This is the stupidest restaurant ever. Go to Black Angus instead.
Apr 19, 2008I'm Ben's wife, prompted by my extreme irritation with this ridiculous establishment to write a review.
I had not been to Lawry's for years and had forgotten how stupid I found it, I really regret my short memory as I have wasted nearly 200 bucks and an hour of my life on a recent lunch time.
Now, I am on a no-carb diet so a prime rib place seems well, a prime choice for a carnivourous type like me.
First up, I find the attempt at a posh silver service style restaurant completely bizzaire when you consider that the menu is not only utterly restricted (it reminds me of school dinners, although in fairness there is more choice than there was when it opened). most posh restuarants will bend over backwards to please. Anyway, daft waitress uniforms and strangely short menu aside, i did not think it was much of a stretch to ask for some broccoli instead of mash potato. My morose server's response to that request was "no".
You are however obliged to have that "famous spinning salad". Ok, I will grant you, it is very tasty but why oh why do they insist on faffing about tossing it at your table. It is the most pointless exercise - they could do it in the kitchen. IT IS JUST A SALAD!
Anyway, meat wagon arrived after I had eaten my stupid salad. I forgot to use my "chilled fork". Oh man, maybe that is why I didn't find the whole thing a moving experience.
Meat wagon - I admit I baulked at paying silly money for my roast beef so I had chosen the smallest cut - but my goodness it was the stingyest little piece of meat ever. I went to Black Angus and my daughter had the kids prime rib there (for less than 1/3 of the price) and she had twice as much meat! The meat was extremely tasty yes, but no better than the aforementioned Black Angus and really rather fatty. I was then asked if I wanted any "a la carte veggies" (read, do you want to pay more for your veggie). "Um Yes" I said, I asked for some broccoli when I ordered at the start. Oh. Silence. A blob of gelatinous mash that even my one year old wouldn't eat was dished up and I waited, and waited and still no damn brocolli (you will be thinking I have a bit of a thing about this, but I was going to be super hungry if all I had was my puny piece of meat). Eventually the slightly less morose waitress returned to check that I really did actually want the blooming veg and then after another long wait it did arrive. In fairness, it was beautifully cooked, but then you would hope so for $8.50!
There is no doubt that the food is of excellent quality and well cooked it just doesn't make up for it's shortcomings. Many many restaurants in Singapore provide equally good meat without the ridiculous restrictive menu, rubbish service, and astronomical prices. I am not afraid to spend a lot of money on a meal out - but I do object to paying lawry prices when there is absolutely no value for money. Perhaps they could start tossing their salads in the kitchen, ditch those stupid chilled forks, and knocking a couple of bucks of the price. The restaurant is COMPLETELY PRETENTIOUS - it is not fine dining, it is school dinner with posh cutlery. Go down the road to Black Angus, your waitress won't be wearing a ridiculous little hat and hideous brown uniform, but the food is just as good, you'll get twice as much, and probably pay half the price!! I looked around the other diners thinking "what mugs we all are for thinking that high prices means high quality, and posh tablecloths means posh service. We've been fooled by the hype". Never ever again.
A POSTSCRIPT:-
I have since been discussing this (and some other users annoyance at my review) with my (high spending, don't worry) friend who will also never visit Lawry's again. They also think that the salad is ridiculous and had an experience that shows once again that it is NOT fine dining. They sent their meat back as there was a huge glob of fat in the middle (yes it happens, some people like that, some don't. Point is in a good restaurant, if you are not happy-you should be able to send it back).
Anyway, this meat was taken away - and RETURNED with the fat cut out! Same meat, same veg, not even clean plate. I have worked in restaurants, and even in non fine dining places, if a customer sends food back, you get them a replacement. You do not give them back their meat with a hole in the middle!!
You want fine dining, go to a proper restaurant. Hungrygowhere can point you in the right direction.Must Tries
You MUST try the damn salad, you've got very little choice in the matter. And you WILL be given mash potato. Like it or not.

Super overrated place! Go to Morton or Just steak instead!
Aug 29, 2007Came here on a Sat evening with mom, dad, sis and wife. Celebrating someone bday. Anyway, the place has shrunk. Prob due to their not so hot food and rental increase.
We sat down and immediately knew it was a mistake compared to going Mortons. Price was like Mortons about $60-80 per main dish. Ambience is boring. I hate it when ang moh bring their mid-tier concepts and charge an arm and leg for it in Singapore. read GAP, Banana Republic, Guess, etc etc.
1) Yorkshire pudding. Tastes like flattened french toast. Crap.
2) Rosemary Steak. Not bad but for $55, i would say expected.
3) Lawry's rib... we ordered 2 diamond cuts to share.
a) They did not even have the decency to split it properly for us. Made us have to share the salad!! Can you beat that? And don't even get me started on that gimmicky spinning bowl thing.
b) Rib to be fair was good. But i think i have eaten better at normal rib places in the states.
c) Kept asking us to order wine but we were so unhappy with the service and the way they divided portions for salad, that i did not want to given them any more business.
4) Service. Bunch of untrained wait staff dressed in some colonial hangover dress.
Cost was S$380 for 5. Continue like that i think they will shrink out of paragon. Sheesh. I hate wasting time and money like that. -
If you love steaks, nice cosy ambience and spinning bowls...this place is for you !
Oct 12, 2007I have been to this restaurant every now and then since their inception some time back. Used to be a much bigger restaurant, but guess due to the ever increasing rent at Orchard Rd....Lawry's must be a victim of downsizing ! They've downsized the place afew yrs back....but have they downsized their food quality and service standard ?
Was there recently for a meal alone....yea right....that's the problem with doing last minute late night shopping at Paragon....and I was craving for a nice steak...so popped by Lawry's for a quick bite...or so I thought !
Orderd their English cut which is afew pcs of thinly sliced beef....dish came with spinning bowl salad which is like a trademark of Lawry's worldwide ! Ok...the salad is not too bad to begin with. The steak was just the way I wanted....not bloodied of coz...and the sauce though a tad salty...but blends well especially with the creamy spinach.
I also ordered their lobster tail which is good, but a tad pricey...but it is quite fresh and I'm quite happy with it. That's not all...I also ordered their Idalho baked potato....now those on a suicide mission...you must ask for lot's of sour cream, bacon and chives....if you are a potato lover...you'll know this potato rocks ! Oh yes and the potato is not small either...so I guess it's quite a good deal for your $$$.
Anything Lawry's can improve on ? Yes....if their prices are a tad more competitive...I'm sure they'll have much more market share than what they have toiday. On several occasions, I overheard many are quite turned off by their "atas" pricing....and quite a fair bit of bystanders at the entrance didn't even bother to try at least once, for fear of burning a hole in the wallet. But I'm sure Lawry's in SGP has got it's hands tied due to their parent company's policy.... which is Lawry's USA to have uniform pricing worldwide. Then again, I don't mind splurging here once in a while.....but if I were to dine here more often, guess I'll need a windfall...and a strong heart !
So is it worth trying here at least once ? Of coz....give yourself a break...you only live once, and you deserve the very best : )I also recommend this place for

Gross
Aug 25, 2009Unfortunately when i went, the place was undergoing renovations and we were seated opposite the toilet which was extremely unsightly.
Having been to Morton's a few weeks before coming to Lawry's i must say i was sorely disappoint with the steak. It was - horrible, in comparison, and not worth the price.
If you want steak, skip Lawry's and go straight to Mortons. Dont waste your time and money here.Spent about

An Afternoon Indulgence Indeed!
Jul 15, 200912 JUL 2009
Whilst waiting for Wifey, I strolled around Paragon to find myself looking at an eye catching brochure... "Afternoon Indulgence... Only at Lawry's"!!
Basically, served daily between 2.30 pm to 5.00 pm, a choice of 1 Savory and 1 Sweet cost $12.00 per person!! That also includes a choice of Italian Coffee, Assorted Tea, Soft drinks or Juices!! For the full Afternoon Indulgence menu, click here... "Whoa" was my initial thought and with that, I found our afternoon tea destination for the day! Lawry's, here we come!!
Lawry's is quite the classy restaurant... Dimly lit, with smoothing music in the background, it simply exuberate great ambience... Staffs were professional, patient and polite... After a brief discussion, we decided on what we wanted to order 2 Savories and 2 sweets... As the menu looked enticing enough, I enquired about the third item and was informed that each extra item will cost an extra $6.00... Very nicely priced, considering where we were and I ordered an extra Savory!
First up, the Sautéed Cream of Mushroom with Garlic Bread... AHHH!! The fresh fragrant crispy Garlic Bread was perfect with the thick, tasty creamy sauce of the sautéed mushroom... Thinly sliced mushrooms coated with the creamy sauce were deeply infused with the buttery taste... Its simply heavenly!!
The Prime Rib Yorkshire Roll up... Hmmm... diced pork rib, thinly sliced bell pepper presented wrapped in a crêpe like egg-roll was serve with a dark dipping sauce... though quite decent, was nowhere compared to the Cream of Mushroom or the Bruschetta.
The Bruschetta topped with Roasted Chicken with Tomato Salsa Sauce was the winner of the three savories... Crunchy bruschetta with rather nicely roasted chicken covered by a layer of melted cheese reminded me of the chicken and salmon fingers we so sorely missed from Miss Marples in Melbourne... Together with the Tomato Salsa Sauce, it screamed "EAT ME NOW"!! I can definitely munch on this all day long!
The tables were quickly cleared and re-set after the completion of our savories and soon the sweets arrived... Now... the Homemade Scones with Devonshire Cream was presented as three mini scones... Freshly made, the scones were rather unique... strawberry flavored scones... Eaten with the sweet strawberry sauce and a dollop of Devonshire Cream, it was back to sweet creamy heaven again... Really wished the scones were much bigger though!
For the second order of Sweets, we had the Sweet of the day which was a simple Blackberries topped Cheesecake with Raspberry sauce plus a scoop of Chocolate Ice Cream... The ice cream was all right, but show-stealer here was the cheesecake creation... and together with the berries and sauce, it was really a great combination! Simply Awesome!!
For $12.00++ per person, I think this wonderful Afternoon Indulgence is absolutely of great value... Together with the extra order of Savory ($6.00), 10% Service Charge and 7% GST, the bill added up to $35.35... Alas we don't frequently come down to Paragon, else we'd definitely be hanging around for the very affordable Afternoon Indulgence at Lawry's!

oldies goodies
Jul 6, 2009it is a nice place to do a business lunch for some worthy accounts; ambience is nice and service is good.
We ordered a cali cut and a rib set. Together with 02 bottles of sparkling water, we summed up a bill of approx. $120.00. (30% discount during the GSS) Oh, our set includes the visual pleasing spinning bowl salad and the good old mashed potato and the yummy Yorkshire Pudding.
Must say this is one of the best places to have your beef if you are a roast beef person. Too bad my partner is more of a fan of the grilled version…The meat is soft and tender and juicy and sweet...ai ya, very good lah. Some like the meat to be carved right in front of your table but as a heartlander, I find this delivery too wayang and Victorian. You might have guessed it by now; my lunch partner was not Elisabeth.
The different cuts are basically referring diff thickness…and perhaps the potential damage to your budget.
Must say the meat deserves an A and no less. Actually, to me it deserves to be a straight A outlet for all the items that we had. Beef, pudding, salad and mashed potato.
However, the ostentatious ambience did not make me 100% comfortable. It kind of makes a humble soul feel almost guilty in ‘stealing’ a seat in this elitist restaurant.
For me, I’d visit this place only when I am resolute enough to have my pte definition of ‘Prime’ beef.Must Tries

The Place for Roast Beef
Apr 13, 2009We went to Lawry's last Sat to celerate my baby girl’s birthday. She love the cream corn there, it is a must to have 2 portions for her. I don’t eat beef but my husband was totally in love with their roast beef. My baby was very happy & was smiling all the way when they sing happy birthday song to her while bringing out her birthday cake. We spend about $200 for the 3 of us, not cheap at all, but we enjoy it very much.Must Tries

Don't think I will want to go again...
Apr 8, 2009Having just tried Yonezawa beef in Japan, I thought of trying something equivalent in Singapore. Since there is a 25% discount off main course at Lawry's The Prime Ribs using SQ boarding pass privileges, my friend and I decided to have dinner there.
Food-wise, it's quite alright, but the worst surprise came when we were enjoying the main course. It felt really lousy when a little cockroach crawled across the table in the midst of dinner in such a restaurant as Lawry's the Prime Ribs. I felt even more lousy when I was presented a 1-1 main course voucher as I settled the bill (Mind you, I still had to pay for the main course. Tea and coffee were on the house only when I said that I wanted to cancel my coffee/tea).
I do not think that the manager did a good job in handling this incident, though I should had insisted on a change of table and even, to stop the meal when the incident happened. Both my friend and I were caught off-guard that such an incident can happen in such a restaurant as Lawry's. Just our luck...?
I do not think I will want to use the voucher and I do not think I will want to offer the voucher or recommend this restaurant to friends in the near future.Spent about

Not my cup of 'Steak'
Mar 12, 2009Well, from my title, it should've explained bit of what I thought about our dining experience in Lawry's..
Service was good, friendly and courteous but they made mistake of serving 1 wrong order, of course, it was immediately changed.
What I really appreciated was they advised you which ongoing card promotion that gave for discount upon presenting the bill.
I ordered Californian Cut which was definitely for ladies, it was alright and really not my cup of steak, the salad was average but I think it's quite interesting to see they way their serving it, never saw it anywhere else...
My regret was, ordering the side veggie, such as green peas, which cost around $8 additional and I didn't like it at all...
Didn't try the red wines, ended up with still water...
The letdown was their bathroom which was not properly working and maintained, also the 2-seater table wasn't really comfortable in term of space to your neighbourI also recommend this place for

Main course was great - but the experience was worth less than what we paid
Dec 19, 2008My gf and I had dinner at Lawry's two days ago. We were apprehensive after reading all the reviews on this website, so we had REALLY low expectations and were preparing for the worst. This is how our experience went:
When we called for table reservations one day ahead, we were told rather brusquely that tables are only held for 15 mins and we have to call them if we can't make it. Well, I feel that customers do so out of courtesy, and restaurants shouldn't be demanding on this point. Other top restaurants CALL their customers the day of the meal to confirm their reservation, and that's real service for you. Rem who is paying the bill and the customer here! So management got a thumbs down here... poor training for the person on the phone.
We arrived on time and were escorted quickly to our table. The decor was nice and cozy, as it was Xmas time. The waitresses weren't wearing tacky uniforms too (maybe cos it was Xmas). So the worries on tackiness were unfounded. If you're there during a normal time in the year, maybe you might have an experience that resonates with some of the other reviewers. Anyway, we were brought to an inner dining room, and thankfully they thought to dim the lights nicely after we sat there for 10 mins in bright white light...
When we ordered, I felt that the service was still lacking. Rather than go through the menu with us, the waitress assumed we knew it and simply asked us "Two prime rib dinners?" rather than "How can I help you folks this evening?" A well trained waitress should take pains to introduce the menu to customers, not assume we are repeat customers, and does not make assumptions about customers' preferences, though he/she can make recommendations if asked. I felt it was strange that a place like Lawry's did not seem to have their service training down. Anyway, we ordered a steak dinner and a Lawry's Cut prime rib dinner, along with two glasses of wine.
The spinning salad routine was alright - less tacky than I expected. The salad needed pepper to taste good and was pretty normal/forgettable. The chicken soup was average, and below expectations. Funnily enough, while we were still having our soup, one of the waiters came dashing in to bring us the steak dinner. This was surprising because a good restaurant never rushes its customers - I felt like I had to finish my soup quickly. Anyway, my gf insisted they hold the steak in the kitchen till we were ready for our mains.
Our mains arrived, and the food was very good. They do prime rib very well - it was a great cut; and the steak met my elevated expectations of the food at Lawry's. The size of the portion was very good, about 12-13 oz. We were very full from the dinner. All said, I have absolutely no complaints about the quality of the food, which I would rate as excellent. Yorkshire pudding - that was also great, since it's hard to find that in Spore nowadays! The wine (private label Cab Sav from Lawry's - $14++ a glass) went very well with the steak.
In summary, the quality of the mains was excellent, although the other stuff (soup, salad, mashed potatoes) was simply average and not worth remembering. What I am concerned with is the service, which affected our experience slightly. If you're going there just for the food, then the mediocre service probably won't affect you. But a dinner, as my gf points out, is a dining experience, so when everything is taken into context, we also expected an outstanding level of service at such a reputable restaurant like Lawry's. On this front they disappointed. Also, I don't think the price we paid was worth the quality of the meal. For a bit more of what we paid, we could have gone to a 3 star Michelin restaurant like Les Amis and had a fabulous dinner experience. I speculate that the steep prices are a result of price controls by their US offices on worldwide franchises, to prevent brand dilution by different markets.
In all, I would try it once only if it's a 1-1 main course deal, which is why we were willing to try it out anyway despite the poor reviews on this site. They will give you $50 vouchers if you spend above $150 for a future visit. I'm not keen on coming back, because I've had steaks in the US where I lived and this whole experience was just kind of over-rated. The service is superb in the US, because you pay a tip, which at 15-20% is slightly more than the 10% service charge you are forced to fork out in Spore (and prob goes to the restaurant and not the staff anyway).
In all, if you're willing to fork out $80-$120 per person for a 7/10 dining experience where the only thing worth remembering is the steak or prime rib dinner, you can give this place a shot. Personally, for the quality of the meal and experience I would have valued it at $50 per person (inclusive of all taxes and ++).
Rem that for the same $80-$120 you are willing to pay, per person, you've got plenty of options where your dining experience is higher than 7/10. For e.g. try Morton's for their variety and their meat cuts is just as fabulous. Or even Les Amis and the restaurants in those categories.Must Tries

The English Cut - Aces
Jul 26, 2008It came as a surprise that the English cut stands out against the lawry cut. Both cuts are good, just that it renders different texture. The english cut is thinly sliced hence the fat and meat ratio is almost 1:1. It is so tender and melts in your mouth texture is unforgettable.
Spinning salad looks gimmicky, but a little crispy veggie helps balance the otherwise too carnivorous meal.
The only letdown of the night was the accompanying side - Yorkshire pudding. Unfortunately it leaves a slightly burnt aftertaste :(
Good english ambience for bringing your dates or for some quiet dining.I also recommend this place for
