Hokkien Mee From the 60s...

Kim’s Hokkien Mee has been around for many many years according to my dad. I’ve been to their old outlet at Sim’s and Beach Rd (no longer there anymore) and AMK (which I stopped going and don’t know if it still there).

An accident and jam on the PIE triggered me to exit at Eunos to look for dinner with my dad. It’s either Seng Kee’s Mee Sua or Kim’s Hokkien Mee. Dad chose the latter (as he’s a sucker for all prawn mee).

We ordered the Famous Hokkien Fried Prawn Mee ($5) and me being greedy plus in the abalone mood, I also ordered a Claypot Abalone Hokkien Mee ($15).

It’s strange how I didn’t have my camera with me that day, as I always have it in my bag whenever I go. So please pardon the lousy shots from my lousy camera phone.

I was standing near the frying corner snapping pictures of the boss frying the mee, the aroma killed me and I was so hungry. Hokkien Fried Prawn Mee came topped with generous serving of crispy fried lard and seafood (prawns and sotongs) I like the wet version of HFPM but the one here TODAY seems to be more on the mushy side, it was a no-no for me. The chilli tasted bit raw like there’s no enough seasoning(IMO). Next up was the Claypot Abalone Hokkien Mee, topped with 5 slices of abalone, a nicely done egg yoke (which I don’t eat), a bunch of chives (with my daddy hates) and seafood (prawns and sotongs). This come with slight gravy with was savory with a hint of abalone broth? The abalone has a nice texture, not rubbery. The sotongs on the other hand was like chewing gums. Prawn doesn’t seem to be fresh enough but still ok. The serving size was huge and what we ordered can be shared between 3 people.

I guess the standard has dropped over the years, well this usually happened to most eateries. Unless we’re talking about those super high-class one…although sometimes we also encounter the dropped of standards at some high-class place, maybe chef s were having mood swings. Guess for HKPM, I will just stick to my usual hunt at the Golden Mile Market.

*** Parking can be a problem, but don't worry, can park on the double yellow line just beside the coffee shop. Shhh...

The Famous Prawn Noodle (Hokkien Mee)

This is the place to go for the famous Hokkien Mee. If you pass by the Eunos Road, you can see Kim's famous giant size photograph. Kim in white long sleeves shirt cooking his famous Hokkien Mee. Of course nowadays, you won't see the 'Man' doing the cooking and slogging it out in the kitchen.

The must try, of course the Hokkien Mee. Cooked with the prawn stock and pork fat stock, you can feel the flavor with every bite of the noodles. Its wet and served on top of dried banana leaf. Mixed it with their Chili and Yumm yumm, now I want to go and have some. (8.9 / 10)

You can also try the Fish Maw soup. It’s thick and solid. Quite good actually. The Oyster Omelette also got kick on the sauce; the same apply to their Kang Kong Belacan. I give it 7 out of 10

The difference between the shop and the Joo Chiat branch is that they keep the food here simple and friendly for the pocket. The Joo Chiat will try to push for the expensive stuff like the crab and prawns.

The service is so so. Ambience, it’s a rundown coffee shop. No aircon and can be hot as hell. To be fair, just come here for the food and don't expect too much of the rest. Good value for money though.

PS. Just illegal park along the lane beside the shop, cause u got no other place to park ha...ha....
