HIGH Tea Indeed

Came here for the Saturday High Tea buffet because we have a $22 Club @ Hyatt voucher. The place was its usual elegant self with the usual courteous service staff to be expected from a 5 star hotel.
Food was generally of decent quality but rather limited in variety.
2 soups were offered. There was a pumpkin soup. I had the Thai chicken soup with hardly any visible chicken and it was rather ordinary.
The California maki (the only Japanese item) was outstandingly good.
2 decent sandwiches were offered, 1 with egg and prawn, the other with smoked salmon.
There were the chilled seafood. Unfortunately I am not much of an oyster eater, because there were fresh ones in free flow. There were also mussles, clams and prawns. The prawns were decently fresh.
Salads were outstanding. I especially liked the duck salad with a spicy Thai dressing. Other than that, there were green salad, papaya salad and a couple more from their Thai kitchen.
There were grilled vegetables tossed in olive oil, were green and red peppers, mushrooms zuchini and other items.
Fruit juices were offered and that was a good idea.
Deep fried spring rolls were crispy and generously filled.
There was a crayfish fried rice, some breads and buns.
The rest were all sweet items, with strawberry cheese cake, bread & butter pudding, muffins, brownies, pecan pie, chocolate fountain, fresh fruits and ice creams. The cakes were of the usual high standard to be expected from this hotel.
The fruits were good, with huge strawberries and California seedless black grapes.
There were a selection of fine tea and coffee. One can even order wine/beer (charged separately) if one wishes.
There were like 7 to 8 kinds of ice cream. We quite enjoyed this unusual chestnut whiskey ice cream which we have never had anywhere before.
The food was nice and so were the ambience and service.
But at 38++ per person, it is kind of expensive for an afternoon tea. Will really think twice about returning to this place, though.
However if you are like 1 of my old friends who swallowed 18 raw oysters at 1 buffet, then it may work out to be a great place for you:)

Must Tries: California maki, duck salad, chestnut whiskey ice cream

Cakes and more cakes

People always say, never eat cakes after 9.30pm! But who cares about the calories that comes along with the sinful indulgence? LIC says, have your cake and eat it! Especially since premium hotel cakes are going at half price after 9.30pm!

My secret food partner and i decided to go on a cake-hunt as we recalled that some hotels have half price promotions on their cakes after a certain timing. We went to Marriot hotel first, after which we found ourselves at Grand Hyatt, Mezza9.

Tiramisu ($7, half price $3.5)
The Tiramisu here is reasonably moist, laced with a hint of coffee flavor that doesn’t overpower the sweet mascarpone. I like the subtle taste, as some tiramisu has a very strong wine taste.

Black Forest ($5, half price $2.5)
The huge cherry on top of the Black Forest was what tempted my secret food partner to buy it. Ttogether with the chocolate shavings by the side, its a delight to look at and eat. At such a huge slice, even at its original price of $5 its worth a try.

Strawberry Cheesecake ($5, half price $2.5)
Classic baked cheese cake with a strawberry jelly topping complete with ginormous (gigantic & enormous) strawberries! The oreo cookie base makes us felt like we were eating a cheesecake duo, we can taste the classic cheese cake flavor, and if eaten together with the oreo base, the taste becomes oreo cheesecake!

The Strawberry cheesecake itself was very filling though, creamy and rich!

Caramel cake ($4, half price $2)
We came to a common consent that the caramel cake is our least favourite among the four cakes. For one, it doesn’t have the caramel taste, rather there’s a strong hint of coffee. If you like coffee cake, this is probably the one to get.

Nevertheless, it look pretty and its the cheapest at $2 after half price promotion!

Croissants ($2, half price $1)
Besides the cakes, the baking items are also at half price after 8.30pm. We got the croissants for a dollar after promotion.

Total Bill is a mere $11.50 for 4 slices of cakes and 1 bread. The cakes at Mezza9 although not in the excellent league, but its definitely your premium hotel cakes after all, and at half price promotions they are certainly a steal!

Takeaway temptations, bring home Mezza9 freshly homemade products and enjoy half prices on bakery items from 8.30pm and sliced cakes from 9.30pm daily. 15% discount is also offered for whole akes from 9.30pm.

LIC will be looking to explore many more hotels to enjoy the half price promotions! Cakes and more cakes!

You are always welcome to visit ladyironchef for a full-up on this trip. Whatever written herein are my genuine feelings expressed in words. Food, my dear, is what they call an adventure!

Grand Hyatt ?? Its worst than Quality Hotel......

Went with four of my friends, heared so much about this top rated restaurant but its more over rated than top rated, I was given a table with two tables surrounding me, even though there were other tables available. It is so irritating when I have to share my conversation with the tables beside me, thats how near the seatings were.

Order yakitori, lobster sheng mian, spring chicken, cold seafood platter and steak from the western kitchen. The food tasted normal and the beef was definately overdone, even though there was ample staff, but it was rubbish, they gathered around to talk instead of taking subsequent drinks orders.

When the 'neighbouring' table left, the best part was the cleaning of tables, the staff uses lemon PLEDGE to polish the wooden tables, but I guess part of the PLEDGE flew over to my table and entered my companion drink cos she claimed it taste bitter at the first taste, I asked for the bill and left without even trying the desserts.

Avoid this place at all costs.. !!

Must Tries: Lobster Sheng Mian, the only dish thats nice...

Mezzatea

I was here on a weekend to try out 'mezzatea' - whereby lunch and high tea are combined (only available on Saturday). I was told that there would be a combination of Western and Japanese food and tea items such as a variety of cakes, desserts, and a chocolate fountain.

I was disappointed to find a very limited seafood selection, comprising only of prawns (steamed, served cold), mussels, oysters, and flaked tuna. I had anticipated sashimi, at least some other cooked fish dish, or even smoked salmon, all of which were unavailable. The oysters, though freshly shucked, had a slightly fishy taste. I thought nothing of it though (perhaps I should have, my companion pointed out later on, that the man who was shucking it did not wash the oyster afterwards to remove any broken shells or grit!).

There were only two types of so-called gourmet sandwiches available. Bread was plentiful, however the only soup served was tom-yum (a rather strange combination to have with bread). When I approached the bread counter, I had to request for a cloth from the kitchen staff to hold the bread in place. No glove or cloth was available, which I found odd. To have an open kitchen concept - I would think that hygiene standards would be exceptionally high. I could not bring myself to imagine how many other diners already touched the loaves and sliced away using their bare hands.

The only Japanese food options available were yakitori, hand-rolls (which were made on the spot, upon request), both of which tasted ordinary.

Desserts were probably the highlight of the mezzatea. There was bread pudding, a selection of cakes, éclair, ice-cream, and accompaniments for the chocolate fountain. A variety of other delectable desserts behind the glass counter looked tempting – however those were only available if you order from the a la carte menu. There was also caramelized almonds (wrapped in individual paper cones), which I found highly addictive and tasty.

A selection of fruit juices, gourmet tea, and coffee were also part of the buffet – all of which are free flow.

Ambience wise, as this is only available on Saturday, families with kids comprise the bulk of the dining crowd. The occasional screaming, clatter of cutlery (they double up as toys) and cries from babies and toddlers occur regularly.

There is nothing remarkable about the mezzatea, I would recommend you hop over to StraitsKitchen for a better (predominantly Asian) buffet deal.

Way under Grand Hyatt standard

It's not the first time that I have been to Mezza9 but this is the first time I have encountered a very lousy, amateurish style service.
Went there for lunch with cousin - she ordered duck soup and I ordered tom yam gung. Hers arrived first, steaming hot and the waiter served it of course in a bowl with a little plate under it. After about 5 minutes, my tom yam arrived - the same waiter was bringing it to our table - with his fingers on the top and bottom edge the bowl itself - no plate underneath. The way he brought it over almost felt like he was bringing a bowl of water to wash your hands with - a bit rough standard. And so obviously - even before I tasted it, I knew the soup will be luke warm. Can't handle a bowl of soup like that if it's hot. He put it in front of me & for better presentation, I put my bread plate under it.
After one taste, I sent it back to have it heated up. So the same waiter took it all, with my bread plate & used spoon on the side of the bowl. Two minutes, he brought it back again, still in the same used bowl, my bread plate & the used spoon still on the side - oh yes, and the bits of splash around the plate too.
We ordered a big plate of seafood noodles to share for our mains. In fairness, it was delicious. It's just a shame about the service. Mezza9 had gone to the pits. Giving it 1 out of 10 for service. They really need to spend time in training their food & beverage staff.
