Seah Street Deli - The Tuna Melt is shiok seah...
Aug 2, 2008K, this is a one-off recommendation for one item on the menu.
I'm not a big fan of Seah Street Deli - salads close to $20??? What the... - but no choice business lunch ended up being there.
Sooo in-between sneering at the over-priced menu, I decided to go with the Tuna Melt. I'm a big tuna fan (Jap, canned, whatever except the dolphin kind)so I'd say I have sooome standards lah.
AND I was pretty impressed with what they served up. The standard brown bread that was smothered with tuna melt (you could hardly even see the sides of the slice) and boy was it flavourful.
I was smacking my lips and eating it slowly to prolong the pleasure. Yuuummmmy!!!
AND get this, there was so much tuna melt left after the brown slice was gone that I started dipping me fries in it.
So so goood.
I'm salivating as I'm signing off....*slurp*
P.S. - The place was too too noisy so lunch ambience is basically sucky...and service was the usual Singapore sub-par. There were at least two tables that were super pissed with the delayed service...one table of four had two parties almost finishing their food when the other two got served. NOT COOL! My business associate didn't enjoy his lunch - club sandwich and chocolate milkshake which was basically, no big shakes. Sooo...be focussed. Suffer everything for the shiok shiok tuna melt. As the lil kid in the Macs ad said 'tomorrow going you know'. Woohoo!!!

Chocolate decadence decay
Jun 21, 2007I remember I used to love the chocalate decadence cake here. At 7.95+++, its size certainly made it value for money. The amalgam of sourness from the raspberry layers and the sweetness and bitterness from the dark chocolate layers, coupled with the rich chocolate ganache, definitely made this one of my fav choc cakes in town. When ordered dining in, it was also served nicely plated with whipped cream and a chocolate decoration.
Recently, I found that standards, unfortunately, have crashed. The cake slice seemed smaller. In addition, as mentioned by the poster earlier, the necesary raspberry layer with balances the richess of the cake is gone. When served, the cake sits alone, unadorned. Very sad.
To make matters worse, the day when I tried this much degraded choc cake, I bit into a few shards of egg shells! When the matter was raised with the waiter, all he did was tell me the cake was made in the pastry department, which is not within Seah Street Deli. (The corollary: NOT MY THEIR PROBLEM!) We were certainly very disappointed, and promptly asked for the bill and left...
And intriguingly, for such deteriorated standards, the "deli" actually rose its price to $11.95+++ -
American food...American prices
Feb 23, 2008Dedicated to PG
So we have Botak Jones...but my ang moh bosses hardly know where Ang Mo Kio (irony ~ pun intended) or Depot Road is...but for dinner they want American food.
Raffles Hotel was the nearest i could think off...have always liked this little corner. Seah Street Deli...quiet at lunch times, it's more vibrant at dinners.
Potato Skins : 6 pieces...cheddar cheese and sour cream with bacon bits... - S$10.95
Calamari : accompanied with tatar souce...real big rings - S$11.95
Pacific Dory : Fish was ok...but looked small to me...hey, i don't even eat fish - S$18.50
Lamb Shanks : Looked the best of the 3 main dishes...accompanied with mash potato...it looked deliocious, it must have been...only the bone was left eventually! - S$18.50
Elvis Burger : yours truly had that...nothing special to me, but good value for money due to gigantic portion...with fries at that! - S$16.95
when your bosses leave smiling...it means Seah Street Deli passed the test...phew

affordable- for Raffles hotel standards
Aug 17, 2009It's been years since i came here! but i must say it still retained its typical amercian vibe ! Now the waiters are dressed like baseballers. Something you wouldnt associate Raffles Hotel with.
food portion was huge, well at least for a lady's appetite.
I ordered the fish and chips. Managed to finish the fish but left half the fried on my plate! Mike shake was rich and creamy. So hearty! if you are looking for american junk food and ok prices, do come here. it is comparable to what you pay at other non hotel joints. Yet the service here is almost guaranteed to be good. after all , it is part of the Raffles HotelMust Tries

different
Jun 27, 2009Was there on a Friday night. Boisterous atmosphere, with loud music and people chatting. Service staff were courteous and polite, and friendly. The place was not that airy, and there's an oily smell hanging in the air but we got used to it.
Their menu was interesting as it looks like a very thin newspaper. Ages since I last visited (probably more than eight years ago!), hence ordered the SSD Fish & Chips (~$16++), to relive the good 'ol days. But it has changed. The famous pickles were missing as well. The fish was bland. My friend ordered the 'Stadium' (~$15++) which is a sausage in a hotdog bun kinda thingy with cheese and served with 1 small serving of a side dish of your choice (each side dish is priced at $4.90++). The sausage tasted pretty good.
We ordered salad as well, and it came with a separate container (like paper cup kind) of bacon oil dressing. Fragrant but a tad unhealthy for salad though.. and first time I came across such 'unique' dressing... However, you can request for their normal thousand island or balsamic vinegar dressing, no problem.
For desserts, we ordered the dark chocolate ice-cream, singapore sling sherbet and brownie (with vanilla ice-cream). Dark chocolate was goood, and the brownie even better!
Only once towards the end of our meal, the brownie took ages to arrive but it was worth the wait.Must Tries

hidden find in raffles hotel
Jan 5, 2009We ended up having dinner at this place because the other restaurants were either fully booked or they only have the festive menus which cost a bomb. It was xmas eve.
Service staff were all smiles and ardent. The menu comes in the form of newspaper and personally i find it quite a challenge to go through it. We ordered the chicken salad, pasta, grilled chicken, nachos & finally the decadence cake.
I had the grilled chicken & chose wedges to go with it. Nothing to shout abt but i enjoyed the meal nevertheless. The decadence cake is indeed yummy and satisfy my sweet tooth... but I din quite like the blueberry jam among the layers which I thought clash with the chocolate taste instead. The nachos is a nice side dish to have while you catch up with your friends. Portions are quite big so small eaters are advised to share. The jukebox can be quite a pain as it plays loud music non-stop and those sitting nearer to it might find it difficult to have a conversation, let alone enjoy a romantic dinner.
Perhaps it was the company, perhaps it was the mood for xmas but it was a pleasant evening.Spent about

Craving satiated, and a wee surprise
Dec 19, 2008A decade had passed since I last dined at SSD. Nevertheless, I was craving for a macaroni 'n cheese that wasn't from the freezer or Kenny Rogers, and this place sprang to mind.
The place still feels bright, airy and old-fashioned, with the green marble tabletops and the (free) jukebox. Strangely enough, it loads the CDs you select but doesn't play the songs stated.
As it was 'fish day' of the week, I decided not to add sausages or chicken to my macaroni 'n cheese (about $3 on top of the standard $10.90++). I decided to try the barley and mushroom soup ($6.90) as well.
The soup was quite a delight. The dish was filled to the brim with it (enough for the waitress to make baby steps). It's a clear broth that had barley pearls, slices of mushroom and bits of carrot. It was savoury, with hardly any sweetness of carrots, but it was wholesome and flavoured dominantly by the mushrooms. You can opt to have a dinner roll with it (but I didn't)
The macaroni 'n cheese was next (and last). The pasta was firm, and smothered with the sauce-like cheese that was slightly spiced and not Kraft-like (as far I can remember what processed cheese tastes and looks like). It wasn't too heavy in spite of the large serving but those not used to dairy stuff might not agree.
Service was good - the waitresses presented me with the day's newspapers for my perusal while I waited for my food, and they enquired now-and-then to ask if everything was alright. I'd love to return to try the meat dishes, and was happy to discover the barley soup.Must Tries

Chocolate decadence
Sep 25, 2008After reading the reviews on their chocolate decadence, i decided to try it out. The price is quite stiff...$12.70 after GST and SVC charge for take away.
Service is friendly and prompt... they attend to me immediately when i entered the deli and took out my order attentively.
The cake is really huge. It consists of many layers, decorated with b/berries and r/berries and served along with r/berry sauce. The fudge is quite thick so serving with r/berry sauce is ideal.
I really enjoy this cake and i managed to finish such a big slice of cake alone. I really hope they could introduce more cake or desserts to their menu.Must Tries

Seah Street Deli
Jul 4, 2008Seah Street Deli has an American air around it, it is after all a restaurant serving your good old American food. Don’t let the name Seah Street fool you, the place is call Seah Street deli because the restaurant is located in Raffles Hotel, which is just beside Seah Street.
Step into Seah Street Deli, and you will be transported back in time to 1950s New York. The restaurant does imitates the look of a Big Apple Deli quite well, the lightning, the decors and the furnitures all oosh a certain classical American touch.
Located at the colonial Raffles Hotel, Seah Street Deli is just a 5 minutes walk away from Raffles City. Certainly an accessible place for a meal if you are in the area and do not want to be in the crowd.
Nowadays where else can you find a jukebox? Talk about nostalgic, they certainly roll back the good old time.
Wild Pacific Dory Fillet ($18.50)
Served with natural organic vegetables, baby potatos, and lemon wine sauce. The wild pacific dory fillet comes up to be quite ordinary actually. The dory is fresh, but not much of a surprise there, and at $18.50, its a tad expensive. Serving size is definitely huge, well it should be, we are talking about American food after all.
Grilled Salmon Steak ($18.95)
Salmon marinated with mix herbs, grilled zucchini, garlic mashed potatoes and dill cream sauce. The Grilled salmon steak taste to us slightly under-flavored, it will be better if the flavor can be stronger.
The garlic mashed potatoes are plentiful, and really, you can’t finish them off unless you really got a big appetite.
Southern Style Chicken ($17.50)
Deep fried chicken, served with fries. The portion is gigantic, but really thats it. The chicken is deep fried, done in your American style, fries are decent. But at $17.50, the Southern Style chicken is a suspect for rip-off
Seah Street Burger ($14.95)
Seah Street Deli’s very own freshly ground all beef patty with lettuce, tomatoes, and onions served on a toasted sesame bun. If you think the Seah Street Burger is big, think again. You haven’t seen the bigger burger.
Their Texas Burger a 12 ounce sized beef patty. Granted i heard quite good things about the Texas burger, but the stomach didn’t have room for it, so i ordered Seah Street burger instead.
Seah Street Burger is not too bad, the beef patty is nicely mashed, put together with the lettuce, tomatoes, and onions inside the sesame bun, you will be wondering how do you start eating the whopping burger.
Having eaten burgers in restaurants like Relish and Seah Street, not at your fastfood joints, i came to realise the only feasible way to consume them will be to cut by bites, otherwise you can always choose the alternative, take a big mouthful!
Chocolate Decadence cake ($11.95)
The all time favourite chocolate decadence cake at $11.95 do seems a bit steep. But the serving size of the cake more than make up for it. The cake is ginormous (gigantic & enormous)! Seriously, i have never seen places cutting such a big size of cake.
The chocolate decadence cake is made up of 7 layers, and each layer is sweeter than the other. Even though i have a sweet tooth, i find the cake to be too sweet. But its good to indulge in such decadence once in while. After having our main courses, the four of us actually struggle to finish the cake. A must-try if you visit Seah Street Deli.
Total bill is $95.76 for 4 mains and 1 desserts. But Citibank is offering a 15% discount for Seah Street Deli, so our bill after the discount is $81.90. Prices are slightly steep here considering the fact that the food is not bad, but not to the point excellent. At around the same price, there might be some other places which can be better.
Portions are definitely huge, this is where we made a mistake. I think for 4 person, just order 3 main course to share will be more than suffice. The chocolate decadence cake is a must try for desserts. If prices can be cheaper, then i say Seah Street is a nice and cheerful place to dine out, until then, maybe once is enough.
You are always welcome to visit ladyironchef for a full-up on this trip. Whatever written herein are my genuine feelings expressed in words. Food, my dear, is what they call an adventure!

dissapointing milkshake and service
May 24, 2008I used to regularly frequent SSD as I like its ambience. Was introduced to this place by my brother when i was still in secondary school, love the potato skins , free flow lemonade, fried chicky, choc cake, decor and etc.... Oh had my 1st waitress crush here too!! oh that sweet , specky, pony tail waitress, she looks like the MTV chick from way back when one of singapore pop group release a hit song..nice memory...oooohh have to go find that song....
anyway, came here today to kill my strawberry milk shake craving. I was surprised that they took so long to prepare a simple milk shake, were they in the garden plucking it fresh??? I did not time them , but i was flipping through my new N82 manual back and forth for 4times before getting my shake. The place at 3.30pm is not crowded , about a quarter full, so what happen? Service was rather basic but being part of raffles hotel, i would have expected more.
anyway the $12.95 milkshake, was dissapointing. It was overly thick with minimum strawberry flavour. I think Novus cafe at the musuem is still the best in singpore for strawberry milkshake.
after SSD, i wanted to get a take out sandwich from ah teng cafe (also part of raffles) but there was a small queue with only ONE lady to handle ordering and payments ( i suspect she will also be the one preparing my sandwich too). The place was almost full for afternoon high tea. Can't raffles management have scheduled more staff? I walk out as I did not want to wait.Spent about

Nice MilkShakes but long wait for food
Feb 27, 2008Went there for dinner on 14 Feb, as most places were very crowded.
All of us has different flavours of milkshakes and give thumbup for that.
Ordered panfried Pacific Dory for myself. Moist but a bit little in potion.
Another order panfried salmon. Said it too dry.
The other had steak, said it is one of better in Singapore.
The last had burger, said it is really not bad.
Service wise still got a lot to go. I had asked for a menu to leave on the table after placing order but not long after that one of the staffs just took off with it without asking. Long wait for the food. Almost finished our milkshakes before our food arrived.
Music was rather loud that day. We had to shout to make others hear.Must Tries
