A Buffet that combines Quality with Quantity

We have not been to this famed restaurant for years and decided to spend a public holiday lunch here over the buffet lunch which is only available on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays.
Of course we remember the beautiful setting of the restaurants inside a Japanese garden, with waterfall and a koi pond. The place was relatively quiet on our visit with about 6 - 7 tables occupied. There was traditional Japanese music played in the background.
The buffet came with 2 complimentary items ( 1 serving only)
1. A plate of sashimi (3 kinds, 2 pieces each) for each patron. We had salmon, yellow tail and a clam, all of superior quality.
2. A half boiled baby lobster coated with some sauce for each patron. The lobster was reasobaly fresh and sweet, but the sauce was so so.
The menu consists of cold items, grilled items, deep fried items, teppanyaki items, sushi, handrolls, rice/noodle, fruits/desserts. About 4 to 6 items each section and they are free flow.
We selected the following:
1. Vinegared eel, which was light and refreshing. A great appetite stimulant.
2. Tai salad, with a refreshing dressing with sesame seeds accompanying some paper thin raw snapper slices which were very fresh.
3. Grilled teriyaki cod which literally melted in our mouth, making it mandatory for a repeat order.
4. Prawn tempura with fresh big prawns coated in feather light batter.
5. Deep fried soft shelled crab which came accompanied by a chilli sauce, but was tasty enough on its own.
6. Scallop with prawn miso was simply heavenly.
7. Teppanyaki beef cubes were juicy, soft and succulent.
8. Ebi Shioyaki (prawn grilled in salt) were fresh big prawns grilled in plain salt, simple and tasty.
9. Simmered seasonal vegetable included snow peas, yam, mushroom, bamboo shoot, carrots and pumpkin. Each was tender and delicious, except the snow pea which was just slightly undercooked.
10. Grilled shitake mushrooms in salt which was average.
11. Grilled egg plant with miso came with such modest look, concealing the rich flavour once we popped it into our mouth. The only thing we could say was oishi desu.
12. Yakitori took a long time to appear at our table was the wait was worth it. The chicken was fresh, tasty, tender and done just right.
13. The common teriyaki chicken was uncommonly outstanding. The chicken was sweet, fresh and tender and the sauce was not overly sweet.
14. We had some sushi. The hotate (scallops) were fresh and sweet, the unagi was still warm and it literally melted in our mouths. The rice was nice and was not too much, which is vital at a buffet meal.
We were not able to sample more items because we repeated our orders in a number of items. We were then full enough to go on to the desserts.
The fruit platters included papaya, water melon and winter melon. All were sweet.
The ice cream selection was outstandingly good. There were coffee, rum & raisin, vanilla and lime sherbert. It was tough choice, so we sampled all except the vanilla. The lime sherbert was refreshing. After that I was almost ready to eat again.
The coffee and rum & raisin rivalled the best we have ever had. Creamily yummy, they were. The rum & raisin was especially good, with the taste of the rum making the overall effect less cloyingly sweet.
Throughout the meal, green tea was free flow and not charged a cent on top of the price they charged for buffet.
Service staff was polite and efficient. Serving sizes were small so we got to order many times. Despite that they were always courteous and each item would arrive hot at our table. Perhaps it was not a very busy day, but the standard of service was certainly worthy of this famed 5 star hotel.
The buffet was $58++ per person. Not cheap among Japanese buffets in Singapore. But the food quality and the exemplary service was worth every cent we spent. Especially so when there were some set lunches on offer that day, with some of the same items featured in the buffet billed at $56++ per set!!

Must Tries: Vinegared eel, Beef Teppanyaki, scallop with miso, prawn tempura, grilled teriyaki cod, grilled teriyaki chicken, unagi sushi, ice cream

Impeccable in every sense

This is the place to go for Teppanyaki. Was there recently and every dish we had was fantastic. Especially the lobsters - hte meat was succulent and was extremely tasty.

aside from the food ,we had impeccable service. The moment our tea dipped below half, someone would fill it up. Not once did we have to ask for more tea. Also, all the waitresses were extremely polite.

It was rather pricey but definitely a place worth going to.

Nice ambience but pricey~

Went there with a girlfriend for dinner coz we decided we want to try a new place.

We were not really hungry so opted for 2 starters and a udon to share: the cubed tuna with miso dressing, crabstick and chicken salad, and their "Special" udon. The cubed tuna was good, although I took a while to get used to the strong miso taste. Salad was really just so-so. The udon was quite tasty in a light broth and some simple vegs; their udon is more flat (a little like La Mian), unlike the thick fat ones we are more used to.

Portions can be bigger for the prices. The bill came up to $60 even after we had a $10 discount.

Many people were seated at the teppanyaki counter though, including many Japanese itself, so I assume the food is quite good. Was also surprised that it was almost half filled despite it being a Tues evening. Service was efficient and friendly, although they did break a tea cup while serving us.

Probably will not be going there again anytime soon, but its a choice to consider for a special occassion.

Authentic Japanese food

This is a restaurant which draws on all your senses. You walk through an idyllic Japanese rooftop garden listening to a stream running over cobbled stones. There are beautiful Koi swimming in the stream. Your eyes are drawn to a traditional Japanese style house and are greeted by a waitress who is wearing a Kimono.

You have a variety of seating options to select from, including the bustling main dining hall, teppanyaki, robotayaki (barbecue counter) and sushi and sashimi counters, as well as traditional tatami rooms for more privacy. We were spoilt for choice with the variety of Japanese cuisine available including kaiseki, teppanyaki, shabu shabu, robotayaki, sushi and sashimi.

As we hadn't booked we had no choice but to sit in the Robotayaki room where you can see chefs preparing food directly in front of you. I think we were lucky as I think this is the best place to sit. We were mesmerised by the chefs preparing the food just a few feet from you. The aromas of grilled prawns and meat immediately make your mouth salivate. The taste of everything was exquisite. The robotayaki and the tempura prawns were divine. The sushi was good. The baby lobster starter was nice.

The only complaint was the service. The food just took such a long time to come. The waitress had taken our order and forgot to give it to the chefs. What a muppet! There was no apology either. Food again come in dribs and drabs. This irritates me so much about dining out in Singapore - this really needs to be addressed. At one point we waited for 30mins to get another course. Eventually the poor chef who was working in front of me saw that we were starving and gave us some more freshly fried tempura and grilled prawns. The taste of the food made us smile temporarily before we had to wait ages for the next thing to arrive. The whole meal took 2 hours in total.

The secret here is that they do a cracking Buffet on saturdays for around $60+++ (which is quite pricy) but you can order anything off the menu for this price. You need to book before you go.

authentic good quality but pricey food

been coming to keyaki for birthday meals these couple of years.
1st time we had at the robatayaki bar. we didnt make a reservation prior and the service was crap - non-existent staff, wrong orders, wrong bills - although the food was good.
2nd time we made a reservation and were seated at the teppanyaki section next to the area where they placed their orders / cups/ plates etc when there was SO many empty tables around. i really wondered why. didnt like the fact the service staff were always hoovering near our table since we were right next to where they needed their cups/plates etc. so we asked for a table change.
the food was delicious. we had robatayaki set for 2 again. consisted of some seafood (prawns, squid) beef slices rolled around spring onions (wonderful and succulent), potatos and bacon strips etc. we tried the udon last time, pricey and just normal tasting, nothing great. i wouldnt pay $19+++ for udon like that again. the teppanyaki set was nice, although we ordered only 1 set, it was enough for 2, garlic fried rice, tender beef fillet grilled to perfection, moist & juicy, lobster grilled to release all the sweet sea taste, gorgeous. the set also came with 1 chawanmushi and also lime sorbet at the end. we were so stuffed we totally forgot about dessert!
definitely a place to go for fine dining.
but be prepared to fork out a whole lot of dough. i would save this place for special ocassions only.
ambience is nice - the outside really looks like you are transmitted into japan. the staff are also dressed in kimonos. there's private tatami rooms too if you wish.
----
got some photos of the buffet lunch, upload for all to see. buffet was delicious, especially liked the teppanyaki beef and teriyaki codfish. alot to eat. quality food. not cheap either though - total bil $300 for 4 people, inclusive tax etc.once in a while, pamper yourself and family - why not? try it!
