Shiok yong tau fu!
Jan 11, 2008I was at Borders when I suddenly remembered my favourite yong tau fu place from many years ago. All the way there I was hoping it was still around. I think I wept silent grateful tears to find out that it was, after so many years.
It must have been one of the most expensive 'normal' (i.e. non hakka kind) YTFs I've had. I paid $7.60 for 9 items in my soup (including veg, not counting beehoon) and a cup of barley.
While the food was good, I somehow can't understand the justification for the price. They claim to have special soup (which was good, yes, and they give you a generous heap of soy bean as well), and special sauces (which were good as well).
It is one thing when a place has been around for years. It is heartening that nothing has changed. The people, the system, the taste, the crampness, all still the same.
If you don't mind eating under stressful conditions (with others watching you and wishing you'd hurry) for the sake of good food, then no harm checking it out. But be prepared to wait. That too, has not changed. A good 20 minute wait from the time you pick your food to the time that food goes into your mouth. At least.
I'll return only if I'm in the area. Won't purposely make a trip down. I think they are closed on weekends by the way
Tips on how to eat there like a pro: When you reach, head straight for the picking counter. Then DO NOT look for a seat. Just give your bowl to the guy there and he will give you a number. Remember it. Then hang around until he calls you to give you your seat.Spent about
