Nice Ter Kar but BKT only OK
Aug 6, 2007This shop serves the Klang style herbal BKT, not the peppery Teochew style of BKT. Did BKT start in Klang or Singapore? The jury is still out on this one.
FOOD
2 of us ordered:
- 2 servings of BKT. The meat was very nice, tender without being too soft, and generous (about 7-8 pieces per $4.60 serving). Problem is that the soup was not just herbal, it was a bit bitter and did not have the robustness a good BKT should have. 6/10
- 1 serving of Braised Pork Leg. This was really nice. Firstly no bones, secondly lots of muscle with not too much fat. Tasted quite good too. 9/10.
This plus the rice and 2 bowls of you tiau cost $16.
AMBIENCE
Coffee shop but if you sit on the walkway, it is quite pleasant as Beach Road has trees and the road is 4 metres away. As good as coffee shops get.
SERVICE
No complaints (for a coffeeshop).
OVERALL
Yes worth trying but perhaps the BKT needs more garlic and robustness.Must Tries
Braised ter ka

Go for it if you love strong herbal tastes
Mar 5, 2008
As you may know, I like the fried fish bee hoon over at Beach Road and like to walk there for the soupy lunch. As usual, there was a long queue. Not usual was my decision to find something else to eat. So I backtracked a bit and came to Leong Kee. It seems quite popular, why not give it a try since there are seats?
The order took longer than expected. I must have waited about 15 to 20 mins for my claypot of Bak Kut Teh and rice combo. But when I came, I was pleasantly surprised.
The soup was boiling in the heat insulating claypot when it was presented by before me. So it scores on presentation. The consistency of the soup was almost like a gravy, liken to say, sharks’ fin soup and it had a strong herbal taste. Particularly, it had the bitterness from the tang gui used. Unfortunately, that was about all the herbs I could taste. It was something enjoyable, though on the heavy side for a soup.
I liked the addition of the tau kee or fu pi which gave the dish an extra dimension. The vegetable added was also a nice touch. The meat served here seems to be always spare ribs, which is tender to the bite. I liked that it was cooked to the extent where the meat comes off the bone easily.
On another occasion, I tried the pig’s trotter. I liked the smoky taste which came from the high heat treatment just before it is served. The texture of the meat was tender and the skin, tendon and fat are something that should be tried at least once no matter how health conscious one may be.
Price-wise, I thought it was quite reasonable as they gave generous servings. A small claypot of bak kut teh or pig’s trotters goes for $4.60, rice for 30 cents, youtiao for 50 cents.

Very strong but unpredictable herbal notes
Jan 26, 2008This Klang style bak kut teh can be a nice change from the clear and peppery Teochew style which seem to dominate the island.
I've eaten twice here. The herbal notes are strong in the bak kut teh but they do vary from day to day. Click below to see review and photos.
First experience: bak kut teh that was a little too bitter; fantastic braised pork trotters (ter ka) that was lean yet tender and flavourful
Second experience: surprisingly the bak kut teh tasted better than the pork trotters this time!
So it's a bit of a gamble but no matter what, it's still good value for money (S$4.30 for a bubbling hot claypot of meat!)
Service here is fairly fast and friendly. Oh the premium dark soy sauce is really nice and thick here. I got to take home some of it on my white shirt too. lolMust Tries

Satisfy your cravings
Dec 1, 2009We all have our own bad hair days, at times where you have to deal with unreasonable people when you rather be sitting down in front of your computer to read at food blogs. At times where you are working your ass off, and it seems work will never end. You know what I mean, and that is why we always look forward to lunch.
My choice of a dining place usually depends on the-craving-of-the-moment, and for this occasion, my dining companion was yearning for some Bak ku teh (bkt), and she brought me to one of her favourite place. I’m a self-proclaimed pig-lover; from roast pork, bacons, to bak kwa; there’s nothing that I don’t like about pork. I know many people refuse to take pig intestines; they are not exactly healthy but they sure are tasty.
The presence of the distinct herbal taste was characteristic of the bkt here. My dining companion had the pork ribs ($5 per bowl) while I had the combination bowl of pork ribs and a mix of pork offals like the intestines, liver, and stomach. I have a love-hate relationship with pork ribs. On one hand I always complain that the ribs are not meaty enough, but I like to gnaw on the bones to finish every bite of the meat, and suck the sweetness of the bones. And the pork liver was cooked nicely, retaining a tinge of pink.
Long story short, if you like my review please do come by ladyironchef . . . for the delicious in you -
Hmm.. not too bad .
Oct 28, 2009This review was supposed to be done last night. That was when I went for bak kut teh dinner with my other half. We tried two places, here and Sin Heng Bak Kut Teh at Joo Chiat Rd, on the same night.
We came to this restaurant first. Free parking (night at Arab Street. Ordered bak kut teh, preserved vege, and yu tiao.
The bak kut teh : black soup, which was what I was looking for. Reminds me of the bak kut teh I used to have in KL, M'sia. It is slightly murky, not the clear soup that I like. Smells fantastic, though. There were a lot of ingredients, pig stomach, intestine, meat.. Value for money. I do like my soup with a strong herbal taste and this soup, to me, isnt strong enough. But it's still pretty good. Apparently it smells stronger than it tastes.
The chilli and garlic were kept in plastic containers. They look a lot better than the other restaurant that I went to, Sin Heng.
Service here is fast and for a place like this, the wait staff can even crack a smile or two.
Preserved veg- like any other.
Yu Tiao - totally not crispy.
I wonder if this outlet is a branch from Leong Kee at Geylang. I think I much prefer the bak kut teh at Geylang branch, although the surroundings of this restaurant is better.I also recommend this place for

SO-SO only!
May 8, 2009To be honest, the BKT is nothing much to fuss about.
I'm not comparing the authenticity with actual Klang BKTs, because there simply is no basis for comparison. I think it's fair that we just look at it on its own, the taste of the soup, texture of the meat etc.
A classic case of too much of a good thing becomes bad can be tasted in the soup. My taste buds were telling me that the proportion of the different herbal ingredients is not right, making the soup taste funny and overpowering. A few prominent food bloggers have commented that the soup tends to be inconsistent, and one even advised that patrons should go during the earlier part of the day. Apparently the owner said that the soup is at its best during that period, but towards the evening it might become a little overpowering. So proceed at your own discretion.
The pork ribs, on the other hand, tasted much better. It's not mind-blowing or exceedingly delicious, but it definitely makes up for the less-than-satisfactory soup. The folks at Leong Kee are pretty generous with the servings as well. So at about 6 dollars per person, it's really quite a good deal.
My galfriend wanted some variety, so she took the herbal chicken which was, in her own words "not too bad, but not exactly fantastic either".
Both girls ended up well-fed that night, but far from achieving any sort of culinary euphoria. The BKT felt more like a novelty in a land filled with peppery ones.Must Tries

Not too Bad...
Apr 17, 2009went to this place after reading reviews here, we went on a sun evening,(7pm) surprisingly, not much people, ample place to sit.
we ordered 2 pot bak kut, 1 pot ter kar, 1 yew tiao and 1 salted veggie.
bak kut was soft but not too soft just nice, soup (to me) is too thick, herbal taste is too heavy for me, taste last for hours after eating it. ter kar potion was too little, gravy not very tastful, yew tiao ok and salted veggie ok also.
But need to point out is, even it is a coffee shop, service was GOOD, coffee boy very polite, auntie very kind, offer us 1 empty bowl and spoon for my gal, without me asking.
Overall good experience....Worth going. will be back even i find the soup is too heavy for me but my wife and gal enjoy it and nice place for a coffee shop setting.I also recommend this place for

herbal bak kut teh..
Apr 13, 2009Had been hearing so much about this stall and also passed by countless times whenever I was in the vicinity. I just had to try it and so I finally made my maiden visit. :)
For variety, we (2 pax) ordered 1 serving of bak kut teh and 1 serving of kidney and liver (mix). Both were served bubbling hot in claypots and smelt pretty fragrant too.
The soup had a faint note of herbs and was on the herby sweet side. Not strong on flavours so its not really for ppl who prefer strong tastes. I don't find the herbal notes very strong, maybe 'cos I am too accustomed to regular good and strong herbal soups at home. But the innards and bak kut were yummy! The liver especially was timed just nice in terms of cooking so that when served/eaten, it was still not overcooked. The bak kut was tender and peeled away from the bone easily enough. One other part I liked about the bak kut was sufficient fats in the meats. :)I also recommend this place for

This Is What I Call Bak Kut Teh...
Mar 31, 2009I like this Klang Bak Kut Teh alot...
Eversince I tried the first one at Malacca, I'm wondering if I will ever find it in Singapore.
The first Klang Bak Kut Teh I came across is the same one but the outlet at Geylang, they leave a deep impression on me.
Unlike the local common bak kut teh with the strong peppery taste, this is more herbal, more like the idea of bak kut teh to me. The local one? Pepper Soup with Pork Rib ba...
Thumps up! Try them for yourself...Must Tries

Food is ok~
Nov 9, 2008Perhaps it's just not to my taste..
But the BKT was just ok~ for me.
If it's the herbal taste that is the emphasis..
I wish it was stronger..
It doesn't have the garlic flavour Singapore's BKT have too
so.. i'ld actually prefer that =X
But to be fair, although i didn't like the soup too much,
but the ribs were soft and tender. so that's the plus point!
To me, i actually prefered the teh kar~
There wasn't bones so that's good!
it's soft, rich, tender like how teh kars should be :)
sauce was not bad, but could be richer too i suppose...
Not much of an ambience if you ask me ya..
it's. coffee shop.
we were sweating as we were eating.. so...
ya.
again, not a bad choice if you were around the area too!
we could smell it from a distance away so.. Yup. i'll still recommend it if you were there, but maybe we wouldn't specially travel like 1 or 1 plus hour for it again =DMust Tries

Best Herbal Bak Kut Teh in SG
Jul 30, 2008Boyfriend is a fan of BKT (short for Bak Kut Teh). I personally prefer it in herbal stock than those peppery kind. I like mee sua in BKT and boyfriend always have the usual BKT with rice. Tried the braised trotters and the herbal chicken too. Not too bad but the limelight still goes to the BKT. I also personally like the fresh chopped garlic, it helps to kill all the bacteria in the food. Boyfriend always order the "cai buay" (salty vege) too.
This stall serves up the best BKT in SG by far and it never failed to satisfy the palate.I also recommend this place for
