Soothingly decorated in wood and earth tones, this well-established restaurant showcases Indonesian cuisine from across the archipelago. The extensive menu has evolved to also incorporate some Chinese flavours, though staples like beef rendang, Indonesian curry chicken and stir-fried kangkong remain popular.

A Pleasant Treat at an Ulu Restaurant
27 May 2008Well, we headed over for a colleague's treat on a Tuesday afternoon and amazingly, it is crowded! The setting wise is average (think Rice Table Suntec), service was soso coz it was pretty crowded.
We had fish, vege, prawns, tahu telor, sotong and chicken. The prawns (fried in the green crunchy leaves) and BBQ sotong were fantastic.
I wouldn't exactly say this place is value for money, but may be worth a shot if you're into indonesian food - the food we ordered were tasty and satisfying. Thought it was a little expensive for the location and time of day, but it wasn't too bad (but then again, it was a treat... :P)
It's unlikely I'd go there again, not because of the food at least, but because of the gawd forsaken location. Could possibly try the other more accessible branch at far east square.
: The BBQ Sotong!

Wanted to introduce this without looking for reviews. Here goes my review...
14 May 2008If you're a chicken lover, the marinated charcoal grilled chicken (Ayam Bali) is a must have. The chicken pieces smells great and the outside skin is crispy with a juicy inside. My asian counterparts preferred the Petai Udang Pedas, which is the smelly beans(That's what they told me) fried with prawns and sambal chilli. To me, not exactly my type of beans. For vegetables, either the stir fried kangkong with belachan chilli(Tumis Kangkong Belachan) or their stir fried mixed vegetables with prawns and garlic(Sayur Combinasi) is simple yet it has a really great taste. The way they serve the rice is also fascinating, the rice is wrapped in banana leaves held together by a toothpick, when you open it up, the fragrant smell of piping hot white rice with the blended aroma of banana leaves is just so heavenly. I believe it's the only restaurant in Singapore to pack rice with so much effort. Not forgetting the desserts(I loved it!) our favourite choice was the traditional indonesian avocado dessert(Alpukat) or Chendol. The Alpukat had a very refreshing taste and my female colleague told me it was good for the skin. I didn't quite like the chendol. Will definitely go there more often since it's near my work. (Most indonesian words shamelessly copied from www.pagi-sore.com (Memory ain't that good) I will give it two thumbs. P.S: They even threw in a free parking, minused off from the bill.

Indonesian Goodness
16 Apr 2008It's a lunch treat from a colleague, so I can't tell how much we spent on this lunch for 6.... don't look anywhere close to cheap to me.
After going through the menu, I have high expectation of the Tahu Telok which has a picture that looks so good, but the sauce which tasted quite blend came as quite a disappointment.
Luckily theres the BBQ Sotong with Sembal so wonderful, the deep fried fish being served piping hot and chrispy, and the prawn with petai (smelly beans) are good enough to save the day.
We ordered the "Curry Fish Head" which also looks good in the menu. It tasted alright, but the fish head was not serve hot (temperature) enough to my liking.
Overall, this place is good for lunch or dinner, for people working or living around there. As for me, would I make a trip there specially for another lunch or dinner? Humm....
