"they did the mash, the monster mash...."
I had the distinct impression that the retro styled Monster Mash Cafe from Edinburgh was British, but apparently from what I saw over at the place on a little bit of their history, the owners hail from Scotland. Nonetheless, the idea of the "cafe" seems to be of straight forward food with minimal frills and elaboration as evident from the menu. They even mention the Bird's Custard and Wall's ice cream that they use. Generally, the main draw of this place is their sausages and mash amongst a bunch of other fare like pies, burgers and British styled breakfast. I saw some vegetarian haggis on the menu which I didn't think to try since it was vegetarian.
One basically just chooses from the list of available sausage, mashed potatoes (real mealy mashed potatoes) and gravy from the menu and whatever's up on the specials on the blackboard. Unexpectedly, the accompanying gravy tasted a little bland. I was thinking that the flavor would be robust or at least, more salty. The onion gravy option did differ from the regular monster gravy by being noticeable sweeter from the onions, but that was pretty much it. The sausages were quite decent with the morrocan lamb being more flavorful than the other.
The bread pudding was frankly, very enjoyable with the piping hot custard that came on the side. The afternoon rain probably contributed to that, but I was quite surprised that nothing was excessively sweet. There wasn't the usual feeling of sugar overload at the end which was a good thing for me. That goes for the Baileys caramel shake which while wasn't the coldest or creamiest shakes around, was quite enjoyable with the flavor of the namesake liquor.
I've no qualms coming back again for more of their food. The cheese burger from the kid's menu on the neighboring table looked pretty good too. Lol.

Oh My God!
I went to this place with high expectations after reading the reviews here but no... I was utterly disappointed...
- The fish and chips are tasteless
- The monster sausages are too bland, not like what the others said over here
- Luckily the Monster Fried Chicken and Lucifer Beef Sausages were ok
- The Monster Mash and the Garlic Mushroom Mash taste the same
- The Macronni cheese sucks totally
My friends who went with me all said they rather eat botak jones! This is certainly not value for money. They didn't even pick up the phone calls most of the time. Service was quite ok.

Monster love
A terrific place to park yourself on a rainy weekend afternoon when a craving for good old S&M* hits you... Nothing nicer than a warm tummy filled with quality sausages and delicious mash, made from real potatoes! Not too buttery and definitely not of the powdered mix variety. Wash it all down with a tasty pint and finish up with some of their decadent but irresistible sticky toffee pudding, before heading home for an afternoon snooze. Nice.
*Sausages & Mash, of course! ;)
Must Tries: pork and kilkenny sausages, sticky toffee pud

I love this place
This is one of my favourite eating places in Singapore, great food and great fun, I really recommend it if you have not been yet. These guys actually make their own sausages, the Pork and Apple is incredible and is the Lucifer Beef. The beer selection is terrific too.
However, I have heard a rumour and I wonder if anyone else knows, but I've heard that the group who own this little treasure are thinking of changing the concept?
Does anyone know? It would be such a shame, but equally I guess I'd be interested to see what these guys plan to do?

Happy Days with Happi Family.....
3 May 2008 : The Happi Family members - AC, 77, NS, CP, RL & JC - gathered here for dinner mainly because we needed some respite from the blazing heat and there were greens for CP to munch on. We were greeted by a jolly woman who ushered us into the dining area.
We ordered : [CP] : MacSween Vegetarian Haggis ($21.00)
[RL] : Monster Mash Fried Chicken ($19.00)
½ of <2 Sausages & Mash - Pork, Parsley & Chilli + Beef with Guinness ($19.00)>
[AC] : 2 Sausages & Mash - Pork, Parsley & Chilli + Lucifer Beef ($19.00)
[JC] : 2 Sausages & Mash - Pork w caramelised onion & Beef with Guinness ($19.00)
[77] : 1 Sausage & Mash - Smoky Pork & Apple ($15.00)
[NS] : ½ of <2 Sausages & Mash - Pork, Parsley & Chilli + Beef with Guinness ($19.00)>
1 x Mojo ($12.00)
TOTAL = $136.40
I really liked my sausages and mash. I did not like the Monster gravy mainly because I like the unadulterated taste of the mash and the gravy wasn't thick and tasty. The mash really filled me up and i was really full for awhile. The pork sausages were much better than the beef sausages. I tried some of RL's fried chicken - It was quite ordinary.
AC was really disappointed with his Lucifer Beef Sausage. He preferred the pork sausages too.
The Happi Family was satisfied with our happy meal and the merry & cheery service at Monster Mash Cafe. We heaved our heavy structures out of this place to continue our play-time elsewhere.
I may return if i can entice my D to come here for breakfast one fine day....
Must Tries: sausages & mash... ..with the merry & cheery service
