| Hidden spot~~
You'll probably never find this place unless you ask specifically for it. The 2 entrances to the bar are tucked right at extreme corners of Mezza9, and perhaps explains why it is a bit empty even though they have martinis at $10+++ from 5-8pm.
Gunner ($10) - Wasn't feeling very martinish, so ordered this, one of their speciality cocktail, which basically is ginger ale + ginger beer, plus a dash of something I can't remember but the drink turned out pink. Not too bad, although I had expected the taste of ginger to be stronger.
Lemongrass Martini ($10) - I still think lemongrass and martini is a weird combo for me, and the bartender was apparently very generous with the alcohol that day, wayyyy to generous. I took a sip and decided that was all I could take. The only thing that reminded me it was a lemongrass concoction was the stick of lemongrass in the glass.
Black pepper nuts (FOC!) - their complimentary bar nuts, highly addictive, so please be warned. I have to agree, munching on 2 bowls of it spoilt my appetite for dinner too. They sell it in packets from the deli but I can't remember how much for.
This place is also absolutely freezing. Don't know why those beer-clutching burly ang mohs don't seem to be disturbed by the sub-zero temperatures, but then again, maybe its us. One of the staff noticed our faces turning blue and very kindly brought out 2 shawls for us. Top marks for being attentive~~
Just go, for nuts. |

| Sailors and seamen don't mix
Ignoring the title... this corner of Mezza9 is not easy to find without knowing it exist in the first place. Kind of like your soulmate actually.
The bottomline is that they serve $10++ martinis (and "muddlers") and free, but infrequent, tapas from 5pm - 8pm.
Ambience gets top marks here. The seats are comfortable and widely spaced. Might actually be a bad choice after a hard day's work, since you might fall asleep before the drink is finished. The lighting is dark but not pretentiously 'bat-cave', just sufficiently subdued to obscure minor facial flaws; character flaws notwithstanding.
I hesitate to comment on the crowd because it probably changes everyday. I assume this to be the case, since there were a group of fancy-dress-party sailors doing their best salty impression of inebriated louts, and I don't expect them to be a regular feature.
The $10++ drinks range from Lychee Peach Muddlers (lychee and peach fruits pounded into submission and doused with alcohol), nescafe martini, lemongrass martini and so on. The drinks were not particularly strong but that's to be expected from fruity cocktails.
Lastly, the nuts that came with the drinks were delicious. I mean, lick-the-bowl scrumptious. Imagine, fragrant cashews coated with savoury crispy black pepper. Heaven. My wife and I had so much of the nuts, it actually ruined our appetite for dinner. |
