A new chill out place perhaps
Oct 13, 2007The place had 2 other customers when we arrived here at around 845pm on a Fri night. The lack of patronage was surprising as I thought this place would be somewhat crowded. Nevertheless, we decided to stay for a while to get a sense of the place and its drinks.
As we just had dinner, we didnt order the bar snacks, though, I must say the listing moves away from the standard snack lists you have at other places. But then again, you would expect that from Majestic. There was an item on the menu - XO sauce squid ink spaghetti... Now that is something i would definitely go back and try.
There were some interesting cocktails on their list, and my girlfriends and I tried their:
Kyuri - a Japanese cucumber based drink (i cannot rem the base!) with a stick of blueberry
Tennesse Rush - rum, cranberry juice and orange napolean (goodness know what that is)
Gingerbread man - vodka, ginger wine + another mixer i cannot rem
Kampong Freeze - rum, advocaat, contrineau, thai honey orange juice
kiwi mojito - just add kiwi to the stardard mojito
lie cheat steal - lychee juice & mint leaves (non alcoholic)
All of the above were interesting in their taste, and the tennesse rush and kiwi mojito had the most kick, whereby the alcohol could be tasted but not in an overpowering manner.
The kyuri was a bit diluted for my liking, though the taste of blended Jap cucumber was quite yummy.
Now what came as a surprise was the Kampong Freeze. It looked more like a mini chendol freeze, with the colouring and even the gula malaka taste. I could not taste the rum nor contrineau at all, and overall I felt that this drink was a bit of a disappointment.
The non alcoholic drink was a bit too minty for my liking, and my gf commented it tasted like sugar cane. oh well.
With the exception of the non alcoholic drink, all the above was priced at $15 (incl tax & service)
The bar itself was interesting, based on the theme of a tree (?!). The ground floor had wooden panels sticking out of its walls, with metal sculptures of insects randomly placed on them. This floor represented the roots and the trunk of the tree. The second floor, was obviously the leaves of the trees, represented by green collage of green crepe paper I think! (It just reminded me of the art classes i used to take in primary school!). The 3rd floor was the 'sky' with a blue ceiling lit with tiny yellow bulbs, to represent the stars. This floor was the only floor still undergoing renovation.
All in all, the concept and drinks are interesting. But to me, a bar needs to have more than an interesting deco, the drinks and the the ambience need to be there for you to just chill and get relatively buzzed from well concocted drinks.
Oh, by the time we left, the ground floor was filled to its max seating capacity, of 20. So, people do drop by much later in the night.I also recommend this place for

Original drinks, great finger food
Dec 20, 2007It was a girls' night out and we decided to try out Majestic Bar under the recommendation of T. ( "It's very NNNNIIICCCEE!")
The bar is not to be confused with the Majestic Restaurant, which is a chinese restaurant situated next door although the finger food is derived from its main restaurant.
Parking is a squeeze - the limited URA coupon parking mandates early patronage to 'chope' a parking lot, and please tear your coupons conscientiously as they conduct regular checks...
I think reservations are recommended as the place is a little small and might be booked up for some private function (as was the night we went) so you do want to give them a ring and check it out.
Drinks list includes their original martinis, with interesting concoctions like ' Gingerbread man martini, and something wasabi-based, BLEH.
They have a list of 'Long' drinks which I'm not sure what it is, but from my guess, probably derivatives of 'Long Islang Iced Tea'. Adventurous drinks list but a little hit-and-miss.' Your drink (The Thai Iced tea) tastes like cough mixture!', announced T, who had a fruity Strawberry Caphrinoska(???) and who approved of her Chocolate martini, "Mmmmm, it's very nnniiiccce!" ( See picture)
Check out the whiskey list.
Finger food - a list of about 20 thereabouts - mostly done chinese restaurant style. We started off with the whitebait - it was done very nicely, light batter fried to a crisp, and the salt/garlic/onion was a real hit. The crispy oysters were done the same way, and came with a palette of interesting sauces - sesame, soy, wasabi mayo, sweet chilli, green chutney amongst those that I could identify. The oyster was sweet, large and juicy. We also had the assorted tempura which was okay. The squid-ink spaghetti was fried chinese style with some onions and garlic and wasn't too bad, nice change from italian style but a tad too oily. The grilled gindara was sweet and fragrant, but they could have been more generous with the serving. The wasabi prawn was tasty, but no vast detraction from regular Chinese restaurants. Oh but the aircon was blasting away, so you have to eat quickly before your food freezes over.
Altogether, we thought the finger food was quite tasty and a refreshing change from the usual Western styled stuff you get at bars. It was so tasty that we ate most of it before remembering to photograph them for HGW readers. Acknowledgements to F for arranging the half-eaten food for photography and to T for her valuable remarks and the hand holding the martini glass.Must Tries

Surprise!
Aug 12, 2008We ordered coffee to start and then cocktails. Coffee was decent. Cocktails were great! Unique flavours which tasted yummie.
On a Saturday night, I reserved 2 seats indoor. It's a nice & cosy bar. Comfy cushy seats. But tend to get a lil' noisy if there's a big group around... which was partly why we decided to call it a night after one round of cocktails.
There are a couple of seats outdoors. But it tend to get humid.

feels like wild life in the bar!
Jan 6, 2009We decided to sit on level 2 of the tiny, elongated bar. There are oiutdoor seatings also but it is a bit dusty from the road and rather humid.
Miss Piggy is impressed by the specialty cocktails that the bar concocted and i did the GingerBread Man Martini. It has vodka and some ginger flavour plus ale in it. Overall smooth and yummilious! Costs SGD$16++ per glass.
Finger food can try the Deep fried white bait fish. It satisfies the "nibbles" cravings perfectly!
The second floor has a smallish outdoor patio for "fresh" air personnels and the indoor is decorated by figurines of "preserved" birds in cages and even a monkey on green foilages! Feels rather junglish to MP! *LOL*I also recommend this place for

New Oriental Style Relaxation
Jun 3, 2008F/B: Has got their own concoctions. Both international and Asian styles. Try it. Ask for recommendations.
Ambience: I'm quite sure the management spent quite a fair bit on the interiors. Well, they've succeed. Situated near Chinatown, it's no wonder the owners gave it an Oriental yet classy settings.
Value: Price for drinks are pretty reasonable. About the same as other bars.
Service: Service is fairly good, but I will have to deduct points for them employing too much China staffs. I had problems speaking to them in English. It's ok to employ China staffs, but at least have a balanced staffs that can speak bilingually. This is afterall, Singapore. I know of many that can't speak proper Mandarin.I also recommend this place for

Cosy, tucked away corner of old-world Singapore with a modern twist
Mar 17, 2008The bar is eclectically furnished, check out the walls with the metals spiders which look like they've been recycled from old clockwork, and also the retro ceiling. The first floor is great for casual lounging. The second and third floors are private spaces which can be used for private functions. The second floor has a cool little al fresco space to chill out, and the third floor is a room with a balcony that looks out on the quiet street lined with quaint shophouses which are just typical of Chinatown.
The drinks are well-made, and staff who are attentive and keen to learn about new mixes.Must Tries
