats are non smoking.

-There is 1 table outside with room for 10.

-The service isn't bad because there is NO service.

    - They don't bother cleaning in front of their shop. There's a pile of junk on the right side.

Even the little novelty shop is seriously overpriced!

I don't get it. What a waste of potential with such a great location.

k ki is cited slightly off from the intersection of ann siang hill/club st/ann siang rd and is super inviting, with bright glass windows showcasing a clean, minimalistic, Scandinavian aesthetic within.

k ki's ambience is one of quiet, whimsical respite. people troop into the store for casual glances at the cute stuff sold at the little drom store, whilst others stay longer for some afternoon coffee and cakes. its the sort of place to go to to be reacquainted with yourself, spend some time just gazing through the window and musing about life, or get a close friend to escape and while the lazy afternoon away. it's really undisturbed bliss, albeit for a short duration. let's get to the cakes.

my sis got the noisette ($8), layers of hazelnut fillings with an occasional crunchier layer. its very light, not too sweet or rich, perfect for people who desire non-jelak desserts that can actually be finished by one person in a sitting. the nuances within the layers individually came through but also melded perfectly together for a delicious dessert.

i got the antoinette ($8), a white chocolate cake with a mango creme center and topped with some ginger bits. honestly, one of the best cakes i have tasted in a long time. its equally light, as with most japanese interpretation of western pastries. the white chocolate cake is like a semi-hard mousse sort of cake that melts in your mouth upon tasting and gives you the light, sweet white chocolate flavor. the mango creme, situated in the center of the cake, forms the PERFECT counterpart to the white chocolate, bringing a secondary, differently-nuanced sweetness to the palette. it reminded me of a typicaly hk-dim sum custard bun, but much lighter, more nuanced and more well balanced. i fully recommend this for sweet-toothers.

overall, the perfect cafe for a lazy afternoon catch up session with a close friend. dun miss this.

The Little Dröm Store offers more than just vintage knick-knacks. Browsers are occasionally treated to a tantalizing aroma wafting from the oven, courtesy of K Ki, a patisserie sharing the same shop space.

After two visits, we managed to try four delightful creations, although we popped by a lot more times to find an empty display counter.

kinabaru ($8) - coconut mousse with passionfruit centre

The coconut mousse asserted itself with its strong presence yet surprisingly light in texture. Its fragrance artfully balanced the tanginess of the passionfruit cream while the chocolate dacquoise was moist and soft.

antoinette ($8) - white chocolate mousse with mango centre

Very rich white chocolate mousse enveloping light fluffy sponge with a sweet mango puree centre. Topped with pistachio and crystallized ginger, its teardrop shape was aesthetically pleasing as well.

emily ($9) - champagne mousse with wild strawberry centre

There wasn't any bitterness, unlike some alcohol-infused desserts, and its bright hue was particularly striking. The marriage between champagne and strawberry was simply made in heaven.

onigiri ($9) - basil milk chocolate with bitter orange

This newest creation was also the most interesting. The light chocolate mousse was accented with basil while the bitter orange provided just a nudge, in the form of a creamy centre and a fruity preserve crowning the cake.

We enjoyed the Japanese-style pastries, which were typically delicate yet luscious, with unique flavors that left an indelible impression. However, with an additional 10% service charge slapped onto the not-so-cheap price tags, these tiny cakes were meant to be savored very very s_l_o_w_l_y!

    Note: Cash and Nets only.

Visit my blog at petitconnoisseur.blogspot.com for pictures and more reviews!

One of my favorites at K Ki is their buttery and perfectly crisp sables ($12 for 14). I love the intensely flavored matcha version, which is given a savory touch by the addition of sesame seeds. The fragrant coconut sables are equally fabulous, and the chocolate hazelnut version is delicious as well. It's a good thing that these sables are individually packed, otherwise it'd be all too easy to finish the whole bag in one sitting!

Noisette ($8) was a nutty creation comprising rich dark chocolate ganache, fresh cream and hazelnut praline cream sandwiched between layers of hazelnut dacquoise. Though the chocolate and hazelnut elements were brought out nicely, the entremet was marred by the overly stiff dacquoise.

Fromage Melon ($8.50) features a light and dreamy fromage blanc mousse with a sweet and juicy melon core, sitting on a sable breton base that packs a buttery crunch. Nice, but I still like Kinabaru better..someone I know will beg to differ though!
