| Just nice
We (a group of five) was wondering where to have lunch. Decided to try this restaurant since 1 person in our group said not bad. Anyway, it wasn't such a bad experience...in terms of food...and of course my company of colleagues. =)
We ordered:
- Hainanese Chap Chay ($9)
=> It came small. It's really small. We had expected something like in a claypot. The first look, doesn't seem appetitizing but surprisingly it wasn't that bad.
- Saut Diced Chickent w/Dry pep ($10)
=> This dish was not too bad. Wasn't that "hot" (chilli).
- Sambal Kang Kong ($8)
=> Normal
- Sliced Fish fry with ginger ($12)
=> We took medium. The fish isn't that fresh and this dish is so-so...can do better
- Braised Bean Curd in Claypot ($10)
=> It came in a claypot with some slices of fish, prawn, mushroom. The bean curd was smooth and fresh. One of my fav dish.
- Yam Paste ($13)
=> Just enough for 5 persons. It was well done. Smooth. Wasn't too sweet and just sufficient (around the those $2 pkt kind that you find in hawker centre).
Other charges
- Peanuts $2
- Chinese tea $5
- Napkins $1.5
- Rice $3.2
Total: $73.70
Not much of an ambience but service was also not too bad. At least they were attentive to serve you the tea...and there isn't any GST or service charge!
I think the beef noodle suppose to be good. So I guess we will try this next time! |

| The dissenting review
I have never thought of trying a place like this, in the middle of a "privatized" HUDC estate. When looking for this place don't be afraid just turn into the estate carpark and tell the guard you want to go to the restaurant. Parking is $1 for all day but really there is no where else to go after your meal so you don't need "whole day".
The place seems to be converted from a defunct western bar/pub or something in that line. Remnants of the old renovations still found in obvious spots. Tables are dinky but they cover it with table cloth and to prevent table cloth from getting dirty (and need to change) they cover the table cloth with the plastic sheets that you typically see wrapped on a "sonka" (funeral) table... yeah that white sheet... Can't say I am too enamored with this ambience. They have a "wedding" package too...just hope they don't wrap your $278 to $498 per table with the same plastic sheets...digress I did.
Ok So ambience is crap so what right? These old school places are all about food right? Ordered:
Fish Maw Soup (super highly recommended as a very good dish) $20 for a small order that will fill 3 larger than average rice bowl. This is not exactly soup, more like a starchy concoction of fish maw and assorted ingredients. Fisrt impression is - "nothing special" granted they give you a lot of fish maw. Finished the whole lot and still felt lacking in some ways perhaps too much starch and too little stock resulting in it lacking flavors. That being said, it is pretty decent value considering how much stuff they dump in it.
"Flambe" Pork Ribs (also a chef recommendation) $13 came wrapped in an aluminum foil, the pork wasn't throughly marinated such that some pieces have more flavor than others but overall meat falls off easily but not especially juicy or succulent... Again, I find this dish/sauce lacking in flavors as well, which would be fine if the pork itself is flavorful but it is not to be. Portions are good as well for $13.
Braised Beancurd Claypot $10 - needed some tofu. Ordinary dish typically of any tze char.
Sambal Potato Leave (another recommended dish) $8 - ok it is sweet potato leaves...what was I thinking...decent but normal i guess.
Peanuts $2 nice portion I say...value for money!
Chinese Tea $1 per person
Napkins $0.30 per piece cannot eat but not good value for money... I remembered it should be like $0.20 at some more upscale chinese place.
Rice $0.80 per bowl...ok lor typical...cannot complain about rice...=P
Service no charge so can't expect anything more than them taking your orders and serving it to you. One thing though...few tables on week nights can dine in peace. |

| Comfort Food
When Kim Moh first opened at Laguna Park at the turn of 1999/2000 I was skeptical at how long it would last - I had seen eateries come and go in that space.
Evidently the establishment which spent decades building a following on beef noodles had a loyal customer base and managed to convert them into other food categories. The place is packed with families every weekend night, and is a favourite location within easy reach for Sunday dinner with my own folks.
Our orders are the same but we're still not bored - spicy sweet and tart Assam curry fish head, rich and green sambal sweet potato leaves, thick herbal mutton soup and 1 other whatever else strikes our fancy.
All dumped onto steaming white rice, Kim Moh's comfort food offerings never fail to recharge me a little for Monday morning, and make me doze off contentedly while watching Sunday-night CSI on the couch. |
