| Marvelous Risotto
I came to Tanglin Mall with the intention of going to Chilli's but they told me I had to wait for 25 minutes for a table for 2 (on a Sunday night!). Being hungry, I decided to go to Oomphatico's instead. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise.
Firstly I fell in love with the pseudo-European posh decor of the place, and its comfortable seats. But knowing that nice decor means nothing when the food is bad, I decided to reserve my judgement for later.
The seafood chowder soup was thick and filled with ingredients, including prawns and mussels. I was pleasantly surprised that the portion of soup was quite large - instead of a wide, shallow bowl it was a deep bowl that didn't look that big at first, but its size was deceptive as it was actually quite deep. The main courses were equally deceptive.
Having went on a vacation to Italy at the end of last year, I discovered a new dish which was previously unknown to me - risotto. Since that delicious trip to Italy, I have not found a place in Singapore that could replicate the taste of the risotto I ate there until I came to Oomphatico's. I ordered the risotto with duck confit and found that not only did the risotto match those that I ate in Italy, and duck was tender and delicious. My companion also ate the Duck confit dish, but without risotto (we just love duck) and it was equally tasty. Again, I felt that the portions were filling although they didn't look so at first glance.
Although we were already quite full, we had already ordered dessert, so we gamely went on (there's always more room for dessert). Furthering my Italian fantasy, the tiramisu was delightful, soft and creamy. I wished there was more of it though, as I loved it so much. The creme brulee came with chestnut ice cream, which was tastier than expected given that I don't like chestnut. The creme brulee itself was ok, although I'm not a fan of the brown layer of coffee (?) at the bottom, and I personally prefer custard that is lighter in consistency. However, the whole blended into a generally appealing taste.
Service-wise, it was ok, anyway I'm not that fussy about service. I don't need the staff to kowtow to me. The only thing I insist upon is that my ice water is refilled often, which was the case here, so I'm happy.
I would definitely come here again as I think they are going in the right direction with the food and the portions and it's quite good value for the steep prices. |

| great food and great service
boyfriend and I went to tanglin mall looking for chillis but it was not opened yet, so we stepped into oomphaticos.
what a great find!
we ordered the free-range chicken and the wagyu beef. both were delicious. the gravy used for the dishes was fantastic. we had "that really expensive choclolate dish" for dessert. the lava cake was special with a tiny pinch of salt. we ordered a bottle of wine to go with the food, hence the overall bill was slightly on the high side.
service crew was attentive despite it being a saturday evening. will pop by again for sure. |

| Hair found on dish
We make an order for a dessert named "That expensive dish", and to our
astonishment, it came with a short piece of hair at the side of the souffle
cup. We asked a service assistance for an explanation. She apologised,
replied that it could be an eye-lash and told us that she would change the
dish, but we'll need to wait for another 10 minutes or so.
10 mins or so later, a person whom I assumed could be the floor manager
approached with the dish and apologised for the incident. Again, we asked
for an explanation, and he replied that a hair could possibly fall into the
dish and all he could do (and which is the usual policy of the cafe) is to
redo the dish.
As a consumer, and especially in today's context, when conscientious
hygiene level is at a paramount. I believe this cafe needs to ensure
that their level of hygiene is in check. Sufficient hygiene work practices should be in place.
To some, I maybe over-reacting over a piece of harmless eye-lash. The point I'm putting across extremely is an undeniable fact that this cafe does not seems to see that the lack of hygiene check and policy is a big problem.
Appalled by the could-not-be-more-bothered attitude of the floor manager, I questioned him
on the level of hygiene that is in force. Unfazed, he repeated that the hair hair happen to fall and "It's natural".
Bowled over by his 'natural' answer, I repeated "You are telling me it's perfectly normal for hair to fall into the food?".
He nodded and walk away.
Obviously, at oomphatico's the level of hygiene is highly questionable, customer service extremely
poor, attitude obnoxious.
I am sure I will never ever step into the cafe again. |

| yumalicious food with attentive service
I went to Tanglin mall and chanced upon this restuarant opp Traders hotel last week. I stepped in with not much anticipation but I was caught off guard with the attentive service. I ordered the mushroom soup to start off which comes across as hot, nice and not too creamy, followed by chicken ceaser salad S$ 16. The grilled sakura chicken breasts gives the salad a healthy twist compared to the normal bacon ceasars. My partner ordered a glass of cold beer at S$ 12 nett which is a steal around the area at a whopping 1 pint glass! We shared a Wagyu beef S$ 38 with barley risotto which tasted heavenly. They serve you quality food in good portions with value for money. Nice smiley staff with attentive service though they were busy when we visited. I will come back again for the service and will try the freshly made pizze soon! |

| Nice atmosphere but was the chef on leave?
Had a nice tai tai lunch with my 9 month old daughter (she brought her own grub). Was really not all that hungry so I asked nicely if I could order from the kids (read: cheaper) menu instead. The waiter nicely hid his "you're such a cheapo" face behind his "I'll check with my manager" reply.
Apparently my cheapo face managed to bring me to safety (read: wallet friendly) area.
I ordered the fish and chips, grilled. The fries were nice but then again they looked like frozen fries. But man, the amount on salt on them was scary. The fish (snapper) was rubbery. And I found a fish scale on the skin. I think that's really not so nice.
I also had the elderflower drink with lime and lemon. The tasted reminded me alot of laundry detergent, but (if you can imagine) in a good way. Not that I've tasted laundry detergent before. What I'm saying is that the drink tasted funny but I liked it.
The atmosphere was great (sitting outside was nice and relaxing), the music was nice and at a non-intrusive volume, the service was good but I don't think I will return. I didn't have a good experience with the food, and the prices are not appealing enough for me to give the place another try. |
