After reading so many positive reviews, especially one by FoodieFC whom I esteem, thekaya swiss roll was disappointing. The “cream” was more like a jelly-form. The sponge was soft–yes–but it was nothing compared to the ethereal Japanese cakes. The kaya tasted artificial, which isn't a bad thing; artificial things can be delicious too. This is about expectation management. The cake was alright, not bad in fact, but really nothing mindblowing about it. If the shop were below my block, I’d buy it but I won’t travel all the way to Kampong Glam for the sole purpose of picking up, queuing for the cake.

went to this cakeshop last saturday (17/3) and bought one roll of green-tea roll and one roll of mango roll ... but was GREATLY DISAPPOINTED especially with all the online reviews about how Rich and Good has the "best" swiss rolls in Singapore .... for one thing the green-tea roll uses a type of cream that is not easily digestible even for a young person like me (many hours after eating two pieces of the cake i still have the green tea cream smell in my stomach)... the green tea roll has a v faint green tea taste and the taste of the red bean in the cream is almost non-existence ... the rolls are sooo thin and totally no taste of fluffy as should be the case for swiss rolls .... about appearance .. they were obviously not rolled properly (if you see the side of the roll you will get what i mean) ... all in all Rich and Good obviously does not sell the best swiss rolls in Singapore ... the online comments are very overly rated and may be paid advertisements by them .... im very sure there are many better bakers out there!

    1. E P I think it's subjective. Maybe you got a bad batch. I buy very often and no 1 have complained to me about the cakes...

This is my 2nd time eating the kaya swiss roll from Rich and Good. I really love the kaya swiss roll ($7 for 1 roll) from here. It's soft yet doesnt crumble when cut up into slices. Also, the filling is substantial. I tried the durian ($7 for 1 roll) one as well. The fragrant from the durian one is strong.

Customer service wise.. oh wells. i guess most of the reviews have already commented on the negative service there. Is it so hard to just smile a teeny weeny bit??

    Must tries: kaya roll

People complain about the service or lack of, but I have never had a problem.  I suppose if you are arrogant as many Singaporeans are, you get the same in return.  I try to be nice to everyone and people are usually nice to me.

Anyway, back to this place.  The Swiss Roll is superb.  The texture of the cake, the real cream plus quality fillings ... mmmmmm..   My wife is not a cake person but this one she likes.

Rich & Good Cake Shop is located in Arab Street next to Kampong Glam Conservation Area. This place has gotten quite a lot of positive word of mouth (WOM). Despite its location; at least 15 minutes away from the nearest MRT station (Bugis), this place is packed when I went there twice during lunch time. And its not easy to find this shop if you are not familiar with the area. In case you are wondering, this shop specialises in Swiss rolls

Stacks of unroll Swiss rolls. Yes, they make it themselves and they sell it in a whole roll; uncut.

Wide variety of Swiss rolls and the prices.

Nothing fancy about their packaging. Looks simple and dull.

I ordered  a Kaya Swiss Roll and a Coffee Swiss Roll  for $13.00. The packaging and swiss rolls look simple. But appearances can be deceiving. The swiss rolls were soft and spongy.

The Kaya Swiss Roll which is their best seller. The kaya was tasty, rich and fragrant. This is really a must try. Totally fantastic. The owner say that to keep the cake in the fridge and finish it up by 3 days. Well, it was so delicious that we finish it up within 24 hours.

The Coffee Swiss Roll was quite delicious too. Soft, rich tasting coffee flavoured swiss roll.

If you have not tried this, you will not know what you are missing. They sell lots of other flavours too such  as Blueberry, Chocolate, Durian, Green Tea, Mango, Strawberry and Orange.

Conclusion: This is the best swiss roll I have eaten in Singapore!

Setting - in a little street that's a bit tricky to get to by foot... Quaint and amusing shophouses... nice area...

Service - bad. Woman from the back yelled at me to ask me what I wanted. Gee... I was just there to buy some Swiss rolls - why else am I there?

Value - expensive! But I guess it's the quality... the rolls are thinner in diameter than conventional rolls, but longer in length... and they are so soft!

Food - well... It's fan-friggin-tastic! The chiffon/sponge/cake bit is sooooo super soft! Softest swiss rolls ever! Just amazing. And it doesn't crumble or disintegrate when you cut it. We tried the strawberry flavour and the mango flavour.

The Mango was great! Some chunky mangoes in the middle, just enough cream. Very well-balanced. Perfect! Not too sweet and you don't feel sick from eating it! No artificial taste left in your mouth. Real mango taste made with real mango puree.

The Strawberry was not too great. No real strawberries. Just some jam and cream. Well-balanced but no real strawberry flavour at all. Just a nice pink colour. Not too sweet. Rather bland. Really need to add some strawberries and up the strawberry flavour! But the sponge bit is just as soft as the mango.

Will try the other flavours next time... recommended!

Ji Liu i always buy their swiss rolls, tried all the flavours, personally i like the kaya, durian and green tea/red bean.

They tend to close business around 4-5 everyday. A bit inconvenient for ppl working in the west like me.

    3. Breakfast Tan The Swiss Rolls are nice esp the Kaya and Blueberry ones..EXCEPT the PEOPLE - 1 lady!!! The lady in specs, shoulder length hair with bangs has A SERIOUS ATTITUDE PROBLEM!!!
Being a regular customer who always patronise the shop, thought it would be great to order a birthday cake from them since their swiss rolls are so tasty BUT ended up...with A SERIOUS ATTITUDE PROBLEM lady (main owner's daughter) to serve me!!! SHE WAS EXTREMELY RUDE..by using CAPS here, you all should know what

    4. Eng Ng I have not come across the lady but it's a guy, a big built who has got attitude problem too. I called to check what time they closed. this guy whom i recognised his voice was already nt good in his tone, telling me to reserve as the rolls were selling fast. I reserved as per advised. when i reached the shop, this guy was serving a malay lady who ordered boxes and boxes of swiss rolls. after the lady was gone, my frd came to noe there is also durian flavour, but she did not ask this guy if there is still supply or not. immediately, he responded very rudely that the durian had been sold out. I asked that I was the one who called to make a reservation a while ago,n he simply ignored me and walked towards the back of the shop. Then a lady in his 50s came to serve me politely and asked what i wanted. Seriously, there are already 2 attitude problematic kids in this shop where I will nv patronise this shop ever again. I pay to see atttidue from them? or my money is too cheap to buy the swiss rolls since it was only 3 rolls?

Recommend the Durian flavour swiss roll.

The kaya and chocolate flavours are quite normal.

My friend recommended me to this bakery when we were having lunch at Fika Swedish Cafe & Bistro.

The smell of the durian swiss rolls were soooooooo alluring that I had to buy 1 roll to satisfy my curiosity if this bakery really lives up to its standards.

The lady tending the shop told us that the most popular flavours are Durian, Mango & Kaya. But I bought the Durian & Strawberry instead. Durian Swiss Roll costs $6.50, while Strawberry Swiss Roll costs $6.

The Swiss Roll is very soft and yummy! I think I will go back to try out the other flavours too!

Unlike your typical swiss roll, those sold here are much more traditional, being long and thin (28.5cm long and about 4.5cm wide) The sponge cake is pillowy soft, smooth and dense (in the sense that they're not airy and porous. but they're definitely not heavy!).

Kaya roll ($6.50 each, $12 for two)- The tasty, traditional kaya filling was smooth and coconut-y, and perfectly complemented the sponge layer. This roll is simple but yet delectable!

Durian roll($6.50 each, $12 for two)- This sandwiches some pretty pungent durian-flavored cream and durian pulp! YUM~ Being a durian lover, this durian roll has definitely won my stamp of approval!

Mango roll- Filled with sweet mango cubes and mango cream, this was quite nice as well. This will appeal to fans of mango cake. Tastes best when eaten on the day of purchase!

Strawberry roll- Filled with strawberry jam with occasional strawberry chunks. This was outshone by the rest.

Drop by my blog for more reviews!

Been there once out of a coincidence....Small nice shop selling pastries and not only that, they will innovate some new cookies that will really get hold of you.

Try the biscottis which they have recently started that costs like $13/box. (wonder will there be any price change due to xmas season...) The container itself is a tupperware which will help preserve the freshness of the cookies.

Heard that they have also this almond toast....Looking forward to try it soon...The lady boss is also a very friendly lady that will tell you which items are nice and there are some samples for you to sample.
