Getting better..but where are the people??

My 2nd or 3rd time here i think, can't fault the food this time and the service was good. Great mixed platter with a range of tasty starters. I had the steak fajitas which are hard to beat although a touch stingy with the meat..lots of onions though. Missus had the gumbo which was hot and not too spicy.
Good selection of wines, very nice merlot by the glass!
OK it's not genuine tex/mex but better than the slop served up at places like chachacha

Saturday night 830pm...place was pretty quiet as were all the resaurants in this strip including the new ones at the back...This time last year, you could not get a seat or a parking spot..:(

Must Tries: Jalapeno peppers!!

Dinner at North Border

A lovely black and white house converted into a restaurant with a big decking and lots of greenery. We sat outside and found it very peaceful.

I'm a real meat eater and asked if the chef could knock up something bigger than their largest offering (around 200g). The chef sent the message back that he could do me a 350g Sirlion at $54 which sounded fair. I didn't have big expectations but the steak turned out to be excellent (similar to one I had at Mortons) but the pepper sauce was only mediocre, more like gravy. My wife had some sort of chicken and vegetable puff pastry and was a bit disappointed as it had a very bland / corn flavour. We had no starters but were offered a very nice free vegetable dip with nachos. Desserts were ok, nothing too special, my ice cream had been defrosted and refrozen (little icy bits in it).

What was excellent was their wine selection and the fact that you can go into their wine room and look at all of the bottles (without someone bothering you while you browse). I found the wine selection to be extensive, impressive and surprisingly affordable. My wife and I had a bottle of Rupert and Rothschilds (from South Africa) which did not disappoint. After dinner, we had a small bottle of dessert wine which was also good.

It was a mediocre to good dinner, my opinion strongly swayed by the good steak and wine! Might go back.

Oh, service was a bit mixed, 2 pretty helpful but useless waiting staff and a 3rd very professional waiter who helped us with the dessert wine.

Mexican Fare on a Singapore night

My boyfriend and I went there on a Sat night about 8pm. The place was quite packed. We sat outside (al fresco) dining. The ambience was quite romantic but a bit too dim. The only light we had was the small candle tea light on the table. Had to strain our eyes to see the menu!

Food:
Starters - Corn tortilla chips with salsa (This is complimentary!)

Soup - Chicken and prawn gumbo. This soup is almost like a meal in it self. Filled with a lot of ingredients, a hearty soup.

Appetiser - Cheese stuffed jalapenos with mango & avacado dip. Order only if you can take hot stuff! This is a deep fried dish. As the name says, it is jalapenoes stuffed with cream cheese and something else. It is served in a edible bowl. (I think it is wonton skin). The mango & avacado dip is delicious. It also takes away the spicyness of the jalapenoes.

Main course -
1. Herb baked chicken with stuffing. This is chicken breast rubbed with herbs and baked. It is served with vegetables and a little bit of olive rice. The meat is still juicy even though it's breast meat. The rice is a bit hard. I don't know if it's the mexican style of rice but it seems like the rice at the bottom of the rice cooker.. haha..

2 Baby-back ribs. My boyfriend ate this. The sauce does not overpower the taste of the meat. The meat seperates from the bones easily!

Service:
I must say the service is very good. The waitress were very prompt in refilling our cups even though the place was almost full. The most surprising thing was, the waitress actually came over to help us open the wet tissues when dinner was almost over!

Overall:
Good for romantic dates. However, I don't think the food is truly representative of mexican food.

Wonderful ambience now that the wannabes have all gone to Dempsey

The last time we were at the Rochester area was about two years ago where we were scared away by the sheer crowd. But we figured that it was time to give the place another chance since most of the wannabes would have migrated off to Dempsey.

Indeed! The place was perfectly empty, quiet and relaxing. We chose North Border because the reviews on HGW were quite good. It was great sitting outside, with only 3 other tables occupied, enjoying the night breeze and quietness!

Food wise, they didn't have the famous corn bread (drats!!). We had the stuffed jalapenos (ok only), ribs (quite good), garlic bread (bad, chewy) and refried beans (which tasted a hell lot better than when we tried to do it at home).

Overall, food was slightly above average and ambience was near perfect. Very good after a hectic day at work.

Legal High

I was in the mood for Mexican and with all the popular places unable to take a last minute booking, I ended up at North Border staring down a decidedly more Texan menu. What great luck.

We started with some corn chips and salsa. The salsa is made with tomatillo and coriander which gives it a slightly sweet flavour. It was a nice change over the "who has the hottest salsa" competition the other houses seem to run.

We chose buffalo wings and corn bread as appetizers. The wings are smothered in a thick BBQ sauce and don't disappoint.

And the corn bread just blew my mind. These guys have the best corn bread I've ever had and I've had a lot with the butt to prove it. The bread tasted like 3 parts butter, 1 part corn and the rest must be cocaine because I was high from the stuff all night.

The ribs arrived while my butter-sugar high was still in full effect. The ribs melt in your mouth and where I usually avoid pork, I couldn't stop myself from eating a whole plate of these babies.

Lest you think me too effusive, it was not perfect. I was disappointed with the weak margarita - a place like this should make an effort to do margaritas well. But when I complained they offered a switch without hesitation and I ended up with quite a decent classic mohito which for taste rivals the big ass blueberry mohitos they offer next door at Graze.

Their house salad dressing could also do with some thought - it tasted like cooking oil with not much else to add flavour. But this was hardly to be noticed. The music also seemed a bit loud before my sugar high set in and it would be nice to not hear the same piece of music 3 times in an evening. I like bossanova but not that much.

I was too stuffed to try the desserts but if I'd had room I would certainly have just ordered another plate of corn bread.
