Stick to the beef ribeye, standard cze char and carb dishes

This place is packed! Reservations are a must, and if you want the limited indoor air-conditioning rooms, you need to make your bookings at least 2 weeks in advance.

I think the major issue with service here is the lack of training of the wait staff. They could not have been any "blurrer". Simple, straightforward instructions that seemed easy enough to understood were, in fact, not comprehended and/or implemented. Our crab turned out female despite our order of its male counterpart, and they added coriander to a dish when we could not have been more emphatic about not having any in any of our dishes. And the wait staff moved like geriatrics on pension. Even the young-ish ones were noticeably sluggish.

Food-wise, the western stuff are really good and worth a return trip and the bumbling service. Seafood is really just so-so, and not quite worth the calories or average cze-char pricing. Don't let the wait staff "cajole" you into ordering the prawns or squid or crabs or seafood whatnots. Stick to the signature ribeye, standard cze char fare and carby dishes and you'll do just fine.

    We had:

    1) Prawn Paste Chicken ($10 for small): Wonderfully fragrant, delectably crisp skin and juicy flesh and marinated to the core for a full-on flavour

    2) Braised Beancurd with Golden Mushrooms ($12 for small), smooth, clear-tasting beancurd in a silky oyster sauce and loaded with strips of enoki, sugar snap peas and carrots

    3) Black Angus Ribeye Steak ($58 at $10 per 100g). Everyone here orders this, and for good reason. The carnivorous beef is thoroughly flavoursome and juicy to a fault

    4) Beef Fried Rice served as part of the ribeye together with the wedges, is another reason to try the ribeye steak. This cholesterol bomb was totally aromatic and flavourful, every last grain of rice having been imbued with beef fat and jus

    5) Salted Egg Crabs ($32 at $4 per 100g): pretty forgettable. The crab was teeny tiny, and the salted egg yolk coating, while generous, was too one-dimensional. I would have liked a bit of spice to kick up the grainy salted egg yolk batter a notch

      Bad Experience

      11 May 2013
Read HGW's reviews and decided to give this place a try 2 days ago for dinner. The alfresco dining area is infested with mosquitoes! Mozzies will actually fly over your head and all over you. So worried to get DENGUE! Food is over-rated. Nothing memorable except the beef steak. Wait staff was amateurish and had to call a few times to get some service. As portions were substantial, the order taker should have given some sort of recommendations. Ended up having to takeaway quite a bit of leftovers! Guess this will be the 1st and LAST time here.

        A Total Let Down

        05 May 2013

Upon arrival, we were quickly seated but had to try several times to get someone to take our order. It was the start of a long waiting game that proved to be too distasteful.
A quick look around and we saw many tables waiting for their food. Often one dish would come and everyone would tuck in quickly (perhaps from the long wait and/or very hungry tummies). Another wait would ensue - often 15 mins or more - depending on the dishes one orders, before the next dish would arrive. Indeed that was our experience. It left one always 'hungering' annoyingly for the next dish.
Signature kailan - The portion was approximately half of a regular plate of kai lan from regular coffeeshop cze char places. One could almost count the stalks of veg. Tastewise, the veg was crunchy, complemented by the crispy toppings.
Garlic pepper prawns - prawns were medium sized and came with reasonable portion of fried garlic/pepper bits. It was fragrant and crunchy enough.
Salted egg yolk squid - generous amount of salted egg and was not too cloying. But squid was tad chewy at first bite. Again portion was far too small and looked quite unproportioned on the plate; the limpy lettuce leaf took up the large extent of the plate.
Tequilla chicken - tasted almost like kung pao chicken. It came in a claypot with dark sauce and what looked like generous helping of chicken was actually many pieces of garlic and onion disguised in the sauce. Taste was quite balanced, not too salty.
Signature ribeye with beef fried rice - After the tequilla chicken came, we noticed that the next table that had arrived after us were served the ribeye as their first dish. Our suspicions were further raised when a 2nd table that came later also were served their beef. When we checked with the staff, he came back and said it was not ordered. We communicated that it can't be since the staff that took our order had asked how we wanted our meat to be done. We asked to see the order and it was a printed copy that did not reflect the beef we ordered. Possibly what was written by the staff was overlooked by the person keying in the info for the receipt. We were told that we had to wait another 20 mins if we still wanted it. At that point, we had waited for close to an hour since our order was taken.
We ordered white rice instead. Rice was hard to swallow and dry.
We just wanted to finish our meal and leave - the tiring wait was unbearable. Next table to us, echoes of 'wah the dish so small' could be heard many times.
During payment, we were second in line. But it took a good 10-15 mins before the staff could produce the receipt for us to pay. We realised that it was because other staff were also giving them bills - way too confusing for the cashier who clearly could not manage.
Conclusion: Despite the staff apologizing for the ordering mishap, the complete experience was unredeemable. Food was ordinary & overpriced. Our bill: $80. Total time: 1h 45 mins.
