My favourite weekend hangout spot
Discovered Scrumptious! based on the Top 10 Hidden Finds list on the HGW mainpage and well chuffed about this find.
Scrumptious has become my favourite hangout place during the weekends. A gem like this place really stands out in a place as scruffy as Turf City which has developed into a real activity hub of sorts for adults and kids. For one, the cafe is the perfect place for families / parents to lounge around while waiting for their kids parked at the nearby activity classes. On any given day you’ll find families and parents lounging around, waiting for their kids finishing up their taekwondo/art/etc classes. Just last Saturday I had a great time listening in on the (free) story telling session which the cafe organized (sessions at 1pm, 2 pm and 3pm - not sure if its on a weekly basis though). Even with a strong family attendance, I never feel overwhelmed or out of place like I do in a place like Globetrotters for example.
Cannot agree more on the excellent coffee which Scrumptious serves - I dare say this place is now top on my list in terms of a good cuppa. Using Grinders, their milk based coffees (lattes, cappucinos etc) are extremely well executed - bravo to them (check out the restuarant photos posted by HGW). I usually order the burger, Scrumptious fry up or a pasta dish whenever I am there. All competent, and the emphasis is definitely on fresh ingredients. I’m not a big muffin fan but after trying out their muffins I am a convert. One should definitely check out their first-rate muffins - no essence, all fresh fruit - their banana and blackberry ones are real winners in my books. Also like their waffles.
I love how I can get my bi-weekly mani/pedi done there (comes with a free cuppa too!) while the boyfriend enjoys his brunch / cuppa while surfing the internet or while reading the papers in the main cafe area. That way, everyone is happy. The mani/pedi area is at the back of the cafe which boasts a great view of the greenery outside (how many nail salons can boast such a relaxing view?!) plus the cafe is well-stocked with the latest magazines and journals. The nail area sits just two so you get a great relaxing experience very unlike what you will find in one of the chain nail bars. Yummy Mummies should defintiely take note!
With the competent homemade food, excellent coffee, easy and relaxed feel, I am well pleased with this find. With ample parking as well, this place just makes the perfect weekend chillout joint.

There isn't much wrong, but nothing extraordinary either
This cafe is few doors away from my workplace, so I've dined here a few times. Within its confines is also a manicure corner and a kids' area whose harsh lighting sits at odds with the rest of the interior. Promotions are listed on chalkboards and mirrors around the place and there are magazines for browsing.
On to the food now, which I think is a tad pricey. There are no extra charges though. The omelette (~$13) is alright; it's not watery, salty, stale, but it's not particularly outstanding either. It comes with toast and mushrooms.
The vegetarian lasagne (~$14) is weak on flavours other than the cheese and pasta, but it's to be expected when there's no tomato base. It's stuffed with zucchini, mushrooms and spinach. Rocket salad on the side never fails to brighten my day though.
You can opt to have your sandwiches made with ciabatta or brown bread. The mozarella $ mushroom variant ($9) comes stuffed with spinach, and the taste of the mushrooms is much stronger than the hot cheese. Crisps are served on the side, and they are the supermarket variety.
They have several flavours of New Zealand Natural ice-cream available, but as for desserts, the banoffee pudding (which I was surprised to find and looking forward to trying) was a letdown. It calls to mind a microwaved (but moist) banana cake swimming in toffee sauce and topped with ice-cream...not quite the concoction, copied to death from The Hungry Monk, I recall it to be. If you ever need a sugar rush though, it's all yours for $7.50.
I'll still return to this place when I want some variety. Service is still attentive and helpful, and food got to me quickly enough. It feels rather generic, however, like lots of mid-priced cafes that dot the island. At least it doesn't seem pretentious, and serves honest fayre. Hold back your expectations, and you won't likely walk away unhappy.

A Hidden Find in Turf City
Wondering what to do on the weekend and tired of going to the same cafes over and over again? Scrumptious is definitely a place to check out.
Located at the insides of Turf City, I spent the afternoon having a relaxing coffee in a very family friendly environment. One can also get a hold of a few magazines and before you know it, the whole afternoon poops by in a flurry.
Finger food is available, and since my partner did not have lunch earlier, we shared a beef burger which can be quite filling. Service is friendly and they would have no qualms recommending on what is good on the menu if asked.

ok food with good friendly service
FINALLY! Got a chance to make my way to Scrumptious today, a treat from Manager...yooohooo...( Got tired of waiting for the 2 SYTs that were supposed to check out this place with me. )
Anyway, main pasta meals were so-so nice, the dessert waffle was good and the BEST was the friendly and warm service from one of the lady manager. This lady manager/boss, appeared very sincere, always smiling, and attentive, she seems to be enjoying herself. Nice and charming service from her.
The pasta we had were creamy tomato seafood ($15.90) and aglio olio with spicy sausages and rocket (Credit card 1 for 1 free). I had the creamy tomato, and I would have preferred a stronger tomato taste which was lacking, it was quite creamy and cheesy instead, with generous amt of seafood. The aglio olio was abit too herby for me but i like the generous amt of rockets. Overall both pasta were nice, but not fantastic, well its not an italian restuarant.
Deep fried butery crunchy mushroom ($7) was crunchy but plain, so I feedback to the lady manager/boss and she presented us with a very herby mayo. This dish would be better served with a more tangy sauce IMHO.
Vanilla milkshake ($7) was so-so, not thick enough for me, probably not enough of the new zealand icecream.
The star of this lunch matinee was the Malt Waffles A LA Mode ($10.90). This is FOUR palm size waffles thats crispy and dense but tasted light and fluffy, thats drizzled with chocolate and maple syrup and served with 2 scoops of ice cream. This dish can be a meal by itself, otherwise sharing with for 2-3 persons is highly recommended.
I will upload the photos this evening for viewing of the sexy star (errr...no not the lady manager/boss, THE WAFFLES!!!....well to be fair the lady boss/manager is pretty charming too...but I prefer the WAFFLES...hahahaha...)
If you do dropby, go to the right end of turf city(if u r facing the building) on the 2nd flr ,thats where you will find Scrumptious.
Oh! as there's a manicure place at the corner of the cafe, I could smell nail polish which i hate...not recommended for ppl who hates the smell of nail polish. They are presently expanding the place and the usual story telling session on saturdays for kids has been postponed till mth end of June.

Not even a 7.
Rolling out of bed late on a Sunday morning, all I wanted was a hearty brunch and good coffee. As it turned out, only my coffee craving was satisfied. I ordered an iced latte that arrived with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and was topped with a dollop of fresh cream; absolutely delish! My companion had a regular iced latte which she found to be so-so. Unfortunately, the accolades stop there.
Food-wise, I picked the bangers and mash, while my companion had a lamb dish (either a pot pie or lasagne, I forget). The B&M was decently tasty, although the portion only half-filled me up. The sausages were ok, while the mash was yummy. The lamb on the other hand was pretty much a complete disaster. All I can say is that it was unmistakably, well, lamb-y. The smell was so strong, it overpowered the other flavours in the dish, turning what would have been a decent pie into something nigh inedible. Needless to say my companion couldn't bring herself to finish it.
As a last chance to salvage this brunch, I bought a blueberry muffin, hoping that it would taste as good as it looked. As it were, my hopes were dashed as I bit into a dry, oily baked good that I was forced in the end to relegate to the trash despite me still being more than peckish. Pity.
As for prices, this place is. not. cheap. Taking the B&M for example, just a few dollars more will get you Eggs Benedict at the Ritz-Carlton.
Perhaps I made the wrong food choices, but more misses than hits tips this spot into the not-going-again bin even though their coffee truly stands out.
