| Too Pricey
Was so hungry & was around that area so decided to have lunch there. Last time I dined in Modestos was more than 2 years ago.
Ordered:
1. Proscuitto with Melon - Served just like anywhere else, nothing special
2. Beef Carpaccio - Generous servings, huge portion but I found it less than satisfying than the above
3. Sausage with Smoked Cheese Pizza - Can't recall the name in Italian. I remember it was the 1st pizza on the right hand side of the menu. Supposed to have smoked cheese which is 1 of my favourite but I just couldn't taste any of that. Pizza was decent since it's fire oven cooked
4. Chicken with Mushroom Forcaccia - Disappointing, the bread was so thick & hard and the rest was not even worth mentioning
The service was so-so. I was asked what do I want to drink so I replied water and since my boyfriend wanted the same he ordered the Pellegrino. To our surprised he came back with a glass of tap water for me & another glass with lemon for him for the Pellegrino..hmm where's the common sense really. Even if he's not sure, could have asked.
It was slightly passed lunch time about 1300hrs. Was pathetically quiet.
My overall experience was rather disappointing as I find some food really overly priced. |

| Service going downhill
After a long time I visited Modesto at Tanglin again last Sunday. I always enjoyed the atmosphere of alfresco dining and of course their great pizza's. Service has always been slightly below par but now it is going from bad to worse especially from the supervisors. There are a lot of them and they are arrogant, rude and unfriendly: they rather talk amongst themselves and let customers wait for service. The junior staff is running around franticly and is trying to be friendly.
As a customer for the past 5 years I won't go back there and will try their other outlets at Vivo and Mount E instead. |

| Modestos
The service is something that I consider to be a notch up from the run of the mill restaurants in town. If one doesn't get too picky, the food here is actually pretty decent. They've brought wood fired pizza to the general public for the longest time before the rise of the other seemingly authentic Italian places that are popping up like mushrooms these days. Still there's this element of them trying a bit to hard to stay relevant in the cuisine they do. Like claiming to serve pasta only al dente which I think is really out of point. If it's really Italian, there is no other way of doing it except mistakes. Also, the strange thing about them in less busy times is the speed at which food is served. I had barely started on my first piece of bread before the starter of the parma ham and melon arrived. Granted that I hadn't reached out for the ham as soon as the plate sat on the table, I was midway through my first piece and the pastas arrived. If you're still missing the point here, it feels pre-prepared.
Modesto's actually has pretty decent gnocchis in gorgonzola sauce. They're served hot, soft and slightly chewy which is the way I think they ought to taste in terms of texture for these dumplings. The portions are also rather generous, to the point where there's probably more than a handful of people that I know which cannot finish a plate of those by themselves. These definitely do not melt in your mouth.
The squid ink tagliatelle wasn't really anything impressive. The overall taste struck me as pretty flat and ordinary despite the shrimp bisque sauce, which turned out to be basically the taste of everything else on the plate. Like the gnocchis which were pretty much mostly the light creamy gorgonzola (at least they were statisfying to some extent), the tagliatelle was mostly the taste of the bisque with very unremarkable shrimps and pan fried scallops that doesn't look nor taste pan fried to me. I had imagined it to be much better.

| Ups and Downs
I came here with some of my visiting foreign friends on Wed 21 Nov as it was near where they were hanging out. It was certainly a vibrant evening with a mostly caucasion couple and family crowd.
I started out with the seafood soup which was rather disappointing. While the overall soup tasted fine, the squid was not fresh (it was mushy) and I believe this contributed to my subsequent diahrroea. Paying $15 for I had expected a lot better.
For my main course I had the salmon cream pasta off their special menu (basically the special menu means that no other promotions such as credit card deals are applicable to these main courses). I must say that this dish saved the day for me as the cream was certainly delicious and meshed well with the smoked salmon bits.
Service was acceptable although there was a little "hick-up" when a waitress took our menu by mistake and gave it to another table when we just sat down, thinking that we had already placed our order. Oh well, certainly not a biggie. |

this place is good for gathering considering they have a rather large dining area outside.. and guys will prolly enjoy it cos there's soccer for them to watch!! and beer too..
the menu has a wide variety as well... and yeah the portions are big. |
