  1. My favourite weekend hangout spot

    Apr 7, 2008
Discovered Scrumptious! based on the Top 10 Hidden Finds list on the HGW mainpage and well chuffed about this find.

Scrumptious has become my favourite hangout place during the weekends. A gem like this place really stands out in a place as scruffy as Turf City which has developed into a real activity hub of sorts for adults and kids. For one, the cafe is the perfect place for families / parents to lounge around while waiting for their kids parked at the nearby activity classes. On any given day you’ll find families and parents lounging around, waiting for their kids finishing up their taekwondo/art/etc classes. Just last Saturday I had a great time listening in on the (free) story telling session which the cafe organized (sessions at 1pm, 2 pm and 3pm - not sure if its on a weekly basis though). Even with a strong family attendance, I never feel overwhelmed or out of place like I do in a place like Globetrotters for example.

Cannot agree more on the excellent coffee which Scrumptious serves - I dare say this place is now top on my list in terms of a good cuppa. Using Grinders, their milk based coffees (lattes, cappucinos etc) are extremely well executed - bravo to them (check out the restuarant photos posted by HGW). I usually order the burger, Scrumptious fry up or a pasta dish whenever I am there. All competent, and the emphasis is definitely on fresh ingredients. I’m not a big muffin fan but after trying out their muffins I am a convert. One should definitely check out their first-rate muffins - no essence, all fresh fruit - their banana and blackberry ones are real winners in my books. Also like their waffles.

I love how I can get my bi-weekly mani/pedi done there (comes with a free cuppa too!) while the boyfriend enjoys his brunch / cuppa while surfing the internet or while reading the papers in the main cafe area. That way, everyone is happy. The mani/pedi area is at the back of the cafe which boasts a great view of the greenery outside (how many nail salons can boast such a relaxing view?!) plus the cafe is well-stocked with the latest magazines and journals. The nail area sits just two so you get a great relaxing experience very unlike what you will find in one of the chain nail bars. Yummy Mummies should defintiely take note!

With the competent homemade food, excellent coffee, easy and relaxed feel, I am well pleased with this find. With ample parking as well, this place just makes the perfect weekend chillout joint.

  2. A hidden find in Turf City

    Jan 4, 2008
Ambience, is a lot like the cafes you see in Melbourne. especially along Domain road. Kinda classy but does not take itself too seriously. There are little touches like rubics cubes on every table to entertain the young and not so young ones.
There's also a childrens enrichment centre called Kindyroo associated with the cafe. Where there are ongoing activities for the kids.
Ok the food. Very much a cafe style menu. Large chalkboards display the daily menu. You've got your sandwhiches, pies, bangers and mash, muffins, waffles, burgers and veggie burgers, fresh salads, cakes and a special breakfast call the Scrumptious special. They also have the Pure New Zealand brand of ice cream. What makes this place stand out above the star bucks and other cafes is that a lot of the menu is made on site. Ie not from some mass produced factory and has a nice homemade taste to it.
    So far I've tried
    1. Banoffee pudding- It's essentially a Banana/ toffee pudding served with a beautiful rich homemade toffee sauce. Very much akin to a sticky date pudding with a dollop of vanilla ice cream.
    2. Pot Pie - I had the steak and mushroom variety. It comes in a ramekin filled with yummy chunks of tender beef and mushrooms in a really tasty sauce topped with mash potato and cheese and a side of fresh garden greens. I was pleasantly surprised at the presentation as this is not some haute cuisine kinda place.
    3. Latte - Finally a place with really good latte near my house. Man it's hard to get a good coffee in singapore. I can't stand it when a place gives you stale coffee, or burns the grind or burns the milk or worse still tries to serve you a latte with UHT milk. I mean what gives right? Well, the coffee here brings back fond memories of Lygon street. Beautifully textured milk with a really aromatic blend of beans. Thinking of it makes me one to drive over and get a cup right now!
Also took a peak at the manicure and pedicure area. Really comfortable and looks out toward s a large expanse of green. And according the the staff comes with one of those nice coffees.
Service, was a bit amaturish but very keen and ernest.
All in, a really nice place to go for great coffee and cafe chow in a relaxing environment.
Oh they are not open for dinner nor on sundays

    • Coffee Heaven!

      Jan 5, 2008
Yes I like coffee as you can see from my other reviews and this little cafe tucked away in Turf City was quite an unexpected find. I was attracted by the sign outside which advertised their Australian coffee.

If you like Jones the Grocer or Caffe Beviamo coffee, you'll love the coffee at Scrumptious! I actually think its better than Jones the Grocer which 8 days dubbed as the best coffee in Singapore. You be the judge. My favourite is the latte. I get sudden bouts of coffee cravings during the work day just thinking of the latte...

I think another thing you should try is the waffles. They serve it with New Zealand ice cream which is great although the gf thinks its a bit too sweet.

Girls, if you're into those pedi, mani kind of things you also get your coffee for free! They've got this interesting concept where you can sit at the window and do your nails and look out into the old racecourse which my gf tells me is very therapeutic.

There is also this play area thing for kids next to the Cafe . I see quite a lot of kids there so I think you can drop your kids off in the play area while you are having your coffee. Not sure about this but defintatly a plus point for those mums who just want a break from their little kids abit for a couple minutes.

So if you're crazy about a good cup of coffee like me, or a mum who wants to chill with your girl friends without having to watch over your kids, you should definitely check out this place.

      1. What happened to this place?

        Apr 25, 2009
This place used to be a favorite hunt of my wife and I. Its just a short drive from the city and the parking is free...and the foods were pretty decent.

But my trip there today was a total disaster.

We ordered the Sausage with potato rosti and the bread basket.
The waitress came back shortly to inform us that they ran out of sausage and rosti. Its only 10.30 in the morning and they are already out of sausage & rosti. Ok.. no problem. I changed my order for a Scrumptious burger.

When the waiter served the muffins from the bread basket order, I thought they made a mistake and served me cupcakes instead because the muffins were much smaller than what they used to be. The only reply I got from the waiter was "Oh... boss says its COST CUTTING". The muffins tasted plain and cold.

Thats not the only bad news he brought, they also ran out of croissants?! The folks in adjacent tables gotten their croissant orders but the cafe just ran out when they took my order.

Just did not have the mood to finish this meal so I paid for the 'muffin' and drinks and left.
Sadly, thats not the end of my disastrous meal....I found some stubborn stains on the coffee cup. GROSS!

Definitely not coming back here again...

      2. Ambience! What Ambience?

        Mar 9, 2009
Clearly most of the reviewers here have never been to a cafe with ambience.
For the uneducated here is the dictionary meaning...

"n.The special atmosphere or mood created by a particular environment"

Now the average for the ambience of this place is 7 if I'm not mistaken. So, there I go thinking...nice place to chill on Saturday morning have a read of the paper enjoy a "highly recommended" coffee.

No one mentioned the kiddie slide or the Kiddie chairs or the three screaming babies with parents blissfully ignoring them...it's a day care centre people with a coffee shop attached. BE WARNED!!!!!
P.S. The takeaway coffee for the taxi ride to Holland village was nice.

        • Ok food, excellent for kids!

          Dec 5, 2008
Have been to Scrumptious many, many times. The food is average, it appeals to my kids palate and therefore, may not be gourmet.

The best I have tried so far is the poached eggs which was very nice. Their selection of herbal teas is also good. The kids loves the macaroni bolognese and milkshakes of course.

The big draw is the play area though. Kids like it and it will give mum and dad or mum and friends some relaxed time. Mind though that if it's raining, it becomes quite busy. Weekend mornings are packed but I have also been on a Saturday afternoon and it was almost empty! Would still recommend it though for good service and ok food with average prices.

          • There isn't much wrong, but nothing extraordinary either

            Sep 15, 2008
This cafe is few doors away from my workplace, so I've dined here a few times. Within its confines is also a manicure corner and a kids' area whose harsh lighting sits at odds with the rest of the interior. Promotions are listed on chalkboards and mirrors around the place and there are magazines for browsing.

On to the food now, which I think is a tad pricey. There are no extra charges though. The omelette (~$13) is alright; it's not watery, salty, stale, but it's not particularly outstanding either. It comes with toast and mushrooms.

The vegetarian lasagne (~$16) is weak on flavours other than the cheese and pasta, but it's to be expected when there's no tomato base. It's stuffed with zucchini, mushrooms and spinach. Rocket salad on the side never fails to brighten my day though.

The chorizo aglio olio (~$14) is actually quite nice. You get planty of slices of robust-tasting sausage under a small bed of leaves, the spaghetti leaves a little oil on the dish and the garlic isn't too pungent.

You can opt to have your sandwiches made with ciabatta or brown bread. The mozarella & mushroom variant ($9) comes stuffed with spinach, and the taste of the mushrooms is much stronger than the hot cheese. Crisps are served on the side, and they are the supermarket variety.

They have several flavours of New Zealand Natural ice-cream available, but as for desserts, the banoffee pudding (which I was surprised to find and looking forward to trying) was a letdown. It calls to mind a microwaved (but moist) banana cake swimming in toffee sauce and topped with ice-cream...not quite the concoction, copied to death from The Hungry Monk, I recall it to be. If you ever need a sugar rush though, it's all yours for $7.50.

The malt waffles are touted as one of their specialities. $10.80 gets you 4 of the fluffy coaster-sized creations, dusted with castor sugar and served with strawberries and tinned peach slices, but the single scoop of ice-cream isn't enough to go around!

I'll still return to this place when I want some variety. Service is still attentive and helpful, and food got to me quickly enough. It feels rather generic, however, like lots of mid-priced cafes that dot the island. At least it doesn't seem pretentious, and serves honest fayre. Hold back your expectations, and you won't likely walk away unhappy.

Wondering what to do on the weekend and tired of going to the same cafes over and over again? Scrumptious is definitely a place to check out.

Located at the insides of Turf City, I spent the afternoon having a relaxing coffee in a very family friendly environment. One can also get a hold of a few magazines and before you know it, the whole afternoon poops by in a flurry.

Finger food is available, and since my partner did not have lunch earlier, we shared a beef burger which can be quite filling. Service is friendly and they would have no qualms recommending on what is good on the menu if asked.

          • ok food with good friendly service

            Jun 27, 2008
FINALLY! Got a chance to make my way to Scrumptious today, a treat from Manager...yooohooo...( Got tired of waiting for the 2 SYTs that were supposed to check out this place with me. )

Anyway, main pasta meals were so-so nice, the dessert waffle was good and the BEST was the friendly and warm service from one of the lady manager. This lady manager/boss, appeared very sincere, always smiling, and attentive, she seems to be enjoying herself. Nice and charming service from her.

The pasta we had were creamy tomato seafood ($15.90) and aglio olio with spicy sausages and rocket (Credit card 1 for 1 free). I had the creamy tomato, and I would have preferred a stronger tomato taste which was lacking, it was quite creamy and cheesy instead, with generous amt of seafood. The aglio olio was abit too herby for me but i like the generous amt of rockets. Overall both pasta were nice, but not fantastic, well its not an italian restuarant.

Deep fried butery crunchy mushroom ($7) was crunchy but plain, so I feedback to the lady manager/boss and she presented us with a very herby mayo. This dish would be better served with a more tangy sauce IMHO.

Vanilla milkshake ($7) was so-so, not thick enough for me, probably not enough of the new zealand icecream.

The star of this lunch matinee was the Malt Waffles A LA Mode ($10.90). This is FOUR palm size waffles thats crispy and dense but tasted light and fluffy, thats drizzled with chocolate and maple syrup and served with 2 scoops of ice cream. This dish can be a meal by itself, otherwise sharing with for 2-3 persons is highly recommended.

I will upload the photos this evening for viewing of the sexy star (errr...no not the lady manager/boss, THE WAFFLES!!!....well to be fair the lady boss/manager is pretty charming too...but I prefer the WAFFLES...hahahaha...)

If you do dropby, go to the right end of turf city(if u r facing the building) on the 2nd flr ,thats where you will find Scrumptious.

Oh! as there's a manicure place at the corner of the cafe, I could smell nail polish which i hate...not recommended for ppl who hates the smell of nail polish. They are presently expanding the place and the usual story telling session on saturdays for kids has been postponed till mth end of June.

Rolling out of bed late on a Sunday morning, all I wanted was a hearty brunch and good coffee. As it turned out, only my coffee craving was satisfied. I ordered an iced latte that arrived with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and was topped with a dollop of fresh cream; absolutely delish! My companion had a regular iced latte which she found to be so-so. Unfortunately, the accolades stop there.

Food-wise, I picked the bangers and mash, while my companion had a lamb dish (either a pot pie or lasagne, I forget). The B&M was decently tasty, although the portion only half-filled me up. The sausages were ok, while the mash was yummy. The lamb on the other hand was pretty much a complete disaster. All I can say is that it was unmistakably, well, lamb-y. The smell was so strong, it overpowered the other flavours in the dish, turning what would have been a decent pie into something nigh inedible. Needless to say my companion couldn't bring herself to finish it.

As a last chance to salvage this brunch, I bought a blueberry muffin, hoping that it would taste as good as it looked. As it were, my hopes were dashed as I bit into a dry, oily baked good that I was forced in the end to relegate to the trash despite me still being more than peckish. Pity.

As for prices, this place is. not. cheap. Taking the B&M for example, just a few dollars more will get you Eggs Benedict at the Ritz-Carlton.

Perhaps I made the wrong food choices, but more misses than hits tips this spot into the not-going-again bin even though their coffee truly stands out.

In the mani/pedi corner i mean so i hope this place doesn't get too overcrowded. But since combat wombat has already leaked the news figured will do the place some justice. I know this is typically a food review site but the french manicures here are fantastic! Don't normally do manis (such an impractical luxury!) but after I did my first one here in Dec, am hooked!

Ok - on to the more relevant stuff... haven't tried the real food but the desserts are pretty decent. The apple crumble is SINFUL. I told my friend I could only manage half but before I realised it..gone! I think its the crumbly bits.. they are ultra delicious - like bits of digestive biscuits bits.

The lemon meringue tart is also pretty good. Not sour enough for me but am sure it will do for the singaporean palette. The crust is oh so good.. Mmmm.

Actually the bit about real food is not entire true. I had some soup – some strange butternut or pumpkin or strange orangey soup. I don’t normally do melony soups but it was recommended by the café so I gave it a go and no regrets.

This place isn’t fine-dining or gourmet food but the grub is decent, the crew is friendly, parking is free and they have excellent nail staff. I hope this place lasts the curse of turf city..

              • My favourite weekend hangout spot

              • Not bad lah... and got babycinos some more!

                Mar 30, 2008
                Ate here with the family.

                To sum it up:

Food-wise, not too bad, but nothing spectacular.

I had the Eggs Benedict. Eggs were nicely poached, but the Hollandaise sauce tasted a bit weird, not smooth and somewhat lumpy. Plus they added spinach! (making it an Eggs Florentine, actually). Overall, not bad, but the Hollandaise sauce put me off a bit. Wifey had the portobello sandwich, which was decent. Kids had the usual kiddy stuff - fish fingers, nuggets, fries. The fries were only very lightly salted, a touch which I liked, and the fries were nice and crispy.

Service was quite good - staff were initially slightly disorganised, but recovered soon after, and apologised profusely when certain items were unavailable. The owner also came over to tell us when storytelling was going to start at the nearby Kindyroo, since they noticed we had young kids.

As a plus point, coffee was pretty good, and came in short, squat, thick walled glasses like they have in Melbourne, which was a bit nostalgic for me (in a good way). For other folks who've lived in Australia, yes, they also have babycinos (great for kids!), which was a pleasant surprise.

Overall, the place was a reasonable facsimile of an Aussie, child-friendly cafe, and did a nice job of feeding us.

Overall, a pleasant place to chill
