| Pure Dissapointment
My parents used to bring me here when I was younger.
At that time, I found this place to be a better than average place for bak kut teh.
However, my brother and I have visited the place three times in the past few months. And I must say, I am thoroughly dissapointed with this place.
I don't really care if they turned away or refused to open for Thaksin and Donald Tsang.
The food is really average or below average now. The meat I got was very very hard and tough. The pig trotters (pig leg/ zhu jiao) was 70% bones, 20% fat, and 10% meat.
The only redeeming factor that they might have is that their food is served in under 3 minutes. Other than that, it fails in all other aspects.
In terms of food, the soup is far too peppery.
In terms of ambience, the place is hot and stuffy.
In terms of value, it is definitely not value for money.
In terms of service, they "seem" to be busy all the time and have no time to serve you or take your order.
If you are thinking of heading down after reading about this place in Makansutra, or in the newspapers, or watching a show on TV, I would suggest that you forget about it.
This place is not as good as it is made out to be. And you will be appalled by their poor and RUDE service.
I have had better Bak Kut Teh at hawker centres, for crying out loud! |

| Never understand the fuss
I really can't.
Look,
- it is expensive "hawker food"
- they charge you the moment food comes then ignores unless you want to spend more money
- pork ribs is kind of tough
- soup is so peppery until it numbs the taste buds
- kidney over cooked, liver too...
- The teapot not washed filled with left over leaves from previous tables
- no ambience to talk about
So why the hell is this place so full always??? I must be missing something... Honestly, if you want good kidney and liver go to Bukit Merah Hawker center near Suburbia. The soup is the hokkien dark sauce type. They kidneys and liver are perfect everytime I go. Plus chicken rice also damn cheap hehe. |

| Peppery Soup Base Bak Kut Teh
Bak Kut Teh is directly translated as pork rib tea. But in actual fact, you don't mix the pork rib with tea. The pork rib is usually boiled in a soup base that is mixed with several spices. Some soup base has a herbal fragrance and some a more peppery one. The Chinese tea is drank as a compliment to the pork rib soup. In many places in Singapore and Malaysia, this local delight may be consumed as a breakfast (like dim sum in Cantonese cuisine).
I have always wanted to bring my wife to savour this Bak Kut Teh at Rangoon Road (黄亚细肉骨茶). Well, I finally brought her to this place. She liked the soup very much. It doesn't have a herbal taste but a very strong peppery one. When we were there, the place was crowded and the car park at the sides of the road are full. There are some extra public car park just behind the block of flats opposite the shop. Although crowded, the place is very efficient. As soon as your order is keyed into a PDA and wirelessly transferred to the kitchen, your food will be out in no time. You just need to wait for an empty table.
We had the following dishes with 2 other friends;
1) Pork rib soup (4 servings)
2) Pig trotter - There's no choice of leaner pig trotters. I prefer the pig trotters served by Han's Bak Kut Teh.
3) Pig Liver soup
4) Tang Or vegetable and lettuce
5) Fried dough sticks (油条)
6) Chinese tea - Called "Gan" tea 甘茶 from Kuala Lumpur. This is a nice complimentary drink to the peppery pork rib soup. It has a sweet after taste after you've drank a small cupful of it.
If you want extra heping of the soup you;ll have to carry you bowl in to get them.

| Good but not great
I had branch there today. Managed to get a carpark lot at the HDB area (behind blk 54) and walk over. The shop is 90% full and the waitress got us a table of 2 fairly quickly. I ordered 2 bak ku tehs, 1 liver n kidney soup and 1 you tiao. The service is very efficient in getting our initial order done. I was lucky to get some luan gu (soft bones) and the meat is well cooked and tender. The soup is tasty, full of garlic and pepper. Howver, I suspect they did add some MSG as I was quite thirsty after finishing the soup. The liver and kidney are cooked nicely and not tough. The you tiao is just "you tiao", a bit too soft and bland.
I had to ask the waitresses a few times before getting my soup top up. They give one extra bowl of soup instead of 2 bowls that I requested.
Overall, the experience is good and but not great considering paying S$19 for 2 person. |

| I've had better ones, thank you
I was all filled with excitement as I went to Ng Ah Sio Pork Ribs Soup Eating House on Saturday for my brunch. Afterall I have heard so much about it, especially the big HooHah on the papers and also the fact that many celebrities and political figures have been here just to taste this local dish.
The 3 of us who were there managed to find a seat quite easily. We were surprised to find their servers all armed with PDA. Good! They are definitely up to date with technology. Let's hope that their food lives up to their standard as well.
We are not those who really knows how to appreciate tea, so we made do without it. We ordered each a bowl of Bak Kut Teh, peanuts, Tung Oh, and of course yutiao. They arrived shortly after the order was placed. Great on efficiency!
As we proceeded to taste the soup, we realised that it was a little too peppery and spicy for our liking. The meat was on the tough side. A little overcooked and the peanuts were not soft enough. The vegetables were ok, not really fantastic and rather normal I would say. Just soaked in gravy/soup. As for the yutiao, nothing to complain or compliment about.
We left the place, glad that we tried as we know we will not come back again, and disappointed that it didn't satisfy our tummies. |
