Go for the smoked salmon pizza and tiramisu
Dec 7, 2008Bounded by my promise to revisit Parma after a previous favourable experience there a couple of months back, I stepped into this cozy restaurant at the fringe of Serangoon Gardens on a lull Saturday evening with my gf.
Plain white washed walls complete with large squarish mirrors and wooden beams keep the interior simple while soft music plays in the background.
Complimentary Bread - The bread was notably more fragrant this time round but still came across as a tad too dry and flat in taste. I personally would have preferred a more robust taste.
Linguine Marinara - I'm not so much a tomato based pasta person but this dish was decent enough for me to actually consume more then my fair share. The sauce was mildly spicy with a nice smooth tomato overtone while the seafood (prawns, lobster & squid) was very fresh. Overall a rather light yet filling dish.
Smoked Salmon Pizza - The key reason that I was back at Parma - to try out their off the menu, much raved about smoked salmon pizza. Its really not difficult to see why this pizza is a hot favourite. For one, the crust is unlike any other pizza crust that I've come across. The thickness is a cross between the thin crust Italian variant and the thick crust American style pizza. The dough is baked for a short period of time to achieve a homogeneous pale white colour with dashes of brown and more importantly, a nice chewy texture with a slight crunch. Topped with smoked salmon that didn't come across as too fishy in a Hollander sauce base infused with dill, this pizza is definitely worth a return visit.
Tiramisu - I've been a fan of Parma's tiramisu ever since I first tried it and its comforting to know that standards have been maintained, except that portions seem to have increased slightly. The sponge to mascarpone cheese ratio was quite well balanced with a hint of alcohol. No limp sponge fingers from over soaking as well. If one slice isn't enough, there is always the option of a 1kg tiramisu at $48++.
Chocolate Fondant - Although a tad small, the chocolate fondant was asthetically pleasing with a slightly hardened exterior encapsulating thick molten chocolate that oozed out when I made a cut in the crust. Instead of the usual vanilla ice cream alongside, mint ice cream was served, which complemented the chocolate fondant very well in my humble opinion.
Recent price revisions have been made by Parma to offer a better value proposition and our dinner for 2 cost about $100, inclusive of juices. Service is good and food quality is evident, especially in the desserts department. Set lunches are now at $15.90+ and there is a pizza promotion on Tuesday where all pizzas on the menu (except the Grilled Rock Lobster Pizza) go for $12.90++.

Surprisingly good
Mar 8, 2008I finally had the chance to dine at Ristorante De Parma, a small family run Italian restaurant, one wet weekday evening. Strangely enough, although its been around for quite a while and I've always gone past it, I never had the urge to try it out, till that fateful evening.
Quietly located towards the end of a row of shophouses at the fringe of the hustle and bustle of Serangoon Gardens, Ristorante De Parma cuts a contrasting figure to the exuberance of the area. Decor is kept simple and no frills with soft, warm lighting and classy table arrangement. Soft easy listening music wafts through the air, setting the tone right for a relaxing meal.
Complimentary Bread - I presume that each person was only entitled to one slice of bread, seeing that we were only served 2 slices. Though served warm, the bread was a tad too dry for my liking and neither the margarine or olive oil helped.
Funchi Triffolati al Moda Dello Chef ($12.90)- This dish is essentially a Portobello mushroom garnished with grilled bell peppers, sun dried tomatoes & olives with the house dressing. And notice I mentioned a mushroom, not mushrooms. The mushroom was huge, bigger than anything I've ever seen before, which of course doesn't say much because I haven't really seen a lot of mushrooms to begin with. Taste wise, it was juicy with a nice chewy texture to boot, but somehow it lacked the oomph factor. Not that it wasn't nice or anything, just not outstanding.
Calzone aka Folded Pizza ($24.90) - According to the menu, the Calzone is a Neapolitan specialty and means 'Trouser Leg', which honestly makes no sense to me. Introductions aside, I had a major grouse with it. The crust was a little too burnt, resulting in a rather hard exterior, which made slicing or chewing through it a chore. The filling of ham, bacon, onions, mushrooms, capsicums and smoked cheddar cheese was decent though.
Filetto Di Mento ($32.90) - For a change, I ordered my steak medium instead of medium rare this time round and it came as per instructions. Italian restaurants certainly aren't known for their steak so I was pleasantly surprised by the juiciness and texture of the meat as well as the beefy flavours which were complemented by the subtle red wine sauce. I would dare say the steak can give some of the more reputable steakhouses a run for their money. On a side note, the potato ball that came with it tasted weird.
Chocolate Fondant ($11.90) - Beautifully presented, the Chocolate Fondant was compact with a slightly hardened exterior, unlike the ones that many Italian restaurants have taken to doing nowadays. This made eating it all the more enjoyable especially when the molten chocolate started oozing out through a break in the crust. Paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, it was really quite enjoyable. Pity about its small size though.
Tiramisu ($12.90) - High marks in the aesthetics department for the Tiramisu as well. The sponge to mascarpone cheese ratio was quite balanced and it came across as light and fluffy with a lingering taste of alcohol sans the wetness. Its probably one of the more notable tiramisus I've eaten in a long while.
I am most reluctant to admit, but $105 for 1 appetiser, 2 mains and 2 desserts definitely tends towards the expensive side. Food quality is particularly impressive for a restaurant that utilizes only local chefs and service is attentive yet non intrusive. If prices could drop a notch or two, I'll be more than happy to return for dinner. Until then, I'll have to content myself with their seemingly reasonably priced set lunches (starting from $12.90++ I believe).

Desserts desserts desserts
Dec 25, 2008May I just take the opportunity to wish one and all, a very Merry Christmas~!~!
After dinner with the gang at Ah Peng's Teochew Food (they were nice enough to accommodate and come to my area), we adjourned to Ristorante De Parma for their much hyped about tiramisu. Being cautious as always, I had to carve out that I had never tried it before, and all I know are from the reviews I've read on HGW.
We arrived at bout 8+ and wanted a seat for six. Kudos to Ping for immediately trying to arrange something for us. The service was impeccable from the moment we stepped in. They managed to create a table for us in an instant and everything was just so smooth flowing.
Food
We had a Margarita Pizza which was pretty decent. The crust was thin but slightly crispy, didn't really have the dough taste. The topping was all right, but definitely not the best I've tasted. However, having said that, it was pretty nice to have something savoury. It was also very thoughtful of Ping to suggest that we have the pizza first before the desserts so that it wouldn't ruin our tasting experience.
They had free flow of ice lemon tea and I had a refreshing ginger ale. They also had a earl grey tea and I always have a soft spot for restaurants which serve their sugar in lumps. =P
But the real reason I had to give this review, even though there have been so many, is to laud the fantastic tiramisu. Gastronomic orgasm to put it crudely, absolute bliss with each bite. The mascarpone cheese, the liqueur, the sponge was delicately balanced to absolute perfection. The right amount of softness without being mushy, and the lingering taste of sweetness just sweeping through the fibre of your being. Okay, so maybe I exaggerate a little, but it's THAT GOOD. It's presentation is also eye candy, strawberry and a white chocolate roll over the dusted with cocoa tiramisu.. *drools*
Chocolate fondant with gelato deserves an honorable mention in my opinion. Though hard pressed to match it's illustrious other dessert, the fondant manages to hold its own. The molten chocolate oozes out from the lava cake, and paired with the vanilla gelato, almost gives the tiramisu a run for its money. The texture of the sponge with the molten chocolate just gives off such richness and together with the cold gelato, just makes this so delectable. Excellent stuff.
Some mango panacota this was the dessert of the day which was pretty good, but paled in comparison with the other two unfortunately. Supposed to be refreshing but tasted more like a mango pudding. Because taste is all relative, this in my opinion, disappointed a little.
Triple scoop of gelato Sufficiently good quality gelato with three flavours - chocolate, vanilla and mango. Enough said.
Ambience
Ambience was all right. Not a very posh setting but very familial, typical italian really. Furniture is rather vintage and the lightings are nice and warm.
Service
I must commend their staff, with special mention to Ping for being such a good host. We had a thoroughly enjoyable time thanks to the exemplary service by all the staff. The water was constantly refilled, we were never pressured to leave at any point in time. They were always polite, checking with us whether they could make our dining experience any better. Asking for feedback, giving constructive suggestions. Just wonderful. Word of encouragement - Keep it up!!
Value
I'm tempted to say that it's really the best tiramisu that money can buy so it's totally worth it. Quality to Price ratio is definitely very high, but pricing is just ever so slightly dear.
Conclusion
Highly highly recommended. All the reviews below which sing the praises of this restaurant to the heavens are not exaggerating. Superb stuff.Must Tries

Italian food in a nice unpretentious neighbourhood
Sep 12, 2008My boyfriend and I arrived at the restaurant at abt 7pm on a thurs night to be the only couple there but we were quickly joined by another 4 couples dining in as well...
We ordered the seafood soup and cream of mushroom. Both were good, my bf liked the fresh seafood with clear broth but I enjoyed the mushroom soup better!
The parma ham & rocket pizza was really yummy! However, the prawn & asparagus pasta in pomodoro sauce was ordinary (though I would give plus points for the linguine that was done al dente and the juicy prawns that were really fresh)...
The service staffs were very attentive and sweet, as we were celebrating our 7th anniversary there, I requested for a small card to be stuck on the Tiramisu cake which they accomodated and what was really sweet was they've even cut the cake into a heart-shape with 2 slices of heart-shaped strawberries on top.. Awww.... As my bf was planning to make his wedding proposal at the restaurant, they've assisted to make pre-arrangements for us to sit at the window seat and prepared some nice wine for us as well...
I wanted to write this review to encourage the staffs of Ristorante de Parma to keep doing what they're doing now!! Thanks for making the wedding proposal a success for us and keep up the good work! ;)I also recommend this place for

Nice pizza! Wait for the volcano to erupt!
Jan 31, 2010I have the opportunity to dine in this ristorante, Italian for restaurant last Friday evening. I believe this would be the first time I dine in an Italian restaurant. I was checking out any nice, unique pizza restaurant in AMK area and hungrygowhere provide a decent search function of AMK/Serangoon option so that's how I found this place.
Food and Beverage: I didn't expect much what the food will look or taste but I just enjoy the ambience here. Before coming here, I actually have a packet of fried rice because I was so hungry so it helps to save some damage. Lol.
Ambience: We enjoy the ambience in this restaurant. It is cozy and you can see a lot of Caucasians here, they make you feel a little "atas", Malay for superior. The paintings on the wall, the mirrors and the lighting adds on the feel. The only thing is seem like they use mahjong paper on your dining table so that they can replace it easily and the air-con is kinda out of place in the setting. Lol.
Value: I believe the food is fine but I believe it is the overall setting of the restaurant that adds value to what you are paying. I enjoy the ambience and the service more than the food. (Probably due to the fried rice I have earlier :P) Before your dish comes, they actually serve you bread, foccocia which is on the house.
Service: As I mentioned earlier, their service is great. One thing to note that they do take their time to serve you food and get the bill to you even knowing that you are in rush. But they will come in occasionally to ask you how you find the food which is a plus point. Probably they are trained to ensure you have the best quality attention.
Do check out my blog for photo and more about the food!Must Tries

Overpriced Italian food
Jan 31, 2010Four of us went to De Parma for dinner and found the food mediocre and overpriced.
Ambience/Setting: Set towards the tail end of a row of shophouses, it is a ground floor unit with seating for about 30 pax. Kitchen is at the back, Decorations are pretty genuine and fairly comfortable chairs.
Food & Beverages: We ordered a meat lover's pizza, seafood marina, and a tomato pizza. All came piping hot. Thought they were stingy on the cheese and the ingredients, for the price that they charged. For example, the meat lovers had vegetables, rocket salad, I think but only slivers of it, how expensive is rocket salad? Marina linguini was acceptable but the prawns and squid were not fresh. The sauce tasted not freshly prepared.
Value: Items tends to be overpriced, comparative to the prices at Prego, which is a top end Italian restaurant.
Service: Pleasant, friendly and smooth.

De Parma-- Par excellence!!
Oct 21, 2009I have been to De Parma three times. Once with a friend for tiramisu in August 2009, second time with my dog in tow after a walk for pasta and soup, and third time with for Tuesday pizza night (October 2009).
After my three visits, I truly consider De Parma to be one of the magnificent hidden gems of the Serangoon Gardens area. It provides an intimate atmosphere which is amazingly suitable for couples on a date/anniversary, family dinners where children can draw on the table/get a balloon twisted into different shapes, business associates/colleagues/clients, a lone diner who wants a quiet read or a gathering of friends for a meal. The lighting and setting is cosy, comfortable and inviting, particularly relaxing as a reprieve from the hustle and bustle of urban living.
And now, on to the absolutely delectable, scrumptious and heavenly Italian cuisine. It is simply splendid. Discerning diners will notice that De Parma takes the effort to stay true to the authentic roots of Italian cooking. The carbonara is a case in point: they choose to cook it dry like what they do in Italy (according to a friend of mine from Naples, Italy) and not with a creamy sauce like most restaurants outside of Italy do.
Another dish I would highly recommend is the meat lovers pizza! It has the perfect crust which is crispy, thin and very yummy at the same time. The topping is also just the right amount to suit the crust! I used to miss the gourmet pizzas that I was addicted to back when I was in Brisbane for Uni, but the De Parma pizza really exceeds that standard. Much as I liked my Schonell pizza, I never did eat the edge of the crust which tended to be hard, dry and dusted with flour! Very gelat lah! I could, however, eat the whole 10-inch De Parma pizza without feeling gelat at all! Amazing!!
The chocolate fondant is also scrumptious and perfect for someone who loves a rich, authentic chocolate taste. This dessert really hit the spot for me because I love good quality chocolate! While the size of the fondant looks small for its price, it does come with vanilla ice cream which is a perfect complement to melting chocolate of the fondant! Another feature dessert is the tiramisu which is, like the fondant, not too sweet and utterly glorious!
Last but not least, I must mention the amazing wait staff I've encountered at De Parma. They are genuinely warm, attentive, professional and caring every time. I am no food critic or person with a high profile. Yet everytime I've been there, whether dressed in sweaty clothes with a dog in tow or in work clothes, I have been extremely well looked after by the wait staff who go out of their way to accommodate customers! Even my dog was offered water right away without any prompting from me. In fact, I hadn't even thought to ask for that (partly because I am not used to restaurants being pet friendly!). Unbelievable. Perhaps I should nominate them for some GEMS award for service excellence!!
Anyway, there are so many more dishes that I am going to try at De Parma! I have to say that it feels good to support local enterprise!! ROCK ON!Must Tries

Good food... but small portions
Oct 20, 2009Decided to go check this place out for lunch yesterday after the reviews on HGW. My wife had the carbonara, while I decided to try the set lunch.
Carbonara was very good (creamy version). Had a nice light taste which was not too over-powering. Definitely great on the taste buds, especially for people seeking a light lunch. But we found the portions a little too small... then again, maybe because it's lunch time, and they adjusted the portions accordingly :-)
As for the set lunch, I ordered the pasta of the day and felt that the deal could have been more "sincere" as the ham cum pasta dish made the deal look mundane, especially in today's economy where all restaurants offer great deals for lunch - maybe something that the restaurant can think about. Then again... have to clarify that it was only $15.90 for bread, soup, an ILT drink, and a main course.
Overall, a nice experience though, especially when no GST :-)I also recommend this place for

rather disappointing after an hour's wait
Oct 7, 2009We decided to give this place a try last sat, after reading the many fantastic reviews here. However, we were largely disappointed with the food. It definitely did not live up to any of the standards/reviews read on HGW. Here's what we had and my take on the food.
Garlic Bread - 4 slices of baguette with some butter, no garlic taste at all, very bland.
Seafood Soup - again was very bland that we had to ask for salt and sprinkled heaps into it. Had no seafood taste at all. My hubby said it tasted like water with garlic. Wasn't the cheapest at $10+ if I recall correctly, with a couple of seafood in it.
Vongole Pasta - this was extremely disappointing. For $17 (again if i recall correctly), they served it with the small common clams that had absolutely no meat in it. However the worst part was the pasta had loads of hugely sliced garlic and coasely grinded pepper. So much that it numbed my tongue and mouth after finishing it.
Coppa - some pork main dish. This was actually very good. Very tasty and succulent!
As for the service, while the staff was cheerful and polite, we did have to wait for an hour for our mains. Given that it was a Sat nite and they were running on full house, I really do not see why it takes so long to cook pastas and pizzas - which was what most customers were eating. I mean I can whip up pasta at home myself in 15mins so I don't see why a restaurant being professionals, would take an hour. Also, again, I think it's a case of under-staff but we had to ask for ice water and salt about 2-3 times before it was brought to us.
Finally, after an hour we finished our dinner at 9pm. It definitely is not worth the wait and money in my opinion. A meal of the above plus 2 glasses of wine set us back by $95. Honestly for a neighbourhood place and of such standard, I will probably never return again! Simply not worth my time and money!Spent about

blackout binges - 05/10
Oct 6, 2009Decided to visit this place to celebrate the bf's birthday - it was a mini surprise party planned by a few of our friends and myself.
Below is a list of what we ordered for dinner ...
Linguine Marinara ($26.80) - the seafood esp. the prawns and scallops were REALLY fresh. Sauce was spicy enough.
Carbonara ($16.80) - you can order two different versions [dry or creamy] and both my friends chose the latter. Cream was rich enough and very filling.
Penne Al Pollo ($16.80) - its basically a mixture of red tomato and white cream sauce and I thought only my mom cooked spag in this manner via mixing the two. Some may feel its too much or heavy but I'm used to eating pasta this way so I really liked this dish. Its a quaint taste but why not; you get to enjoy the best of both worlds :]
Penne Amatriciana ($15.80) - with parma ham. Sadly, I felt the sauce could have had more 'kick' to it and it was not as spicy as I would have liked it to be so this dish was quite normal and on the safe side.
Smoked Salmon Pizza ($28.80) - this was everybody's favourite dish because we're all fans of smoked salmon. Crust is thin yet not flaky in any way. Really will go back to eat more of this!
Calamari ($15.80) - generally well done, not soggy and crisp enough. It also comes with 2 dips but the portion is quite small for the price.
Tiramisu ($12.90) - its very light and fluffy but slightly on the wet side so it wasn't really my favourite desert as compared to the CHOCOLATE FONDANT [warm lava cake]. Really really good! very rich chocolate - the best warm lava cake i've tasted so far. Not surprisingly, it was everyone's no. 1 desert of the night.
On top of that, we also ordered the creme brulee and a bottle of Chardonnay. The place also has quite a varied wine/beer list e.g. Belgium beer/rose beer and free flow of ICE LEMON TEA for $5++.
Overall, it was a superb dining experience :) The birthday boy even went home with a purple balloon HAHA. You really cannot ask for more when it came to the service - manager (ping) was really helpful. I actually emailed her prior to the dinner. There was also this young waiter (forgot his name!) who arranged the whole desert/birthday cake surprise. The "plan" could not have materialized without his help. THANK YOU!
Will def. be going back soon :]

Lovely Tuesday Pizza Night
Sep 25, 2009We were looking for someone cosy to dine in this week. And uh-huh, i remembered there's a lovely restaurant at Serangoon Garden which raves pretty good reviews at HGW.
The place was cosy, and nicely lit-up with the warm colour light ambience. I was surprised there wasn't much diners but i guess it's probably due to the post holiday blues on Monday. But there's quite a number of regulars there. I guess Ristorante De Parma already have their own group of regular fans who fancy their good quality pasta and pizza at Serangoon Garden!
We had a pretty hard time deciding what shall we have as there's quite a variety of pizza in the menu.
Finally we had 2 Pizza from the Tuesday Pizza Night Menu - Pizza Alfungi and Pizza Meat Lovers (I probably got the name wrongly) but the pizza was lovely. This is probably one of the most decent restaurant in our serangoon-hougang-sengkang area that serves one of the better quality Pizza. The Crust was good, just like what the other diner said, it wasn't neither too thin or thick.
It was quite a good deal to get the Pizzas at $12.90 on Tuesday!!
Besides that, we also had one of the Pasta Penne with Rose Sauce (It's basically Tomato + Cream). It was not bad :) Probably a bit too gelard for some but it was of decent quality!
We ended the night with lovely Tiramisu which was smooth yet not too sweet.
This is definitely one of the very rare place in the North East Area to curb your Pizza(s) Craving and Pasta(s)!!
Will definitely be back again to have a taste on some other stuff =)
Oh! And i forgot to add that i Love Freshly Home Made Garlic Bread! Sometimes, the most easiest dish might be the hardest to make yet the tastiest!
And they serve good chewy soft Calamari!

Good ambiance and food, but will deserve some improvements
Sep 13, 2009Went there on a Saturday night with my boyfriend. Trivia: Discovered the restaurant thanks to the Google Maps proximity function ('restaurants near Lorong Chuan').
Tried to reserve a table, but no one picked up. We decided to go anyway.
The restaurant was full when we arrived (circa 845pm) and we were warned that the food may take longer than usual given the exceptional opulencia.
We decided to give it a try, and ordered the following:
- Bruschetta as a starter, to share
- 4 cheese fettucine and Fettucine bolognese as mains
- Crème brûlée as a desert
- Apple juice and free flow or home brewed ice lemon tea (@5.99).
The food was very long to come but we've been warned, so I won't give any negative point for that (unlike the couple at the nearest table, who threatened to leave the restaurant).
Feedback:
- Bruschetta was nice, a bit too much of garlic, and too loaded with tomato dices, making it inconvenient to eat with hand
- My 4 cheeses fettucine were just average. The pastas were correctly cooked (not al dente though) but the sauce was under expectation. The sauce was not strong at all (shame when it supposed to be composed or gorgonzola), which spoilt the entire dish. Quantity was average.
- My bf's bolognese fettucine were nicer, good balance of meat and tomatoes, and we could taste the red wine in the sauce. Quantity was generous.
- The crème brûlée was nice, and the lemon zest was a good addition. However, the burnt sugar coating should have been hotter (just burnt) and the crème colder.
Overall, I think the food taste can be improved, but the quality is here (it's not too oily and quality ingredients are used).
Service was good, but we had to ask for refill or bread too frequently.

Surprising
Sep 6, 2009Was looking for some decent italian place for dinner and was planning to check out Picotin but awoken from the afternoon nap a little to late. Picotin was full so search HGW for suggestion and was recommended this restaurant. Not wanting to be disappointed had called ahead for reservation and was impressed with some of the reviews written.
However, upon reaching the restaurant, was suprised to find that we were the only ones seated in the restaurant. Spoken to Ping (restaurant owner I think) later and she mentioned that response has been hard to gauge, whereas yesterday was a mad house, tonight was like the total opposite.
Food wise, we (wife and me) had the portobello mushroom, the linguine marinara and the pizza di menzo. All of which were shared.
The mushroom was huge. Very nicely done and although my wife preferred it with some sauce on the side, I like it in this manner which was a bit dry.
The linguine marinara was really fabulous. It was a tad on the spicy side but to be fair, the waiter had inform us of that when we were placing our orders. I would suggest they dial this down a little especially in view that we were already spice lovers. The linguine was really al-dente and yet the marinara sauce was well infused into the linguine. The seafood included int he dish were certainly generous including prawns, slipper lobster, squids and scallops.
The pizza we ordered was a half and half with the pizza di menzo consisting a meaty pizza with beef, ham, pepperoni, bacon and salami and the margherita which included tomatoes, mozarella and basil. The margherita was abit on the plain light pizza while the menzo was certainly meaty. The beef tasted really fragrant and overall was a good balance with the margherita on the other side. There has been a bit written about the crust of the pizza and I have to admit, the crust not the hardest nor thinest but still good enough for me.
Shared the tiramisu and though wife really liked this, I thought it was a bit wet at the base. The flavours was good and strong in this tiramisu too and it was also huge. Definitely fit for sharing.
As a nice surprise, Ping surprised us with a special dessert served on the house. It was a balsamic strawberry with vanilla ice cream. Ping explained that this was like a typical italian desserts which they do to get rid of the excess strawberries in supply. I suppose being a quiet saturday evening, it was a nice touch for their customers. I saw her subsequently offering liquor shots to the other table. This dessert ought to be offered in the menu. The balsamic strawberries contrast very well with the vanilla offering a good balance for the richness of the ice cream.
I have to say, being a first time visitor to the restaurant, irrespective of the reviews prior, I find the Ristorante De Parma a very cosy restaurant, in a small corner of a very crowded Serangoon Garden district. The decor was decent and comfortable with very soft lights. The food though a tad pricey features rich and quality ingredients. This is evident in the tasty grated cheese they offer, not those powdery stuff that other restaurants would.
In summary, this restaurant comes across as being very focus on the quality of food that they serve and I have to say, this is very admirable, notwithstanding the free tasty dessert offered.Must Tries
