Clean, Fresh, Natural Flavors for a healthy delicious lunch

18 Jun 2012
Pictures/Full Review Here

Munch Saladsmith prizes itself as a humble salad bar serving delicious, fuss free and nutritious food at reasonable prices. Starting off as a quaint sandwich shop along Robinson Road in 2005, overwhelming support from regular customers of the year has somewhat resulted in a plethora of salad offerings on a daily basis, where each and every one of them are painstakingly made on a daily basis!

Each of their salads are priced at ($4) for an individual portion, while an option of three or four varities are prized at ($9.80) and ($11.80) respectively.

Chicken Grape Walnut, Oriental Chicken, Chicken Pasta and Bacon & Mash

Tofu Salad & Wild Brown Rice

Out of their 68, yes a whopping 68 offerings, we were presented with 10 firm favorites and the eatery’s best sellers. The Chicken Grape Walnut salad was one of my favorites where its creamy texture was absolutely sublime. The chicken oriental had an Indian influence to it, while the chicken pasta salad felt really average. I loved the play on the contrasting savoriness and sourness of the bacon & mash salad, while it could do certainly with more dressing as it left my throat rather coarse a few mouthfuls into it. The tofu salad came across as refreshing, which again could do with more dressing, while the wild brown rice was too hard for my liking.

Salmon Fillet w 2 Salads ($15.50)

The salmon fillet was overdone for my liking. Yes I know that sous-vide cooking has narrowed my perception that the only way to do justice to a piece of salmon would be to cook it sous-vide! The soba noodles salad had a nice bite to it, with a distinct sesame flavor while the Caesar salad was still largely enjoyable.

Roasted Chicken w 2 Salads ($12.50)

Thankfully, the roast chicken was definitely more palatable overall! Every morsel of the chicken was thoroughly infused with rosemary and fall of the bone tender, while retaining its moisture and juiciness.

Rosti w Sausage ($10)

I would definitely have preferred the exterior of the rosti to be more charred as there any layer of caramelization was impossible to make out, rendering the rosti on the soggy side. The chili flavored sausage on the side was actually pretty good, where I loved the spicy pork flavor it embodied.

Chicken Avocado Sanwich($8.80)

Ending of the meal with some carbs, I loved the contrasting flavors and balance between the silkiness of the pureed avocado and tender chunks of chicken, sandwiched between two pieces of organic wholemeal bread that was really gratifying. I loved how the tanginess of the mustard added some spice to the sandwich overall also!

    Munch Munch

If you step into Munch looking for variety, you could consider it done.

With an extensive menu ranging from freshly-made salads to gourmet wraps to pancakes and even rosti, cubicle rats could stick to this cafe 5 times a week without contracting a hint of boredom. Though the pretty ordinary interior has honestly nothing much to shout about, their dramatic assemble of 60 over salads is truly something to scream for. And for those who refused to be taken hostage by their diet, the 10 over choices of dressings are at your mercy. Variety is simply an understatement.

Testosterone-pumping males need not drop a sweat when your female colleagues drag you into this presumably herbivorous cafe: Munch kindly cater to both the animal-lovers and the carnivorously-inclined. No wonder the 40-odd eatery fills up very quickly during the lunch rush.

We say this is the place even fussy eaters couldn’t counter.

    WE ORDERED:

    1. Roasted Chicken & Salmon Fillet (mains come with 2 salads, 12.5 & 15.5 respectively):

In this salad-themed cafe, it is but normal to be suspicious of the standard of meat on their menu. Nevertheless, we eventually succumbed to curiosity after observing repeated orders on almost every table.

Much to our delight and relief, the salmon and bird did not disappoint a bit. Admittedly, we were almost deceived by the crisp, dry skin of the flame-licked thigh until we pried beneath the surface to find a succulent yet juicy leg meat, oozing essence in its roasted glory. The fork-tender and well-salted meat only meant that we could not get enough of it, and were secretly requesting for seconds. We could still taste the rosemary lingering in our mouths.

The pepper-studded fish was not inferior to the bird in comparison. The rosy-hued meat fell apart with a single tug of our fork, and melted the moment it landed on our tongues. Be pleased that it was neither too raw nor was it overly-prepared on the pan, thus you could expect that the omega-3-filled meat did not last very long on our plates.

    2. Rosti with Sausage,10:

Amongst the medley of salads and sandwiches, the rosti stood out boldly in the menu and it was difficult to ignore. The rosti came pipping hot and crispy, just like we expected, along with a diet-killing dollop of sour cream and spicy bratwurst as sidekicks. As we tore through the entangled plate of fried potatoes beyond its crisp surface, the dish proved to be a little heavy on the palate. And sadly, the puddle of melted sour cream did not help at all.

Unexpectedly though, the spicy bratwurst came to the rescue. The juicy and evenly-spiced sausage was great to the bite and it brought some nice heat to the belly.

    3. Very berry yoghurt, 6:

At a corner of the cooler, the very berry yoghurt yearned for recognition. It was impossible for us to pass up on the dessert when the mish-mash of sweet berries sat neatly atop the layer of strawberry coulis, with each and every one of them screaming for attention. The bright colours were disturbingly inviting, and we plunged right into the yoghurt without hesitation. A perfect marriage of sweet and sour tanginess indeed. Our verdict: Forget those pre-packed yoghurt snacks.

The sheer variety of salads alone in Munch would put most competitors on stranglehold, and we are pretty darn serious when we say we were overwhelmed by the choices we have. We say take your time, the friendly crew will not rush you. Sandwiches, cut-fruits and snacks are also available for those who just want to do an in-and-out. And for executive whose offices are not in Tanjong Pagar, there’s a twin just right in a corner of the Marina Bay Link Mall.

    Cheers.

Hearty eaters can enjoy it too

      02 Mar 2012
When the gf initially suggested Munch for our lunchtime meet-up, she was met with a polite sneer (as polite as a sneer can get, which isn't much) and me trying to find an alternative place to eat. Hearing the word 'Salad type place' made me think of eating a small plate of bland salad and feeling very empty and unsatisfied. With much reluctance, I resigned myself to eating rabbit food for lunch.

I was pleasantly surprised when I entered the premises to be greeted by a wide variety of salads. I narrow-mindedly expected to be greeted by piles and piles of green but was happy to see pasta salads, mushroom salads, soba salad, etc. The variety was good, next thing I was concerned about: the portions. This worry was quickly put at ease when the counter lady piled scoop upon scoop of salad onto my plate.

Had the dory and 2 salad set and was quite full by the end of it. Also had the bagel with cream cheese which was served toasty, this was good too. The girlfriend's rosti with sausage was a hearty serving size and was slightly salty but nothing a little sour cream couldn't fix.

Overall paid 23 for 2 people who left comfortably full and satisfied, will go back again to try their other salads and pancakes next round.

I also recommend this place for:

Brunch, Cheap Eat/Budget, Lunch, Healthy Eating, Large Groups/Gathering, After Work, Vibrant/Noisy, Breakfast
