this is an adorable little bakery at the corner of the eatery strip opposite beauty world. somehow, i think because of its old world look and the items they sell, i think of "La Foule" by Edith Piaf when I come here. I know Edith Piaf is french and this is a chinese bakery, but i still cannot help but feel sort of transported back in time when i come here.
My pulse quickens the slightest bit when i walk towards the shop from the bus stop. I anticipate what i will buy, and i'm never disappointed. Despite being such a tiny shop, NKL offers up quite a good range of patisserie. They have those ubiquitous old fashioned curry, red bean or sausage (that are nothing like breadtalk's) buns that are so reminiscent of my childhood. They are famous for their egg tarts and tau sar piah (which they make in about 10 different flavours) though.
I once came to buy the egg tarts, thinking i could treat myself after a good hike, and had to leave empty handed because someone had just swept out all their egg tarts for the day. I've to give the cakes some mention too. I really like their cheesecakes, which include new york cheesecake, strawberry cc, walnut cc and one of my favourites, german cheesecake (a lighter version of the american cheesecake). The german cc is delightfull tart, which i feel is great in cheesecakes to help balance out the richness. They have carrot cake, black forrest and chocolate mousse as well, but i've only tried the cheesecakes.
did i mention the cakes are only around $2.80 a slice? What a steal :)
overall, i feel this place is worth visiting for the lovely feeling you get after you buy something here. You feel as if you're helping to preserve a tradition, yet you get to satisfy your craving for more modern stuff like the cheesecakes. Plus the owners are nice :D
I hope this place remains exactly as it is another 50 years from now (a terribly difficult feat considering the speed at which things change nowadays.)
