Had Dinner there last week

Had dinner there last week. Great ambience and settings. I think this whole venue feels alot more exclusive than Dempsey Hills with the white-colonial bungalows. If you are planning to come to One Rochester, I recommend you park at the open-air carpark right as you turn in from the main road instead of going all the way in or you will end up having to park at the HDB carpark, like we did.

I had the seared sword-fish for starters and it was pathetically small..... like seriously, big giant white plate and small tiny piece of seared sword-fish.... which would be fine if the sword-fish tasted heavenly but erm it was pretty disappointing to say the least. My partner had the roasted aubergine salad and well it was nothing to scream about ...

I had the crispy duck confit for main... It was a good decent confit but nothing special ... considering the price, i think the confit at the Little French Stall or Bistrot at Indoor Stadium is way better value .......

Service was good though. ... many waiting staff standing around waiting to pick up the next falling culinary .......

The best part of the night i guess was the glass of white wine i had which was a Malborough Sav-Blanc .... but i guess that is really no compliment to the restauant....

I will be back next time if somebody else is treating :-P

where is the pastry bar?

Visited this place together with a bunch of my dessert kakis after reading a few articles on Karen Charlotta's debut as head pastry chef of the pastry bar at one rochester. Not that I've been a huge fan or anything, but her feature on the Sunday times 'FOodie confidential' proved to be a major draw factor to her dessert creations. With that, I and my brave dessert kakis gamely ventured into the darkness and well forested areas of Rochester to get a slice of the cake.

Upon arrival, I was enchanted by the grounds. The entire feel of it completed with an old-school colonial bungalow, billowy drapery, candle lightings, moving streams of water and stone-paved walkways. It was like walking through time.

When we asked the serving staff to be directed to the pastry bar, we were brought upstairs to the less crowded and definitely more bright seating area which used to be the 'library' linked to the balcony. The floor was a mish-mash of styles. Tropical forests painted the walls on one side with leopard and tiger skin printed pillows stacked up. The other side was filled with heavy looking grandfather leather chairs and lit by dim lightstands. Extremely charming.

We ordered the chocolate souffle with poached peach in Rioja Sangria, Bailey parfait with coffee gelee and cocoa nibs foam, some sort of berries with fresh raspberry sauce and croquante. and lastly chocolate mousse and hazelnut praline served with chai poached pears. that was already 4 out of the 6 desserts on their menu. Still, I and my dining companions found none to be satisfying or intriguing. For me, I thought the chai poached pears were brilliant, but paired with a chocolate mousse just fumbled the entire equation.

Overall, i feel that perhaps the desserts should be altered a little to suit the tastes of the general public. With the pastry bar, it's a case of trying too hard to pair flavors together that makes it almost unpalatable for most. oh well.. definitely won't be going back there for desserts!

Brunch at One

Wanted a relaxed easy lunch - and elected to try Rochester. Up the flight of stairs and into Rochester. Lovely surrounding and very Western setting.

Food: Ordered their Eggs benedict which came in a huge plate with 2 eggs, loads of bacon, muffin and a small portion of rosti. Partner had their omelette with ham and cheese which came with a cheese sausage, could not finish to ate the omelette too. Great tasting but maxxed out my quota for eggs. Very limited menu - seems the brunch menu is more for drinks and desserts - more for tai tais than for beer guzzling men.

Ambience: Best part of Rochester is their inviting outside seating (not for me - I need airconditioning). Indoor seating was awful, sofas with no dining tables and chairs, we sat on a high chair and ate off their high bar-style table. Had a live band that sang rather mournfully.

Value: Pretty stiff for eggs.

Service: Although not crowded, staff not attentive - in early switch off mode at about 1.30pm.

Must Tries: Eggs Benedict - but be aware, it's enough for two.

So... there really wasn't any mosquito...

I took my parents to One Rochester for a belated wedding anniversary dinner earlier this evening. After spending 2 hours at one of the dining trellises, my mother was finally convinced by the "0 mosquito" claim and was pleased that she did not need to fish out the bottle of tiger balm from her bag.

For starters, we had the lightly seared swordfish belly with sakura cress, grapefruit and yuzu dressing, cream of wild mushrooms & truffle essence, and white onion velouté with duck confit ragout. My father was particularly impressed by how the white onion velouté was creamy and yet light. The cream of wild mushrooms is afterall one of the signature dishes. The aroma of fresh assorted mushrooms filled my mouth as the silky smooth soup trickled down my esophagus. A definite must-try at One Rochester! The citrus condiments complemented the swordfish belly very well, too.

For mains, we ordered the oven-baked chilean cod with miso, steamed pak choy and celeriac puree; slow-braised black angus beef cheek with celeriac puree, glazed mushrooms and pancetta; and spice-coated lamb shank with melange of vegetables and truffle mashed potato. The Chilean cod was a bit disappointing as it was bland and thus, slightly fishy. The beef cheek was succulent and flavorful. The lamb shank was a bit too salty to my liking, but my mother thought it was tender and well marinated. She literally hijacked it after I offered her a tasting!

Despite being very full, I couldn't resist one of my favorite desserts, Rochester Trifle. The crunchy almond croquant and fresh berries ended my meal with a light refreshing touch.

Service was alright, but perhaps the server could put on a smile and speak more audibly? Other than that, the beverage manager and assistant dining manager came over a few times to ensure that everything was fine. And yes, they did look very cheerful.

Overall, a delightful experience!

mad about martinis

I love martinis, and there's definitley plenty to love about 1 Rochester with their Martini Mayhem promotion. For like $50something, it was free flow martinis through the night! Another thing to LOVE is that they actually do fantastic martinis, not the half-arsed efforts from most other places that thinks anything coming out from a shaker into a martini glass is a martini.
Helps that they've got great munchies, and with their gorgeous outdoor garden area, perfect for our monthly girl's night out!

Must Tries: MARTINIS!!!!!
