| Nothing to shout about!
If you are expecting something different from a normal kopitiam, then PU TIEN is not a place worth visiting.
Food: Not many varieties to choice from. we ordered
1) Fried century egg - 5/10 (taste overnight)
2) Cold bitter cucumber - 5/10 (nothing so special)
3) Fried Yam - 6/10 (chef recommendation?)
4) Shark Fin Soup - 7/10 (okay)
5) S&S pork - 7/10 (soft & not too sweet)
6) Steam garlic prawns - 5/10 (overcooked)
7) Garlic Roasted Chicken - 4/10 (prepared hours ago?)
8) 3 eggs Veg with soup - 6/10 (okay)
Overall, the food does not live up to my expectation. |

| Normal and Nothing Fanstatic Here
Was here for lunch as my colleague gave a treat. It was my very time trying XING HUA food in a restaurant and thought it would be an eye-opening experience for me.
At the recommendation of the manager who served us (greeted us when we came in), we ordered the famous fried yam, lychee sweet and sour pork, steamed fish with soup, fried mee and egg. We didn't order the Dong Po Meat as all of us were health conscious and decided to pass it for low fat and chlorestoral.
Generally the food was ok but nothing fantastic. Among all, I think the fried yam stood out, quite crispy and sweet (but not that artificially sweet). Mee was fine but the pork was a bit salty and the soup was bland.
Service wise was a bit slow. Although not crowded, we still have to wait for quite a while before our food were being served. In addition, the waitress who had helped us to distribute the fish, was not professional as she kept on spilling the soup and fish parts on the table and her distribution was uneven, some a lot and some very little. We also waited for quite a while for our bills too.
Think going to other restaurants maybe a better option (as parking is a problem here though they have velvet service). |

| Unfrenly service
We went in; someone greeted us and ask us for number of people. So this waitress which is talking on the mobile phone and pointed towards upstairs. Naturally, we thought she will lead us upstairs so we stood around waiting. Then turn out that she wasnt planning to so we went up ourselves. Find this quite rude. Minimally, you should TALK to that person and request them to go upstairs right?
Went up and got seated at this round table which is placed right next to the wall so means less space. There were 5 of us but that table's size plus the positioning look like its for 4 so dun feel like comfy Feels like eating at coffee shop. Think coffee shop will give me more space.
Throughout the whole meal, felt that all e serving staff are very dao. Only this auntie waitress is quite nice. Will smile when serving food kind. Have e feeling that 1) they look down on us 2) they just want to get us out of e restuarant.
We ordered jellyfish, fried brinjal with floss, toufu, fried yam, roast chicken, sea cucumber, dong po meat, some noodles. Desserts was yam paste and pumpkin paste. Food was decent but setting and service make me quite irritated so most prob wun go again. |

| Very disappointing
Thought I was lucky when I managed to reserved a table in this famed restaurant on a Mother's Day, but I was terribly wrong as I realised soon that they accepted more reservations than they could handle.
A middle-aged slim-built uncle clad in long-sleeved white shirt standing at the reception counter, brushed 5 of us aside, and barked "Come back to us only when your husband is back from car parking. You can only get a table when all 6 of you are present". This is despite having made a reservation ahead. 10 mins later when my husband is back from parking, we were made to wait for another 25 minutes with the small crowd outside the restaurant. No apologies made. Apparently, many in the crowd had also made reservations.
While waiting outside, we were also then told to place our orders and were informed that an ADDITIONAL 10% (on top of the usual service charge and GST) will be charged for ala-carte items (which we were never informed during the phone reservation). We took a 8-course set meal D which costs $268++ for 6 pax, and added another $32++ for substituting the crabs with a 1kg lobster sauteed in garlic.
The starter - lobster platter - is a meagre combination of black moses, cold cuts of duck meat and lobster salad (which looks more like fruit cocktail in mayonnaise); it is simply tasteless. Crab meat is a rare spot, if there's any in the first place, in the "Shark's fin soup with crab meat". The "Crispy chicken" dish was mediocre. The dessert - white mosses with dates - tasted more like plain water. Only the braised sea cucumber, mee-sua and lobster sauted in garlic were nice. Well, at $61/pax, the spread cannot be more disappointing.
For the service we got from the middle-aged slim-built uncle and the young lady speaking Mandarin with a China accent at the reception counter, I would have given a ZERO for service. But on the account of the friendly, thoughtful middle-aged petite auntie and the sweet, attentive young waitress, I struggled to give a 3 for service. |
