| Ice Cream with An Impact
I had the opportunity to try the ice cream here recently. Located at an out-of-the-way location at Raeburn Park, this is the research lab of a nice young group of entrepreneurs who hope to dominate an otherwise already very competitive ice-cream industry with their own creations.
I tried several in-house created flavours, such as their chocolate and passion fruit, and the one thing I concluded was that it was a lot heavier than your usual ice creams. This would probably do well in reaching out to those that like a hearty dessert. However, as I am not much of a heavy dessert person (given that I need to lose some pounds) and given that the location requires a car, I am doubtful that this would be a regular dessert visit spot for me. |

| Another Ice Cream Gem
I decided to bring the parentals to give Seventh Heaven a visit after I had read about it on HGW.
I didn't really know what to expect actually. The reviews I've read were pretty good but I didn't want to get my hopes up. The higher the expectations, the greater the possibility of disappointment.
It took us a while to figure out where the information counter was (which was the thing to look out for in order to figure where the entrance was as pointed out by an earlier reviewer - thanks!).
The place was pretty empty especially for a Friday night, but I guess there isn't much human traffic around the area. (It's really friggin' ulu.) I say pretty empty, I meant totally empty except for the staff, who were all in the kitchen.
Decor-wise, it was kept pretty minimal. The split level setting and the warm tones utilised kept it cozy and interesting. It would have been even cooler if they'd lighted candles in the candle holders on the tables.
We decided on Sampler I which let you choose 3 flavours. We picked chocolate, chocolate & whisky and chocolate & coffee crunch. Chocolate & whisky was easily my favourite of the 3, a sentiment echoed by my mom. Chocolate was apparently "Amedei Toscano Black 70%" which sounded rich and bitter, but it's actually very nice. Coffee crunch wasn't as satisfying as the other two. I couldn't really taste the coffee.
We had such a great time we decided to try more ice cream. So we ordered a Large - 2 flavours - Creamy Espresso and Irish Cream, both delicious flavours. My official fave is now Creamy Espresso.
I have to comment that what separates them from places like Island Creamery isn't only the alcoholic ice cream (Island Creamery has Tiger beer flavours mah), but the presentation is a bit 2am-esque, so it lends the atas-ness without losing it casualness.
The lady owner (I think?) was very amiable and even asked if we were too cold because the air-conditioning was kinda freezing, and offered to turn it down a notch.
All in all a very pleasant experience. |

| A little below expectations
Read a couple of "thumbs up" reviews highlighting the excellent alcoholic ice cream here and so decided to pop by this place (albeit ulu) to try it out.
Perhaps I had too high expectations of the ice cream here, thus I left feeling slightly disappointed with the 'weak' alcoholic flavours.
Ordered the Black Forest, Butter Scotch Pecan, and the Lychee Martini flavours as part of a 3-scoop set. All were pretty decent but none particularly stood out though the Lychee Martini ice cream did had a strong lasting taste.
Maybe for people who like alcoholic ice cream but prefer a more subtle liqueur taste, this is the right place for you. Otherwise for more 'hardcore' alcholic lovers, it may be wise to continue your search elsewhere. |

| I Scream for Ice Cream!
The Mrs lately got severe craving for ice cream (no lah, not pregnant.. *panic*). Not just any red bean kacang ice cream, walls or magnolia ice cream. No. She make me work for my marriage. She wants GOURMET ice cream. Special ice cream.
Lucky in Singapore got many such ice cream shops, like Island Creamery (Mrs sick of that place now), Daily Scoop (not yet sick, heng ah). But hor, most of the time, the ice cream cater for younger generation lor - students lah (wah lau Island Creamery like school nowadays, they just missing teacher and discipline master).
For adult like me (older lah), who got friends name like Walker, Hennesey, Martell, Bean, ice cream hor, no kick.
Then skarli one day, i read this popular food blog about this place which serve this ice cream for ADULTS! Ho say! strike 4D! Must bring Mrs there. After all, they serve ice cream WITH WHISKEY!!
So off we go on Sat night, treat Mrs lah, see me so nice. Went to 10 Raeburn Park, which is near the Railway Station (see only adult will remember this place).
Wah lau. It can't get more ULU than this! The place is old Gan Eng Seng (former ah beng!), converted to Marketing Institute of Singapore. No sign posting for Seventh Heaven, so drive into carpark area, look dam deserted leh. Die lah, did we get wrong address. Mrs getting angry and worried some ex-Gan Eng Seng ah beng will come after us, say my direction again lan lan. I tell her I man I never wrong, train in army know topo. Lucky, I spot the information counter.
Even luckier, info counter next to Seventh Heaven. So if you need help recce place, just look for info counter hor.
The place is very very quiet. Maybe cos really ulu even on Sat night. We only 2 people there. You can see the kitchen (very clean.. pass!) but that day, noone making ice cream there so no show. The menu is not long, about 7-8 flavours, got chocolate cake too.
But I zero in on the chocolate and whiskey ice cream. They also have butter scotch pecan (with scotch whiskey!). We ordered 2 flavours to try first. It came well presented, with a very suspicious ball in a cup until Mrs told me is brandied cherry and not some animal spare part. More alcohol for me!
Wah.. first bite of the ice cream. Let me warn you first. You CANNOT tell your family doctor you came here to eat ice cream. It is everything the doctor warn you about unhealthy eating - got alcohol, got sugar, got cream, one-bite-straight-away-diabetes industry grade. But as people say 'only live once' 'death by chocolate' 'good food always got bad ingredient for health... like pork lard'.
The chocolate is supposely gourmet chocolate (amedei? i only know nestle) but the ice cream is so solid, so yummy.. one scoop really not enough! But a bit pricey lor, so must control myself. They sell in takeaway too, in pints, so maybe one day I buy pint. The alcohol - okay, the level not high enuf to make me sing karaoke song but still hor, it really is damn shiok to have ice cream with alcohol.. really got kick!!
Mrs and I will definitely return to try other flavors and the chocolate cake, which is supposely very good too. So now I know where to bring my drinking kakis to for some REAL MAN ICE CREAM! |
