hmm...ok...lah...
Feb 3, 2008Just got back from a evening with old friends filled with great makan and double desserts!(Mental note: Got to go for intensive running and cycling this week!!!)
Max Brenner was our final stop for the evening. I was looking forward to it ,as for some reason or another, I have missed opportunities to makan here since it opened 4yrs ago???
This was a "hard" review as I was soooooo distracted by one of the sweet looking waitress...ooooh...oops! getting distracted again! Anyway after the initial ga-ga, finally got down to taste the strawberry white choc smoothie ( it was a test of my commitment to food reviewing! hahahaha...).
Hmmm...initial taste was good (partly due to waitress serving me.8D), the fresh strawberry flavour and white choc came through moderately and texture was slightly rough (due to fresh strawberry). It was nice, but just not my kind of strawberry milkshake, I like mine thick, smooth and strawberry icecream like.
Well, what was I thinking of???( hehehe...probably NOT!)having strawberry milkshake in a chocolate cafe! Wake up pea brain! hahaha... my friends had the toffee choc milkshake and the suckao thingy...and they like it.
Looks like I have to go back there to do a proper review of their choc products soon! (hahahaha...)Spent about

A night revolving around a hand phone pouch
Jun 8, 2008This is my first visit to Max Brenner. Have always wanted to drop by but never got the opportunity.
Pretty glad that there were ample seats when we arrived.
Although the shop sells chocolate, it did not smell like one. Quite thankful for that. Didnt want to walk out smelling like a piece of chocolate.
The whole shop was dimly lighted. Pretty comfortable. Certainly a good place to hang out with a couple of friends and indulge in some aphrodisiac food.
We ordered a Belgian Waffle ($10), Brownie ($6), Fondue ($30 for Large) and a chocolate drink ($8.90).
I thought the waffle was pretty decent. The texture was alright. It was of a right amount of thickness. The chocolate sauce poured over the waffle was however a little weak. Not thick enough. The ice cream was quite nice. Don't know which brand is it. I particularly like the berry sauce. The berries were big, sweet and juicy. It was served on a separate saucer, which is good. You won't want your waffle to be soggy when its served. Very thoughtful of the shop.
Ordered a brownie because BF likes brownie. I didnt really like the brownie. Thought that it was a tad to hard and dry. The only redeeming factor was that there is a generous amount of chocolate sauce over the brownie.
How can one not order their fondue when they are over at Max Brenner? LOL. We ordered the large one since there were four of us. The fondue came with three chocolate servings. You can choose from white chocolate, milk chocolate and dark chocolate. You can choose to have a variety or all of the same flavor. Undecided, we decide to go for a variety.
The fondue came with a plate of strawberries, bananas, marshmallow and banana cake. Nothing to comment on the sides. I thought the chocolate was not thick enough. Was a bit disappointed.
No idea whats the name of this drink. Shall just name it chocolate drink. LOL. Took the first sip and felt that the drink was very light. It was however icy and refreshing. Leo tried to convince me that the drink is nice. So, towards the end, he told me to take another sip as things are more concentrated now. Nah, it was still light in my opinion.
Although dessert was not mind blowing, I will still come back as its a good place to chill out with friends.Spent about

An unfulfilled chocolate dream
Feb 21, 2008Max Brenner (the Bald Man) wants to change the world with chocolate. My world (or dream chocolate experience) did not change because the much talked-about chocolate soufflé was not available!
“It’s not available at the moment,” said the lady who took our order.
I glanced not once, but four times at the menu (which was almost falling apart), which had a row of little Max Brenner stickers pasted across the words 'chocolate soufflé'. Seemed more like it was already unavailable for a period of time!
Dreamy pictures surrounding the bar celebrate chocolate. A display cabinet stacked with drinking chocolate powder, block chocolate, chocolate chips, pralines and all the Max Brenner drinking paraphernalia scream out at you. However, there is no soufflé.
We settled for a chocolate fondue. Offered with a choice of two types of chocolate to dip (milk, dark, or white), it was served with a platter of banana bread, marshmallows, a (single) sliced banana, and some strawberries (SGD$20).
Service was inattentive (despite there only being TWO people in the chocolate bar).
Momentary sugar rush? Check
Enjoyed it to the Max? No.
Happy? Hell, no.
My chocolate dream was unfulfilled. I just might need some sort of therapy to get my head of out the chocolate fog the Bald Man was talking about.Must Tries

Overly rated & not worth the price
Oct 11, 2009For the Couple Fondue ($20), you have a choice of milk and dark chocolate. We decided to get two dark chocolate as we love the intense bitterness of dark chocolates. Still remembered the phrase we saw in Interlaken, "A dark chocolate a day keeps the doctor away~" How true?! When it arrived, we were shocked at the size of the fondue. It looked more like chocolate dip than fondue, with miserable serving of dark chocolate. The chocolate was served in a small pot, with another pot of steaming water sandwiched between the chocolate and the tiny candle. However, it failed to warm the chocolate enough to give it an extra o0ompH factor even though we do acknowledge that placing the chocolate directly over the flame may burn the precious chocolate. The chocolate was rich, but it was not bitter and warm enough to impress us. We wouldn't classify this as dark chocolate at all.
Fondue set comes with fresh fruits and banana bread (pretty tasteless). The "petty chocolate dip" was not enough for us to dip a whole fruit in it! Frustrated as we were, we still polished the chocolate off, leaving behind many fruits without any dips.
We also ordered Churros $3.50 (bottom right). There were only a few pathetic churros! Churros is a cinnamon sugar coated dough stick with taste like fried youtiao to us topped with cinnamon sugar. (A: Youtiao tasted much better. haha!) It was disastrous.
J's & A's rating: 2.75/5
We appreciate Max's kind intention of sharing the wonderful chocolate. But Max, can we have a bigger portion please? For this fondue (or shall we call it dip instead), we could gladly return to our favourite hang out where there's a even better chocolate dip!

simply love it
Jul 9, 2009the cousins and i were deciding where to head to for dessert.
there was a slight debate that max brenner had closed down! so, risking it, we strode to check it out..
haha.. of cos its not closed down. in fact, the place was so full, we had to wait for a while for an empty table.
one thing is for sure. if you are budget conscious, this is definitely not for your consideration. prices here tend to the extreme high. then again, the quality we get more than makes up for the prices. great for the occasional pampering and indulgence!!
heres what we had...
MARSHMELOW CREPE ($10) - decorated very nicely with strawberries and gummy bears around the peripheral of the plate. served with a scoop of vanilla icecream.
BANANA WAFFLE ($12) - really thick, crisp golden brown waffles. small bananas covered with caramel and chocolate sauce tops the waffles.
BELGIAN WAFFLE ($10) - waffles are the same as that of the banana waffle. this order however comes with a saucer of cherries and a scoop of vanilla icecream.
SOUFFLE ($15) - if you know a chocolate 'bomb', you'll know this. a chocolate fudge cake, the size of a pudding. cut into the cake and chocolate oozes out..... everyone just had to stick their forks into this.
MOCHA - this was served in a really weird container (cup?). i should have taken a picture of it.... just imagine an egg-shaped glass 'bowl'. very chocolatey and rich.
GRANITE (w/ dark, milk or white chocolate) ($8.90) - choose the milk chocolate. our conclusion on the white chocolate is... not so nice.
LIGHT CHOCTAIL ($8.90) - arhhh.. this was fantastic. comes with a scoop of vanilla icecream. think mocha ice blend from coffee club.
BAHIA ($12) - expensive and NOT NICE. some pink thing.. which. tasted like antibiotics (sorry for this comment) to us.
overall, we had a lot of fun and jokes as we had our sweet treats. the lady attending to us was also rather patient.
my shock came when i asked for the bill and saw the whopping figure that we had chocked up :O
still, we'll be back for more chocolate delights!Must Tries

Chocolate
May 21, 2009Stopped over for dessert and was really bowled over
Dark Venezuela chocolate ($5.90) - Thick and very satisfying. Came in a hug mug...so no ears, just hold it with both hands. Understand the logic of deriving warmth and comfort from it, but a bit of a challenge when it was first served...very hot!
Dark Chocolate Suckao ($6.90) - Interesting "aromatherapy lamp-like" dish-bowl with metal straw. It came empty, but with cream and dark chocolate chips on the side so you can mix it as thick / rich as you like. As the tea candle heated the chocolate-cream mixture, it got thicker and more heavenly.
Gold latte ($8.90)- Fruit based, smoothie like drink. Bit on the sour side, but refreshing
Toffee chocolate & Coockieshake ($8.90 each) - Both of which I didn't try, so can't comment...but there were no complaints
Brownie with ice-cream ($9.00) - Hadn't the capacity to try this either
On the whole it is simply choco-heaven with interesting experience...especially with the Suckao. Service was great as well but the joint is a bit of a noisy spot with blenders working in the background and a shop full of people chatting.Must Tries

dessert lovers
May 19, 2009Located at Esplanade Mall, this place is a must-go for chocolate lovers. I am more of a dessert guy, so me and my girlfriend decided to go in and have some delicious dessert.
As the name of the cafe states that it is a chocolate bar, yes, almost everything on the menu had chocolate. We went there on a Saturday night, it was very crowded.
We ordered the Belgian waffle to share. The Belgian waffle took some time to come but i think it is worth the wait. The vanilla ice cream seems home-made and they had something extra: Cherries!

Who knew pizzas could taste like that?
May 6, 2009After a long day of shopping, my friend and I were craving for some comfort food. Despite the fact that I've only less than 2 weeks to get into that dress of mine which was getting too tight, I succumbed to temptation. We asked for the Choc-Banana pizza.
The serving's good for 2-4 people. Toppings were... banana slices, almond and i think it was butter crumbs or sumtin with a tiny scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. It took slightly more than 15 minutes for our pizza to arrive.
It was worth the wait. Every second of it.
Immediately, we poured the warm chocolate sauce all round. The base was awesome- crisp at the sides. Phenomenal. Pretty innovative I'd say!
The service staff were excellent. Extremely friendly and efficient. I got to know the I/C- a very petite, quirky lady who looks about 24 but who's really in her 30s. heh. I guess being around chocolates does a lot of good eh.
will definitely be back for more! Have yet to try the crepes there.

Nice stuff, but be sure to share
Jan 1, 2009I have been to Max Brenner twice. The first time my friends and I sat at a table deep inside the cafe, near the kitchen. The chocolate aroma was overwhelming. I'm not sure if it's the lighting or the chocolaty air, the group of us complained of discomfort and headache after sitting inside for a while. We did, however, remembered that the desserts were good.
So we went back for the second time, on NYE afternoon. This time, we sat at the first table at the door, waaaaay off the kitchen. And it was better this time, as we didn't experience as much discomfort as the first time we were there.
We ordered the Belgian waffles and chocolate soufflé to share. Both desserts were a visual treat. I find the waffle quite all right, a little too crunchy, if you get what I mean. The favourite is still the chocolate soufflé. Soft, fluffy, and not too sweet. Poke it with a fork and you see the chocolaty goodness oozing out. Yummy! Mix it with the vanilla ice-cream and jam, it was nothing short of heavenly.
But be sure to share the dessert, because too much of a good thing can overwhelm the senses. After working halfway through the chocolate souffle, I had to stop as I started to feel jelat.
The service was a little frustrating, probably 'cos there're only 4 of them in the cafe. It was hard to get their attention most of the time, we had to wave our arms about for several times at different people before our orders were taken (it was the same when we ask for the bill). But when you are in a cafe for dessert, I suppose most of the time you ain't in a hurry anyway, so it was still quite all right.Must Tries
