    "Got Food?"
  1. IS IT EVEN EDIBLE?

    Oct 11, 2007
went to sakae as my friends wanted to eat japanese and sushi, i reluctantly went to sakae sushi as the other choice was suki sushi which is juz as bad...

rice that is too much and dry and sticks together at the same time.
toppings that are of dubious nature.
they should pay me to eat trash.
ppl who go sakae are trash eaters.. nuff said..

all of us were cursing throughout that it is not even edible.

*actual score should be absolute zero.

My friends and I went to this Sakae outlet, after hearing that it is one of the bigger outlet with a better ambience.

When we stepped in there though, we found that decor-wise, it was similar to the othre Sakae outlets.

The first thing which irked us was when the waitress brought us to our table. The computer which was used to order food was down, while the others on the neighbouring empty tables were still operating. Why did she have to choose this table for us then?

The food was just so-so, a little worse than the other outlets too I must say in fact. The service was inattentive and slow, but it was not till we were about to leave that we realised how much the service sucked.

As we were having the buffet, we were already quite full when we were leaving. However, when the waitress came over to give us our bill, she saw that we had 2 more pieces of sushi left, and demanded (yes, demanded, not request politely) that we finish them all up.

Not only that, she stayed there and stared at us to make sure that we finish our food.

Pissed, we put the food into our mouth, chewed it, and spat it into the soup bowl and covered it when another table called for her attention.

I know it's really quite disgusting to do that, but we were really too full, and with the service this atrocious, well, I don't really care that they will have a harder and more awful time cleaning the dishes.

      • Crowded at 4pm?

        Aug 3, 2007
A friend of mine who was in Singapore for a day decided to have his fix of green tea before leaving the country and hence we ended up catching up in Sakae Sushi.

Good eateries are usually crowded at mealtimes but the surprising thing was this place was filled with students and foreigners on a Thursday afternoon. After some looking around, I figured that the students were there for the sushi buffett while the tourists looked like they were having afternoon tea. Even though I had just eaten lunch at another conveyor belt sushi restaurant about two hours ago, my greed overtook me and I started snatching sushi from the conveyor belt. I told myself, just one plate but the moment I started with my first plate of spicy salmon sushi I ended up with four more plates of the same dish. So much for the discipline.

The sushi was a little warm but I guess that must have been caused by the heat coming from the conveyor belt. The spicy salmon sushi though was addictive and I'll be back for more.

      1. Not bad!

        Mar 16, 2010

I love japanese food! Salmon & beef are one of my fav things to have! Went to wheelock sakae sushi a while back. I especially love the wheelock outlet because it's not very crowded and the interior is pretty. One flaw of this outlet I must say is that the staff are slow to attend to you. Maybe it is because of the layout of the place, sometimes the staff cannot see you if you sit right at the back area. But this place is definitely value for money!

I like the old school coke bottles (in pix)! Classic! ha ha For the salmon don, I like the fish egg, but the salmon isn't that fresh. Taste a bit like the cold storage type. But i guess for that price i shouldn't complain! The beef is not bad. I like it a lot b'cos u decide on ur own tenderness like if you like your beef raw, can just not cook it, or if u like it well done, can just cook it for as long as you like :)

Ate the various sushi and handrolls. Pretty cheap, handrolls, think it's 2.99 for one or something along those lines? Ate so much that day!

Nice place to chill out w friends!

      2. Buffet is good if you have a big appetite

        Jan 12, 2010
My friend and I arrived at around 2:30pm and discovered the sushi buffet would start an hour later, so we starved it out as it was definitely more worth it to pay a flat rate and eat all you want, rather than pay for the a-l-a cart-e items off the menu individually. Service was awful. The hostess did not know what promotions there were and had to get her supervisor to explain to us what were the items on the menu that were part of the buffet. And they took more than an hour to serve us, cold peas........ when fried bean curd and steamed egg and fried tofu came in about 10 minutes after placing our orders. My friend asked the server and he kept saying "it's coming, it's coming", 5 times before it finally arrived. Staff kept barking at us to hurry up with our orders from the menu too. The sushi off the conveyor belt was decent, considering it's a buffet, not extremely fresh and not terribly awful. We had a bowl of udon each and soup and probably lots of salmon and prawn sushi off the belt. Handrolls were decent- soft shell, California, Don't remember what else was consumed as the both of us got extremely stuffed up. As for the complimentary ice cream- it looked like glutinous ice cream, sticky/chewy, they only had peach flavor, out of the 4 different flavors listed on the menu. Shame, cause we wanted to try the lychee and sesame flavors in particular. Service was dumb, in general. And rude. The cashier was a student who seemed to be falling asleep and asked my friend "have you paid yet" as we walked out, right after paying........what nerve! Oh, and the place was full of students in uniform who kept complaining about the price, though they paid slightly less than I did (even as I'm still a student, but over the age). And a table of 16 year olds not in uniform who dressed like they were going to Orchard Towers, literally... patrons were talking loudly constantly, like a fishmarket.

I am a fan of Jap food. There are soooo many choices around, but Sakae offers a good varity at reasonable prices. There are also many outlets and you can easily get to one. Well, the sushi standard may not be outstanding but its a good place to dine after work. Say Jap and people will tell you sake sushi!

          • Battle Of The Sushis : Sunshine Maki Versus Dragon Roll

            Sep 21, 2009
I celebrated Dad’s birthday today with the family in a colourful lunch at Sakae Sushi located in the bustling city of Orchard at Wheelock Place. We arrived early at 1130 when the doors of the restaurant just opened. As many may know, Sakae Sushi holds a strong reputation as a Sushi buffet where you can literally stuff you face at affordable prices. But I was to discover that beyond that door of buffets and coloured plates, actually lie a casual yet delicious menu that hark the beauty of Japanese cuisine.

Out of all the dishes I savoured today, I typically enjoyed the Sunshine Maki the most. A creation of the restaurant chain, it tastes almost as good as it looks. Simply vibrant with a yellow hue that aims to lift a smile on the face. It was a little sweet because of the thinly sliced mango that wraps around the rice. And the “drops” of salmon eggs on each piece gives a good burst of salty sea flavour coupled together with the crispy tempura prawn that leaves a delightful crunch.

This was something new for me – Unagi Tofu. While I have tried Agedashi tofu, Fried tofu, and just plain ol’ tofu, Unagi tofu was an eyeopener to me. Not only was it presented very beautifully, true to the zen style of the Japanese, it was very soft all around. The combination of eel and tofu is such a good pair that I wonder why I have not tried this before. The light simmer in a thin savoury sauce just gave burst to a flurry of flavours that leaves one feeling warm all over.

          • Why the low rating

            Apr 14, 2009
I do not understand the low ratings that others have but I love this place! I think Sakae Sushi at Wheelock has not let me down compared to its other outlets.

Food is fresh, service is good and even when the pc was down, it didn't damper my mood.

Sorry folks, I ordered too much to remember but I must say the sashimi, the bbq stuff, the cooked the raw are so good. I can in hungry but left hungry too...hungry for the next trip :)

              Mar 26, 2009
Well for sushi the best or better sushis are definitely from sushi tei paragon but they don't have the buffet.

Went with the others who love japanese food to eat and the service wise is like non existent? Since it was more of taking from the train itself. For hot food the quantity and quality was inconsistent sometimes cold sometimes hot or warm and always in different amounts?

                Aug 12, 2008
my friends and i were looking for a place to eat, cant decide where and what to eat...we rounded almost the whole orchard road and cant find a place to settle down and eat so one of my friends suggested going to wheellock place sakae sushi to settle it once and for all....it was quite late in the evening, our turn came pretty fast as there was not much people...the moment we sat down, the com's down and the sushi belt is moving but very few sashimi and sushi..we decided to order all the sushi and all the food from the menu....we waited for about 10mins for our green tea packets to serve, that was slow but the food came faster, about 20mins...pretty good...

the chicken was tasty and sweet, the sashimi salmon and tuna was ok,katsu curry rice was good actually overall is ok.my friends and i tried not to get food from the sushi belt.

surprisingly, the last time i ate here was much much more better than now.i would still prefer bugis sakae sushi its bigger and the food is much better and value for money...

                  Jul 14, 2008
haha.. Today I went to Sakae Sushi ( wheelock place) with my sis.. frankly, I am abit disappointed about it, because it is not as good as what I thought.. the sushi is around 2.30 dollar ++ a plate .. as compared to nihon mura( japanese village) .. 99 cents per plate.. hmm I feel it is quite ex la.. so didnt order much.. only 7 plates for 3 of us... the quality of sushi is better than japanese village for some of the choice..haha... :) haha.. cuz my sis has 20 dollar gift voucher ma... so total is 43 dollar... we save 20 dollar..so only per person 7 dollar plus ba..haha... but for other type of sushi I still prefer jap village de ba..haha..

We order the terriyaki don.. the chicken is quite tender... sauce is not bad too... alot of chicken..but the rice very small bowl, so we order 1 more bowl of rice , to share among three of us... ( haha..cuz my small sis is a small eater)..haha... then we order the yakitoki ( not sure how to spell..grill chicken..) only 3 stick cost 6 dollar +++ I think.. and I think tori Q is even better than that ba.. so not fantastic at all..haha...

" sakae soft shell crab sushi not bad.. I love that!"

We spend around 13 dollar ( without the voucher)... abit ex because the quantity of food we had is quite limited..haha... so if you all wan to try cheaper and wider variety jap food and sushi , i recommend you go try Nihon Mura ( jap village.. at The Cathay basement gt one too..haha).. but my sis say that it must depend on luck de..cuz thier standard of food is inconsistent... haha..but luckily the few times I went with my poly click is not bad and worth the try!

toppings that are of dubious nature.
they should pay me to eat trash.
ppl who go sakae are trash eaters.. nuff said..

all of us were cursing throughout that it is not even edible.

*actual score should be absolute zero.
