Very very v v v... disappointing service.....
Oct 18, 200917th Oct was my BD. As the actual day was a family celebration,
hubby planned to treat me some place posh for high tea 1 day belated on 18th.
After reading many +ve reviews abt Rose Veranda, proposed this place to hubby. Thus he made reservation on 15th.
As the waitress answeing his call stated that 1st slot already fully booked, 2nd slot still has seating at 3.30. I happily accepted that, though I sort of blamed hubby of booking so last min( 3 days in advance maybe is sufficient, but I myself is a Kiasu person). Been a Kiasu person, I'd have made the reservation at least 1 wk before hand. But, its my birthday. Its a 'Birthday gift' from him, doesn't make sense to make the call myself right?
Feeling excited and knowing there's more than 100 types of tea to choose from, 3 hours before our departure, I diligently looked thro all the reviews jotting down which types of tea is nice.(another kiasu part of me :P)
Then took 1+ hr to dress up nicely for a posh cafe, feeling so excited.
We reached there promply at 3.30. I'm very impressed with the waitresses pretty Cheongsam, all with nice smile and grace.
Told the round face Chinese waitress we made a reservation. But she couldn't find my husband's name in the system. Asking my hubby has another name? My slow acting hubby was stunned. Clever me, asking her to check by Hp number, cos they would always ask for contact when making reservation. But, NO. Not in the system!!!
This moment I can't hide my disappointment and anger. I flared up and confronted my hubby(infront of that waitress) whose the waitress that made his reservation. Know what? He forgot to ask, saying cos he never expect anything will go wrong.(cos its a 5 star hotel u know)
Know what? That waitress didn't even attempt to apologise. She simply just show us 2 seating near entrance, saying that 'It's ok even no reservation, juz nice we have a extra table)
Sound as if we're two walk in customers trying to cheat seatings by faking reservation!!
Looking at those empty window seats, I told her i'd prefer nicer seating. Hinting us without reservation, thats the best she can do for us(giving us the table near entrance)
Seeing my black face, still no apology.
My nice temper hubby urged me to sit down. Another waitress passed us the tea menu, I purposely dumped it on the table without looking. The waitress can't bother to find out why, only hurriedly flee off(to avoid troble i guess).
My mood totally spoilt, no mood to eat liao. I demand hubby to show proof to them we did make reservation, in order to stop them giving us the BoChap attitude. And also to return us justice, we did make reservation!! (Not those faking walk in customers!)
After saying that, i walked fiercely out of the cafe all the way to the lobby and hubby chased after me. Those waitresses juz looked blankly at our direction, no one bother to find out why. The round face waitress should know, but she doesn't bother.
After some mental struggle, hubby went back, showed them his hp call-out records, showing proof that he did call on 15th.
Only when we did untill this extent, then they apologised, offer to give us a better seating.
But sorry, when mood is spoilt, not posssible to recover within mins.
We simply walked away. And the 30min parking cost $6(But this a small issue compared to our lousy experience)
Sorry for the long winded story.
In short, my disappointmwnt can be summarised as below points.
1) 5 star hotel shouldn't make this kind of mistake!(Or maybe its only me thats damn unfortunate? When customers made reservation, its not recorded down, and no way to trace back!
Some cheapo Zi Char might be able to do better than that. I did make reservation with some popular Zhi Char stalls before, no mistakes ever so far.
2) No apology given all the way. I don't expect discount, since my hubby not a stingy person. Just expected a simple, sincere apologic smile and words of 'We're sorry'.
Maybe its their 5 star status not to bring down themselves?
3)When I black face, throw tantrums at my hubby(poor hubby). That waitress simply act blur. All I wanted is a word of apology! If she overheard our conversation, she should know.
I've frequented many 4, 5 stars hotel restaurants and cafes. Some very rare times they did miss out reservation. But, they will show apologies and sincerity which always successfully bring down my 'fire'
But, not for Rose Veranda. Service reaaly doesn't live up to a 5 star hotel........

Eat til you drop
May 18, 2007This was my first time to the Rose Veranda, and probably won't be my last!
As you first step into the tranquil dining area, you are ushered to luxurious sofas that are so comfortable that you could possibly fall asleep after your meal. The view of the hotel's lush landscape similarly soothes the mind in preparation for the mind-spinning buffet spread. As buffets usually go, the Rose Veranda's selection may not be as mind-boggling as other more lavish spreads. But where the establishment lacks in over-the-top variety, it makes up for it by the exceptional quality of the food.
The salad section boasts a fresh variety of salads, from the usual Caesar's salad to a crunchy mix of greens that include some of the yummiest arugula (rucola/rocket) I've tasted so far in Singapore. Freshly grated parmesan, as well as the usual suspects of salad dressings are tasty and appetising.
As this is an afternoon tea spread, there aren't many warm dishes, and in place of that there are finger sandwiches galore, as well as some Asian fare such as mee siam, Vietnamese spring rolls and a generous variety of breads. The finger sandwiches were plain to the eye (just lettuce and cheese), but the taste was just simply addictive. The bread was baked with rosemary, and had a fine taste to it. Under the warm hood, one can find succulent chicken, fish dishes with a savoury gravy, grilled vegetables with large, pleasant mushrooms, and green curry! The green curry was exceptional, I thought - the chefs had the moral courage to make the curry spicy enough to give one a kick, and not at all 'diluted' like how other 'international' buffets go.
The Japanese table -- a smallish table it was -- had a few sushi types that were a little boring, but nonetheless tasty. The rice had the right mix of lemon (or is it vinegar) that proper sushi should have. The salmon sashimi was fresh and soft and practically melted in my mouth. I kept going back for more!
The desserts were superb. What to say? The chocolate-green tea cake (no, it's not a cake, strictly speaking. However, I forget the proper name for the dessert...) was FANTASTIC! As all chocolate desserts are, it simply tasted decadent and was supremely rich. In fact, one should save that for the final crowning glory! The scones were yummy, with the hotel's own 'home'-made jams (rose-strawberry and something else with apricot), fresh cream was available, as was butter. There were pastries galore, and a huge spread of fresh strawberries coated with chocolate, or just strawberries naked on their own, waiting for you to drizzle cream or chocolate or sugar on them.
As for the beverages, the Rose Veranda is probably better known for their 101 Teas menu. The waitress places it before you when you first take your seat, and you are at liberty to order as many pots of exotic teas as you like. The tea is served in rather exquisite Wedgewood pots, as I'm told. Very impressive indeed. I had the Rooibos with Vanilla - which was super fragrant and most excellent. I'm hooked on it.
We went at about 2pm and stayed until 6, with our stomachs bursting but absolutely happy. That was lunch and dinner for me. They start at 12pm and go all the way until 6pm, and won't rush you even if you've stayed beyond 6pm - which is fabulous.
Note: Reservations are required as it's a popular place (especially with tai-tais!)Must Tries

Nice ambience but somewhat disappointed...
Nov 30, 2008Before I start commenting, I need to digress to give a "full" picture. During my consideration of high tea venues, I noted that Goodwood Park L'Espresso and Rose Veranda have pretty good ratings. Based on the higher rating of L'Espresso (>8), I decided to make that place my first choice of visit last week. I wasn't disappointed and you can read my comments of L'Espresso. This week however, I had the opportunity of visiting Rose Veranda and was looking forward to it, in view of the much raved about 102 teas selection.
Perhaps due to the recent wonderful time at Goodwood's L'Espresso and other binges, I felt that the variety at Rose Veranda does pale in comparison to L'Espresso. Further, I quite agree with the rating of 7+ for Rose Veranda vs the 8+ rating of L'Espresso.
Ok, now back to my comments on the international buffet at Rose Veranda.
I must say that the ambience is great, with spacious sitting area and comfortable sofas and chairs.
There is such a great variety of teas that my friends and I sure took a while to decide. During the 3.5 hours we were there, the 3 of us had a total of 11 pots of teas(!), including Darjeeling Earl Grey, Splendid Earl Grey, Silver Pi Lo Chun, Darjeeling Pearls, Carribean Summer, Morocco Mint, Irish Whiskey Cream, Shangri La, etc. I must say I was pretty disappointed with the Earl Greys as they tasted too light and nondescript, absolutely unlike the Earl Greys I've drunk. On the other hand, my friend found Summer Carribean too fruity for her taste while Silver Pi Lo Chun was too "plain". Morocco Mint smelt like Wriggley's Spearmint Chewing Gum and my friend felt as if she's drinking Colgate. Then again, I guess it's really an individual's taste as I do like the smell and taste of Morocco Mint. Of all the teas I drank at Rose Veranda, I enjoyed Irish Whiskey Cream most, though my friends refused to try as they felt its description to be unappetizing.
As for the savoury stuff, I didn't try all that were there. For those I tried (e.g. chicken drumsticks, beef, fish, mutton), I could only say that they were either simply ok or disappointing. Most certainly, they didn't appeal to my palate. My favourites were the siew mai and "har gau" (prawn dumpling), which I had three helpings. My friend felt the mutton tastes all right but a tad too dry/tough when it should simply melt in the mouth. Another loves the salad/greens served.
Dessert wise, majority of the cakes are good but not fantastic enough to make me go back for seconds. As usual, there's a chocolate fondue with fruits and marshmallows. For the desserts served in plates or glasses, they are likewise ok to nondescript (at least for those I took, which are mainly yellow and fruit based). In all, my friend and I generally like the "brown" desserts, which either contain chocolate, hazelnut or mocha/coffee. As for the plain and raisin scones, I much prefer the ones served at L'Espresso.
I guess it's really a matter of taste and in the case of Rose Veranda, half of those I sampled simply didn't appeal to me.
Perhaps one of these days, I'll try its English afternoon tea before I finalise my views of this place...I also recommend this place for

Hi Tea Experience
Dec 20, 2009I have went to Shangri-La, The Line for a couple of times, but I never know that there is another fantastic place right above it!
I must say, I prefer Rose Veranda over The Line. Dun get me wrong, The Line is still good for its wide spread of fresh seafood, meats, dim sum, salad, desserts and many more. I will still go to The Line if I feel like pigging out like nobody business and when I get my paycheck. Coz, it isnt very cheap...haha
On the other hand, Rose Veranda offers a much classy ambience with comfortable armchairs and a less crowdy setting, yet with a reasonable spread. It offers more of hi tea spread with a choice of 120 teas. Definitely great for gals gathering, whereby you can chit chat over cups of tea with nice savories and desserts. You can just eat leisurely (Weekday Hi Tea from 11.30 - 6pm) without the need to "choke" yourself with food.

It's the tea than the high tea buffet!
Dec 14, 2009At the Rose Veranda, the highlight was the list of 102 teas; black, red, green, white, herbal, infusion .... you name it. Among the list were premium teas that was blended exclusively by Hediard for Rose Veranda. These blends require an extra top up of S$8 on top of the High Tea buffet cost (S$40++).
Apart from the Strawberry Garden (strong strawberry infusion, distinctly red), we had the Sencha Vanilla (refreshing vanilla tea), Assam Mokalbarie (flowery and spicy) and Mogentau (unique mix of sencha, sunflower, cornflower and rose petals). Some flowery, some fruity and others, spicy and wel loved them all.
I was more impressed with the teas rather than the high tea buffet. The international high tea buffet spread was mundane, nothing distinct except for the following dishes that I thought was pretty good.

This rose stinks
Dec 12, 2009Went back for the first time since the renovation. No more sashimi/sushi or roast duck/pork/ham. Now, more hot dishes. I don't want the bad dinner you find at a wake, I want tea. Plus, serving utensils and dishes were dirty--from neglect. Stray bits of sauce and crumbs everywhere. And the service is the worst. Attitude plus incompetence. I'm finding the Shang just doesn't provide that top level of service (at the Line as well). Too bad, it's a pretty spot. -
Tea Haven
Dec 10, 2009102 types of tea - that's the selling point of Rose Veranda.
You take your pick and have it served to you in fancy Wedgewood teapots and teacups. I chose Red Roses, a mix of black tea with rose petals and jasmine. You'll catch whiffs of the light fragrance of the Jasmine once the tea is poured and the sweetness of the Rose will stay on your palate long after you sip the tea. I had my tea plain, no sugar and (of course not) milk, and I finished the entire pot. Pick the right tea for your taste preferences here and Gardenia's tagline of "so good you can even have it on its own" will apply. (:
Now, when you go to a buffet, you expect to see lots of food, not necessarily all of great quality, and such was the case here. So instead of describing everything, I'll just share what I thought was good for the benefit of those who are making a trip down. (:
On the savory side of things, I really enjoyed all the fishes they had to offer. The oven baked salmon with yoghurt was really fresh and flaked easily with a few prods of my fork; the fish with seasoned vegetables went really well with the cream sauce it was prepared in and the roasted veggies were amazingly sweet. The whole snapper was housed in this covered metal stand in the middle of nowhere hence went undetected by most patrons, but I discovered it and asked for a portion - the fish was tasty with a nice pesto (?) topping and creamy sauce, pity it was a little hard and cold after all that sitting around. The salmon sashimi was fresh and thickly sliced while the soba was presented with really really succulent prawns. A pity though, that the soba was not served chilled and there was no sauce to go with it; when I asked for some, I was given some warm, sweet sauce - weird. The sandwiches were simple yet tasty and the self-tossed Caesar salad was decent too. The pandan-kaya pau looked a suspicious green but nice, soft and fluffy. A tip if you're keen to try the Dim Sum: grab it from the second bamboo-tray layer as those on top tend to be a little hard from all the opening of the lid.
The highlights of the desserts for me? Scones, bread&butter pudding and the truffles. The scones were buttery, warm and served with cream and jam . The bread&butter pudding was very fragrant with a vanilla sauce that went really well with the custard-y insides, sooo good. The truffles look pretty average but bite into the truffle and you'll enjoy an exciting surprise of a chocolate-ganache explosion in your mouth. Aside from this tiramisu-like chocolate dessert, which I'd advise you to steer clear of, the rest of the desserts were didn't leave much of an impression on me.
On average, the quality of the food at Rose Veranda is ok - but their inability to keep food warm/cold the way it's meant to be presented lowers the food quality a lot. If they could just work on that, the spread would be MUCH better. (:
When the bill came, I was a little surprised as I was expecting to be charged 36++ per pax after reading a few food reviews. But I was told that they recently increased the usual rate to 38++ and again to 40++ for festive periods! I was a little miffed that no one informed me of such when I was making reservations but considering I managed to hunt down a 38% discount through Shangri-La's 38th Anniversary site, I still left a rather happy girl.
If I were to return to Rose Veranda, it'll be for an unhurried afternoon with my girlfriends/mother/sister. I'll ignore the rest of the buffet, and just have some scones and bread&butter pudding to go with a pot of tea or two. (:Must Tries

Money can be better spent elsewhere....
Dec 4, 2009Its been a while since I last visited Rose Veranda and I thought maybe its time to go back there again despite being advised by some friends not too.. but the tempations of their scones are just too irresistable!!
I was told the place went through a renovation but it somehow seems the same to me... the ambience is still very relaxing and cozy. The food was the big change!!! Instead of the dainty and pretty sandwiches, cakes, pastries and some light snacks, it was replaced by heavy dishes such as lamb curry, vegetarian curry and more curries... It was a total turn off!! I am a curry lover, but that was way too many curry dishes. I wonder what happened to the menu planning for today.
Anyway another surprise came along when we found a strand of long hair in the one of the beef rendang dish. We informed the manager about it in a very nice manner and apology was given.
I seriously do not want to write about the food, as nothing is impressive. The spread is not well planned at all. The desserts were disappointing, especially their specialty- scones. They have totally lost it!
What really upset me most was that the service recovery carried out. I think they can do better than just apologising. I came from service industry and took such matters with critical care. If my diners, were to find hair in my food, i would def do more than just a simple sorry. I start to wonder if the manager has took us for granted bcos the complaint was conveyed in a very diplomatic manner. Do I have to appear to be very angry and disappointed to get the service I deserved?Just because I am smiling doesnt mean that I am happy with the whole experience becos finding hair in my food is not exciting in any way!
My fond memories of Rose Veranda eventually was screwed this time... Never going back and will not recommend anyone there as well.Must Tries

Tea and tea only.
Oct 18, 2009Perhaps I'm really not much of a buffet person these days (cliché! guilty as charged), and my maiden visit to Rose Veranda has definitely drummed that in.
Save for the fairly nice desserts, most of the spread was the usual mediocre buffet standard - a smattering selection of "international" food of substandard quality - sushi that's been sitting there for a while, some cold cuts and heated meats and dried dim sum (as a previous reviewer has mentioned) and the obligatory subpar version of a local dish (it was prawn mee when I was there).
The high-tea buffet hours are from 11-6pm and I was there around 2pm, so perhaps that explains the less than fresh quality of the food? Because they have been sitting around for a while, perhaps it taste better at 11am? Perhaps, the spread is better on a weekend?
Or perhaps I missed out entirely on the concept of Rose Veranda. That it's not about the food per se, silly, it's about the pleasant hotel ambience, the prompt, polite service, the cushy chairs and the tea. Oh yes, the tea, the tea, the tea. All 102 types of them (mostly by Ronnefeldt)and it seems like you can keep on trying as many varieties as your bladder will allow you to.
So, if you don't mind the substandard food, Rose is actually a pretty relaxing place to have a tête a tête, with a friend, or a coterie of them. You sip fine teas in pleasant environs and peck on dessert and the occasional finger sandwiches and cold cuts.
Currently the Rose serves only strictly buffet, at $36++. But if you loathe having to sit through the mediocre buffet, but are adamant about drinking tea there, it's $13.50 per pot of tea (which you don't get to change flavours later and you probably can't order some lite bites ala carte), so in that aspect, perhaps, it's worth paying $36 for the buffet, just so it's more economical should you wish to try 3 or more types of tea and you get to pick on the desserts. A handy UOB 15% discount doesn't hurt either. The Pai Mu Tan with melon and the Equilibrium teas were delicious btw.Must Tries

Yes, standard has dropped
Jul 31, 2009I was back again for tea (now officially known as lunch to them but it's back to 12-6pm seating for weekdays) to see if the dip in standard was a one-off.
It is clear that this place is trying to trim their budget.
The number of food items has definitely been reduced. The focus is now slightly more Asian rather than Western even though I was there on a Mediterranean themed day. The soup was so salty it's not for consumption. Some of the tapas was a let down. You can tell the food did not taste as refined as previously. Think they should quickly replace the chef.
There are more desserts now compared to prior renovation which of course is a good thing as their desserts taste the same whether you eat it at The Line, Rose Veranda or The Line Shop.
Service has improved overall though the waitress who led me to my seat took her time to come back to me to check if I needed a menu.
I noticed that for the past 2 rounds that I visited, it seems that the usual Caucasian and Japanese tai-tais are not filling up the seats unlike previously. This place is trying to refocus but I think they have got the formula wrong. Why fix something that ain't broken?I also recommend this place for

Should remain the same
Jul 18, 2009Chihuly (Ritz)- like it for the service and exotic dessert flavours.
L'Espresso (Goodwood) - like it for being right by the pool and a colonial feel.
Rose Veranda (Shangri-La) - Like it for having the best overall feel for tea.
I like to have a nice tea-time and my all-time favourite remains Rose. This place is not similar to those local high-tea places so don't expect chicken wings, laksa and the likes (though they do have a small selection of local food to satisfy the curious foreign tai-tais). I like this place because it really is a place for you to wind down (read: not pig-out though it does have more varieties than Chihuly). It has the perfect balance between varieties and an English tea ambience.
What I don't like:
The renovated Rose. As I've been here several times before, I am able to tell the slight drop in some of the food quality after the renovation. I'm unhappy about the replaced Wedgewoods. The new tea-sets do not blend in with the place as nicely as the former. Am unhappy about the scratched and worn tables not replaced. Unhappy that they have done away with their 12-6pm concept and replaced with lunch followed by tiered tea.
I've yet to make it to St Regis but at the moment Rose still remains as my favourite place for tea.I also recommend this place for

Approaching Tai Tai Haven
May 12, 2009Located at the second floor of Shangri-La, my colleagues ended up here to celebrate a birthday. We had wanted to do Summer Palace in conjunction with the "flash your age" promotion but as it was filled (for a Monday lunch), we were told that there was only availability in Rose Veranda.
The setting is a lavish intricately designed chairs with a nice hi-tea setting, and the food was what would expect at for hi-tea which is not surprising given the name of the place.
Seated down I started with the salmon sashimi which was alright. However, I would avoid the rest of the sushi as it looked like it had been seating there quite patiently for awhile. The clam sushi was a little gooey, case in point.
I did enjoy the grilled chicken and the roast beef. Unfortunately, the staff that was carving the beef was not to be found the majority of the time, so one had to patiently await for her arrival.
I did not fancy the dim sum items as they tended to be on the dry side, and the sandwiches were nothing much to shout about. So while I was trying to figure out what else to consume, I overheard a shriek.
Wondering what happened, my curiosity was quickly satisfied when the young lady beside me apologised for her over-excitement on seeing the dessert spread. It was at this moment of enlightenment that I realised what the majority of the crowd here was for.
I should have known better, as it has been awhile since I have dined at a setting in which I am one of the only two tables in the whole place with male presence.
Down to the dessert spread, I must say that I was impressed by the variety, which includes tiramisu, durian cake, fruit cake, macaroons, custard and much more.
