Upsetting experience!

This restaurant has completely deteriorated in terms of service and offering. I hardly ever write such nasty reviews, but my experience today really upset me. I used to enjoy eating lunch in Onaka and have done so several times in the past, especially when I want healthy and reasonably affordable set lunches. I went back for lunch today and was surprised to learn that the set meal no longer comes with a drink. And apart from that, only a more expensive 3-course option is available unlike in the past where you could choose between 2 or 3 courses. Nevertheless, my friend and I still happily went ahead and ordered our lunch sets and asked for cold water to be served. Few mins later, they came back and served us piping hot water -- when we asked if they could change it to cold water instead (giving them the benefit of the doubt that it was an honest mistake), we were told that it was now their "policy" not to serve cold water unless we pay for sparkling or still water. When we asked whether they can serve ice on the side and we'll add it to our hot water ourselves, we were told NO because it was their policy not to do that unless we ordered a proper beverage. I thought that was absolutely ridiculous!! I wanted to walk out of there (unfortunately my set lunch had already come). I can't imagine that a proper restaurant would actually refuse to serve ice to their guests! The least they could do like other restaurants is charge a nominal amount for iced water. Needless to say I was completely unhappy and I'm surely never going back to Onaka. They may have saved a few cents from giving out iced water, but they have now lost a returning customer.

A Healthy Lifestyle

This place is all about serving healthy food that is tasty. Start with the watermelon sashimi topped with aga aga followed by the healthy Tofu Avocado with hazelnut dressing.

From the carbs I would recommend going for the glutten free Mushroom Soba and the Chili Crab Capelini for something a little heavier.

For something interesting, try the Maritime Barley Risotto – which has no rice.

Meat lovers would do well with the 48 Hr Beef. If you like your lamb a little gamy, the Miso Lamb would do just fine.

End your meal with the Avo Choco Emotions, which is sugar free and dairy free and an organic coffee.

Good organic food, nice place thats better than you would expect from a restaurant in a small mall. We had the 42 hours sous vide beef from new Zealand together with sea bass. Nice wines as well, oesterbaai white. We will come back.

The team behind Onaka is a strong advocate to the concept of Conscious Cuisine and encourages their guests to become conscious of the food they consume- that is through being aware and taking pleasure in the flavours, texture and presentation of food while understanding the nutritional health benefits they provide. Using whole grains, unrefined organic sugar, unrefined brown sugar and palm sugar and minimising the use of extra- virgin oil, coconut- oil, butter and so on while adopting healthier cooking methods such as baking, steaming and sous- vide, Onaka provides an extensive range of organic vegetarian and non- vegetarian dishes for its customers.

Chock full of ingredients, the Nicoise Paper Roll comprised sliced raw tuna, cucumber, french beans, herbed egg salad, dehydrated olives and aioli. This did help much to whet our appetite, given that the main highlight of the dish- the raw tuna was smooth and fresh; what one would in turn expect in a Japanese eatery.

The Maritime Barley Risotto was one of my personal favourites from the selection we had. Bathed in a savoury gravy and rich with fresh prawns and mussels, the flavours from the delicacy lingered in the mouth for a while.

The Roasted Mushroom Soba was really memorable- a vegetarian number that really tugged on my heartstrings for there was a ‘home- cooked’ feel to it. The noodles had a nice bite to them and each strand was well- coated with flavour; the lightly aromatic perfume of mushrooms was very much apparent in the dish. I would certainly pay a return visit to Onaka for this one.

Our verdict then was that Onaka’s Miso Lamb would definitely deserve a permanent starring role in the menu. Cooked to tender perfection, the dish was lip- smackingly delicious. The Miso paste endows the meat with a hit of richness that made it much better taste- wise.

Very much a must- order in the restaurant, the Duck Pancake was so satisfying that we had to order another plate to share. Each bite off brought about an explosion of notably sweet flavours and gratifying differing textures, with each ingredient providing for a different note in the mouth, with none discordant.

Banana Pastillas; the better of the two desserts we were served, there was an intense banana taste that was very much fragrant while being slightly tempered by the accompanying citrus berries and hazelnut ice- cream if had all together. It did certainly do much to provide for a satisfying end to our dinner at Onaka.
