Decent place

It has been some time since I was last in the Simpang Bedok Shopping Centre area and not realised that a few of the old shophouses and coffeeshops have now been turned into nice airconditioned restaurants.
Sedap Corner is literally in the back corner behind the market/food centre.

The menu consists mainly of asian food like nasi goreng with chicken, pad thai, tom yum, mostly between $8-12 and western stuff like chicken chop ($16), steak ($20), fish and chips etc. Drinks are about $3-5 and their famous kaya toast, sliced into long strips for dipping into various types of kaya, are about $3-4 per serve from memory. About 10 of us came over for someone's farewell. I did not pay so I do not how much the bill came up to.

We started off with sharing mixed seafood platters and each came with shishamo, prawns, calamari and seafood rolls. I think this is about $26 per plate and would be enough for a main course by itself. This was decent - the calamari was tender enough (a good test).

Each of us had main courses, ranging from pad thai, tom yum noodles, green curry laksa, grilled chicken, surf and turf (Steak, prawns and squid). I asked everyone for their opinions and a score out of 10 and the scores given ranged from 6 to 7.5. Most of them also added that the portions were generous for the western dishes (the surf and turf looked a lot with about 350g of steak and seafood (my estimate). My pad thai was not bad but pales in comparison with places like First Thai or Diandin.

We also ordered some kaya toast - the toast is unfortunately not charcoal toasted so does not have the wonderful charcoal taste. The bread is cut into long strips and dipped into the kaya placed in a separate bowl-shaped compartment in the dish. They have various flavours, Pandan, Durian, Jackfruit. The kaya is good but I wish they charcoal the bread. No butter - it is supposed to be in the kaya but honestly, I like it more buttery.

The place is not very big and we were the only ones indoors so it was really pleasant but I can see how it can get a bit noisy. Decor is no frills air conditioned. Toilet was clean enough.

Service was attentive and friendly.

$0.80 for plain water

The service is attentive cos there was only 1 table and mine but everything else is rock bottom.

The food sucks and I was charged $0.80 unwittingly for plain water and it was reflected as "distilled water" in my bill.

If you want tasty Malay food, go al-fresco and join the others where Spize and Hawa is. You're just paying for the air-con here and eating sucky food.

Must Tries: Nothing.
