| Old Town In The Old Town of Chun Tin
In a short span of two weeks, I'd visited this joint twice. The first time was for coffee after a hearty lunch, and the second time, for their food.
The only time that I'd ever stepped into OldTown White Coffee was when I visited a friend in Kuala Lumpur. So I'd say that I was pretty egged up to go for it in Singapore.
Question: How does a typical Singaporean wannabe foodie like me choose their food?
Answer: Look out for the chef's reccomendation (CR) in the menu!
Anyway, my colleagues and I let our fingers do the choosing. Chicken Curry Rice, Nasi Lemak, Curry Mee, and a bowl of Assam laksa to share among the five of us. Not feeling contented, we ordered the CR - 2 plates of polo bun and 2 plates of butter kaya bread. I tried Curry Mee but the first five minutes saw me removing oil that drowned my noodles. After that, it was smooth sailing.
Another CR was the Xi Mut Milk Tea. It was a visual treat to see the denser tea mixing with the white milk.

| i wanted to be my own judge..
for the oldtown white coffee of course! Had this establishment noted down since god knows when. Ever since I watched the first branch established itself at big splash, and later to my surprise when i spied on a new branch being built in the neighbourhood.
I was ecstatic of course.. reason being that I honestly loved the fresh roasted coffee from those old coffee shops in malaysia. It was just something about traditional well kept secrets about how they roast the coffee combined with the nostalgic feel of the marble countertops and high ceiling fans that attracts me to them. Of course, the oldtown white coffee had the same setup and ambience, with the slight glitch (or should i say bonus) being the comfortable air-conditioning. Singaporeans are so spoilt. But that's beside the point...
After being directed to our seats, by very enthusiastic staff i must say... My bf and I took a quick scan of the menu and decided upon just having drinks and the kaya butter toast (both signatures of the place as identified by the coffee bean side beside its name). THe menu was extensive, providing many dishes similar to those served up in the traditional coffee houses such as curry mee and nasi lemak. Impressive and very delectable looking ( based on the image i capture from the neighbouring table).
The verdict, the iced xi mut tea ($2.30) was overly sweet and left a highly undesirable effect of ge-lartness on the tongue after drinking. The white coffee ($2.00) fared much better... (but word of advice, pls note that you want it less sugar if you're like me.) The kaya toast on the other hand was a total flop!!!! thank god we only called for a single serving ($1.10).. the kaya spread was pathetic and large portions of the bread surface was hardly even covered!!! i was very disappointed...
But still... i will drop by for the nasi lemak.. i think..
definitely not accompanied with a cup of coffee. You're better off drinking a your kopi at a neighbourhood kopitiam instead... |

| New Kid on The Block
I had tried Old Town at Big Splash and was pleasantly surprised by its appearance at this Upp Bukit Timah location. The Hokkien Prawn Mee and Curry Chicken w/ Bread I ordered came promptly, and were rich in flavour, much as I had remembered the Malaysian flavours to be. However, the chicken and potatoes in the curry could have been cooked for longer as they was a little on the firm side... perhaps having curry at 11 am on a Thursday morning was too early? No complaints, overall. |
