Excited about the new stylish, timeless, contemporary and green Carlton City Hotel that opened rather recently near my workplace, we decided to have our 2014's Valentine's Dinner at Plate @ Carlton City Hotel located at 1 Gopeng Street, Level 3, Singapore 078862. The number to dial is 6632 8888. Like the exterior of this grand, lavish hotel, the interior exudes elegance and a quiet serenity as well. Heightened by its Chinese New Year c** Valentine's Day decorations and soft romantic music, Plate @ Carlton City offered a soft, romantic and exquisite ambience for all the couples celebrating a special night together. t was a four-course dinner named "Wine & Dine Me" planned out specially for this event. We were first served the starter platter of Crispy Scallop, Lobster Roll and Smoked Salmon with Spring Salad. I started with the Lobster Roll which was no doubt freshly-sweet and sumptuous - even the crispy biscuit "spoon" holding it was a delicacy in itself. The Smoked Salmon had a bouncy texture like sashimi, unlike the usual dry and salty type - so I enjoyed this chewy item very much as well. As for the Fried Scallop, it was absolutely crispy as well, but reminded me alot of Old Chang Kee-style fried seafood items. Dipped in the chilli sauce it was served with, this fusion item was definitely scrumptious as well. The mains were served after the soups were gaily consumed. There was also the Herb-Crusted Garoupa Fish Fillet with Red Beet Risotto, Asparagus Spears and Mushroom Cream Foam. While the gently flavor of the fish was enhanced by the mild taste of the herb, the texture was a little too bouncy, like, undercooked. I was all right with it and I did not detect blood or experience discomfort, but had wondered if the springy texture of the fish was due to it being somewhat raw / rare. I loved the beet risotto though - subtly saltish, with wonderful sweetness of the beetroot and chewy texture of the rice. Having been to Plate @ Carlton City Hotel when it first opened, I was pleased to be heading back, this time for their buffet lunch for Chinese New Year. The usual buffet lunch for weekday is SGD$38.00++ but I believe the CNY menu now costs more. Service was rather professional and polite; they were also very efficient at clearing used plates.
Ambience was as I remembered it - dimly-lit to create atmosphere, dark earthly hues to lend a sophisticated air, and well-spaced. Pool view was abundant on the front, and a beautiful alfresco terrace sits at the back. They serve International buffet for their lunch and dinner, but there's also an ala carte menu available if you would prefer not to have buffet.
I started with some Seafood - mussels, scallops, prawns etc. The seafood was saccharine with sweetness, and flesh was springy.
Sashimi and Sushi were next to the seafood section, and I enjoyed the items in this section as well - these were the 2 stations I refilled my plates with.
The festive / Chinese New Year section comprised of Yam Ring stuffed with lots of other ingredients, fish, tofu, Sea Cucumber dishes, bak kwa dishes etc. There were also fragrant (lotus leaf?) Glutinuous Rice.
Finally, desserts. I loved this section because there were lots of variety - from cakes and kuehs to Chinese dessert soup to Ice Kacang and ice-cream. The array of colorful sweet foods tantalised us even as we just looked at them; some of them were too sweet, but I liked the cakes.

The service here was good, the staff were mostly very polite. Plates were cleared regularly too. The ambience here was really cosy and relax, the feeling is just like at your own home.
The food quality here definitely meets up to my expectations! Except the desserts were average. With the deal.com dining voucher, it's definitely worth it though the variety is not wide. I find the quality of the food here was quite good, confirmed much better than the Carlton Hotel in City Hall. If you're working near Tanjong Pagar or you're on leave, why not come down to Plate to try this affordable with quality buffet?

Now you don't have to wait till night time to have BBQ. At Plate in Carlton City Hotel, you can enjoy BBQ Buffet from the morning 11.30am till 3pm on every Sun! The service here was good, the staff were mostly with a warm smile and very polite. Plates were cleared regularly too. The ambience here was really cosy and relax, the feeling is just like at your own home.
The food quality here definitely meets up to my expectations except those fish meats were quite tough, the rest were mostly good! The satays here were so nice that I kept went back for more! Though the variety is limited but at this promotion price of $19++ per person - The cheapest BBQ Buffet among hotels with quality, what more can we ask for?

Headed over for "loh hei" with colleagues for CNY lunch. Was bitterly dissapointed with everything here.
Firstly, the yee sang was the worst I've had. Dry and tasteless. Secondly the buffet food was below average. They just added two dishes i.e. bah kua, etc and called it a CNY buffet? The food servery area is definitely too small and given it was CNY period, may companies were here for the CNY lunch celebrations. The food was quickly snapped up replenishing was slow; making the servery area perpetually crowded. To make things worst, it was obvious the staff was inadequate to handle such a crowd.

3 things i want to feedback:
1) They have very nice Crabmeat soup & Potato soup here but it was only lukewarm, it turned cold within a few minutes.. Make sure there's a warmer to keep the soup hot enough, otherwise it will affect the taste of the soup.
2) I think the restaurant should get ready by 12pm as they're still arranging the utensils and we need to ask the staff what is this food etc with no food tag until around 12.30pm. This gives guests quite a bad impression...
3) Ice water is chargeable at $2 per pax which everyone find it ridiculous
Semi buffet lunch is only available at Plate from 12.00pm to 2.30pm from Mondays to Fridays.
Semi-Buffet only (without main course): $25++ per person
Semi-Buffet + Chef's Signature Main Course: $30++ per person
For weekends, they only serve Ala-Carte Menu. (No Buffet)
