Restaurant Brief
At Shin Kushiya, we are proud of our specialty kushiyaki - where the freshest ingredients are arranged artfully on bamboo skewers and grilled with care over Bincho charcoal from Japan that burns with just the right amount of heat to provide a crisp smokiness while sealing the natural flavours and juices within. Surpassing electric or gas-fueled grills, bincho charcoal is the most ideal for preparing authentic, delectable Kushiyaki.
Kushiyaki is food without pretences, with only the produce's quality and skill of our chefs to bring out the character and texture of the meats, seafoods and vegetables that we have carefully selected for your dining experience. Paired with the purest of condiments - freshly-ground sea salt, cracked black pepper and their homemade tare sauce, kushiyaki is a simple, and satisfying pleasure.
Sashimi served at Shin Kushiya is air-flown daily from the world-famous Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo. A must-try is Aji Tataki Shin-style, where thinly-sliced horse mackerel sashimi is served with their home-made sweet miso marinade.

Yucky Tori (ouch)
Aug 27, 2007I have to agree with Pheurie P that the standard of the yakitori at this place was not far from a total disappointment, especially at the prices they charge for each stick. That's about an average of about 3 bucks for the usual meat on a stick, and about 6-9 bucks for more 'premium' dishes.
The beef tongue was an absolute joke. A few miserable, shrivelled lukewarm pieces of meat on a little plate for about 8 bucks. We couldn't even tell from the taste and consistency whether it was tongue - it might just as well have been overcooked liver.
The golden mushrooms wrapped in pork, which is usually a favourite with us, looked good but didn't taste that great. The mushrooms and meat were somehow clumped together such that there was no crunch to the bite, and I suspect the mushrooms may not have been that fresh as well. The same criticism applies to the mushrooms stuffed with meat paste.
The garlic fried rice (about $5), which we ordered as a filler, tasted so bland that we might as well have ordered white rice.
On the other hand, to be fair, there were a couple of promising dishes such as the foie gras at $8.80/stick (then again, very few places manage to screw up on grilling foie gras) and the chicken thigh at about $6/stick. The oysters wrapped in pork weren't bad, although they were a little dry.
As Wonderdoggy has pointed out, this restaurant seems to have been designed to pass off sub-par food to the unwary masses who have not yet had the chance to have proper yakitori. For these prices, I might as well have gone to Shunjuu, Satsuma or a host of other places which actually serve much better food for a relatively marginal difference in the cost.Must Tries

The foie gras die die must try!!
Apr 19, 2007Imagine a dimly lit cosy corner with sleek black table and simple - but expensive chairs - to the soft romantic strains of Japanese orchestra with a good view of a starlit sky.
Well that's not what this place is about. This is Singapore, where to find stars??? No, those purportedly on caldecott hill don't exactly count.
The decor is nice enough, but the booths are not private enough. I got a seat with my friend right NEXT to two women and we were separated by a translucent silk curtain.
Yes, so all night long, we got to listen to how Judy went out with Steve from purchasing without telling Cheng Soon her on-off boyfriend who is now probably ex-bf given how the human resource girls on the 17th floor found them kissing in the pantry on the 23rd. well you get the picture, just add liberal doses of snorts and sniggers and u get pretty much my entertainment for the night.
The food is above-average - if you are lucky not to get the lemons (figuratively, not the real citrus kind pumped full of vitamic c goodness).
The foie gras - fatty on a stick - is a delight. As they should be, at $8.80 a stick with two pieces of liver. Crispy and aromatic woody scent on the outside, oily juicy and slippery buttery heaven on the inside. It was great! Even better than the ones I had at Kazu and Wahiro.
The Wagyu beef - at $32 a serving - was miserable. I can't help but compare that with the grilled wagyu cubes at Kazu. You'd get more bang for the buck if u get the ones at Kazu.
Nonetheless, it was tender and juicy but miserably thin. Imagine my shock when my rather health conscious friend was picking out the fatty strips fastidiously before eating them, the meat, not the fatty strips.
The salmon fish head in sake was pretty good although i didn't taste the alcohol at all. still, the flesh was juicy and bereft of the normal dryness and flakiness one tend to find in other grilled fish.
The yakitori - pork belly sticks, gingko nuts, salmon belly - were pretty run of the mill unfortunately. they weren't bad, just.. not good enough.
And now for the service, bad bad bad.
they are friendly enough and attentive to a certain extent - meaning longer attention span than a humming bird. but my attempt to remind them to get my fish head took three tries and it came well after we finished everything and were debating if we should get dessert.
getting iced water was also a major pain. we were well into the fourth dish when it came and we had to repeatedly get their attention before the drinks came.
all in, it was about $100 for 2 sans sake - which they had an extensive list although we didnt feel like having itI also recommend this place for

The visiting worm.
Jun 5, 2008Okay, so we finally stepped into this place, stone-grill, skewers etc.
I had put off writing this as I was rather traumatized by the little worm that visited us on a nice bed of Salmon/lettuce sushi (Spicy Salmon Maki) thinking he owned the garden.
This cavernous place doesn't feel like the urbanized Vivo at all. Liked the curtains though. They were rather interesting to have at a restaurant.
The rest of the food was ok. Loved the salmon belly skewer.
Well, we were happily digging into the chawanmushi and the donburi when this non-descript waitress set the plate of sushi in front of us. None of us noticed anything different.
Suddenly, my boy pointed and when I looked. I was speechless. Okay, maybe I should have screamed and fainted, and maybe we'd get more out of this. (You'll see why I say that).
We signaled to a waitress who amazingly remained composed (the worm looked abit like those white ikan bilis. It had the CHEEK to wiggle to and fro facing my boy and me as though he were saying "Hi! Who are you two?!) And then one of the supervisors started fussing over us. WHO SAYS SERVICE RECOVERY ENTAILS MORE OFFERS OF COMPLIMENTARY FOOD.
We took our same order back (despite my apprehension at eating the new plate - I only had 1 piece.) BUT THE WAITER GAVE US COMPLIMENTARY DESSERT. Hey. When we order enough to eat. You give us more. We'll waste. I couldn't even eat another bite when he set 2 mini desserts in front of us. I simply told him. I'm full. Guess what he said:"It's ok, it'll be thrown away anyway." Now, what's that supposed to mean? I'm a dustbin?
I'd take a discount anytime. No Food please.Must Tries

2nd japanese experience
Feb 20, 2010Food is just slightly better than ordinary Japanese food. I think the rice can be better. Some of the meaty where quite fatty. The tiramisu which has the recipe of plum wine in it, does not have the usual bitter coffee taste. But I still like it. The toufu cheesecake has a similar taste like a new york cheesecake. Very crowded during dinner and weekends. Remember to reserve your place in advance.I also recommend this place for

Hassle-free BBQ gourmet
Feb 8, 2010Often I smell people bbqing food in my condo and it whets up my appetite for bbq. Going to this place helps quench my cravings as it is charcoal grilled and comes with so much variety. No hassle!!! The ambience is great, overseeing Sentosa and the sea. So far, I've only ordered the kushiyaki al-carte and eat with garlic rice and the price is rather reasonable at about $20++ per person.Must Tries

Good fresh sashimi & sushi for good value
Oct 12, 2009This is one of my fave japanese good value for money restaurants, since it opened in Vivo about 2 + years back.
Must tries :
sashimi, salmon roe : fresh
sushi : the rice is really tasty
charcoal grilled skewers (beef, pork, mushroom or vegetarian)
hamachi kama (yellowtail fish cheek grilled) : this fish is lovely, and the juice retained in the cheek meat is just sweet.
Recently tried lunch sets : Both are excellent and worth it.
wafu hamburger = about $18
premium sushi = about $30
Service is always good and the view over HarbourFront and Sentosa is wonderful, if you get a window seat. I have never tried the other outlets as I like this particular outlet.
This outlet is closed for renovation until end 0ct, apparently.Must Tries

Top Notch Garlic Fried Rice and Kushiyaki
Aug 11, 2009Stop by at this place for brunch on Saturday before we watch GI Joe movie. I came with expectation that the food here must be good, because my wife was so keen to bring me here.
My last experience with Kushiyaki or Yakitori type of dishes has been far in between. Anyway, I'm a sucker for good quality meats (pork, beef or lamb) that are nicely grill or bbq with the fats. Did I say fats? Yes, fats in the meat = taste. If you don't believe me, then check out the marble in a karabuta pork or kobe beef :)
My favorites dishes so far:
1. Lamb Chop - $9.80. They bbq the lamb chop to medium well and season it slightly with salt and pepper. They even left a bit of the fat trimmings on the top of the meat, which I enjoy tremendously. The lamb chop was cut to bite-able size where you can pick it up with your chop stick and eat the whole piece at one go. It is tender, juicy and none of those overwhelming lamb smell. Yum yum.
2. Gyu Karubi (Beef) - $ 3.80. Similar to the lamb chop, season with salt and pepper and grill to medium well. The meet are tender and juicy.
3. Garlic Rice - $4.80. This is a must have dish when you come to Shin Kushiya. The best Garlic Rice (or Garlic Fried Rice) i ever tried in Singapore so far. You can feel the garlic in with every scoop of the rice, and taste is well balance. For those who don't like garlic, no need to worry, the garlic taste here is to complement the rice, instead of overpowering it.
We also tried their sashimi with is of a high quality and Warabi Mochi with Ocha ice cream (Green Tea); and Goma Ice Cream (Black sesame).
The setting here is nice. When you walk in to the restaurant, you can see the counter seats on your right. Their decor for the main dining area are a bit dark, however if you choose the window seat, you can see the view of the Sentosa (nothing to see at the moment, due to construction of IR, so sad)
Their service are excellent and they are well dress. There are always service staff nearby and it is easy to get their attention. They clear your table stealthy so that they do not disturb your dining experience. What an excellent overall experience. :)
PS: The experience come with a price though, but if you want to impress that somebody, it's all worth it.Must Tries

Lovely ambience with friendly serice
Jul 4, 2009I first tried Shin Kushiya when they first opened in 2006 in Vivocity. It left an impression on me back then, but I did not have the chance to try it after that.
Until last week. Despite the really busy atmosphere, the service crew never failed to smile whenever our eyes caught contact, making us feel at home. Added, I was impressed with their product knowledge and recommendation.
The charcoal-grilled kushiyakis tasted smoky and delicious. The chutoru (fat tuna belly) was presented in a bowl of ice to maintain its freshness, and we could see glistening ice-bits on the tuna belly. Every slice was placed tenderly to melt in my mouth. The wafu steak came medium cooked as requested, and the meat was tender and went very well with the homemade dressing. Recommended highly by the staff, we tried the foie gras and I was ecstatic with joy when the richness of the foie gras slided down the throat with a sip of sake. Most of the kushiyaki items we tried left us with no complaints.
We had a bottle of Shin boutique sake as recommended by the service crew, and the sweetness of the sake accompanied all the sashimi we had. We ended the dinner with Shin's home creation desserts, and left the restaurant with a satisfied tummy and wide smile.
I had one of the best dinner in my life, with good company and good food. If only life is always so perfect.Must Tries

Nice food but pretty ex
May 21, 2009I've tried a couple of their dishes; sashimi, salmon maki, bbq sticks, curry don and dessert.
First off, I like their fresh sashimi.. especially their sweet prawn. But It's alittle too costly at 9.80+++ for just 3.
And they have promotion for the second plate of sashimi at 50% off till 30June. Their seafood curry don is delicious, not too hot and salty.. If u're someone who doesn't like too hot stuff, this will be recommended. Those have squids and prawns in the curry and the prawns are fresh! however, price at 19.80++, i probably won't want to try that again. :P
The bbq sticks such as golden mushroom with pork was so yummy! bbq scallops, beef, their recommended pepper chicken or chicken with wasabi..all of the above are the must eat!! I've never tried such yummy bbq before.. And their priced at 2.60++ - 3.80++ or even more per stick. Little ex, but it's a good try!
Their maki with spicy mayonese salmon is rather Normal. Nothing quite special or tasty though. But it was a fair share of serving, 8 maki for 10.80++.
The best part of it all was the dessert!!!!!!! it's a must try.. the sesame ice-cream topped with a chocolate biscuit and strawberries. It's really nice!! and they have a promotion at $5 before 6pm.. a waste that we didn't manage to get the offer price.. instead at 7.80++. But though serving is small (just a single scope), it's worth the try and the uniquenes of the sesame taste of the ice-cream. Not so sweet and feels so smooth in the mouth. YUM!
If ask if it's a good place to dine with family, yea definitely.. cos they have quite a range of food to choose from. Other than the above that i've mentioned, they have Udon, set meals, tempura or other japanese food that you can name off.
Service was not very good though, we'll have to ask for the refill of green tea. Another negative thing was that the food just come non-stop and you feel like you've gotta finish your food fast. You can't really savour it slowly cos the table was abit small for two.
Ambience is alright and there's plenty of table and seat inside, so no waiting time is required. Overall, a nice place to dine!Must Tries
ALL of the above, probably to consider the maki
