| sandwich still nice
Was walking home at abt 5.30pm today, when i noticed that there's no crowd at simply bread (usually crowded for brunch!), Great! I got myself my fav roast beef sandwich for dinner.
Service was normal , order, pay, got a cup of self service water(with lime) while waiting and then got my snadwich in 5-10min.
When I got home, i realised the wheat bread (which I like) was not slightly toasted, OH! they forgot to ask and I forgot to tell. Roast beef was good and generous, not chewy, loose and easy to bite into. Came with tomato and my fav spread. The BEST part of the sandwich is the spread that they used, i think its mustard with the seeds. The slightly tangy flavour goes sooooo well with the roast beef. Would prefer to have abit more of the mustard though.
However, there seems to be something missing??? no idea what....what's missing???? besides the toast...
Anyway, the sandwich is still nice but price have increased to 10.20 plus .75 GST , total = 10.95. I remembered it was cheaper then, I have not been here for some time as it got TOO Crowded,no longer a great chill out spot. |

| Poor service and overcharges
I'm going to just talk about the experience here, not the food since the management of this place has deemed it unnecessary by their practice to accept written feedback for their establishment. I decided to head to this place for breakfast again after the previous time which made me decide that the experience was pretty enjoyable. This time round, it wasn't as satisfying. Was there at about 10am on Saturday 15/3/08.
Bad service staff
Service by a particular indian staff there was pretty bad. I was asking for add on options for the sandwich and I was simply told "no" when I enquired. That indian staff didn't bother to ask anyone before that reply. After that, he simply headed away to another customer and gave me the act that he was very busy when there was about 2 counter staff and 3 persons on queue. He acted in a very impatient manner when the second counter staff which was a bespectacled chinese national was working on the register.
This second counter staff was actually doing a good job as a service staff. Despite his lack of familiarity with the register, he said yes to my inquiry regarding the sandwich add ons even though he wasn't sure how it was to be done on his part. He was very accommodating to what I consider to be a small request.
What I though was unacceptable about the service is the indian guy. I'm not expecting exquisite courtesy and mannerisms here, but his behavior is plainly rude to customers and overbearing to his colleague.
Overcharge
I had a roast beef sandwich on the previous visit which cost me $6. It says $6 on the web menu and also the same on the paper menu at the place. This visit, I was charged $10.20 before the add ons. I was told that that sandwich was a popular choice there. Just how on earth was that mistake made for a popular item on the menu which is recorded by an electronic register, eludes me. The 2 eggs that I requested for in the sandwich cost me $6.05. Now those are certainly very expensive eggs. I think it would be fair to have a method of informing customers of how add ons are charged if you're deciding that your eggs are worth $3 each.
The amount which I was charged for brunch plate was also higher than indicated on the menu.
Is there an explanation as to why the items on the receipt are correct while the prices are different?
I had tried to make this feedback known to the management, but I was informed by the staff when I called that there wasn't an email available and that they would convey to the management that a feedback would be forthcoming. The staff had mentioned to get the management to contact me via a number which I had left behind, and I would like to see how this is handled. |

| a good breakfast place?
Simply Bread makes a very nice location for breakfast. There are several reasons for me saying this. Firstly, you get al fresco with the shade. It's tends not overly crowded despite the fact that there are quite a bit of people that head down in the morning for their first meal of the day. The open seating areas do not feel cluttered and there are newspapers and magazines which one can borrow from the confectionery to accompany the breakfast, allowing for a leisurely meal with reading to be enjoyed with your coffee. The selection for breakfast is ample as well and prices aren't unkind to the wallet. All of it along a laid back glorified canal riverside.
There were a few things that I've had among the varied selection that I thought were pretty good. The roast beef sandwich ($6), amongst a selection of quite a few different sandwiches that are available would be something that I think is quite a delectable choice. It's getting a simple sandwich correct in it's simplicity which this place does and many places fail miserably at. That means filling up a roast beef sandwich with beef instead of padding them with other unwanted things. Here, they do not sting and as you can see, there's only tomatoes and mustard that's in the sandwich. There is also a choice from a variety of bread to be used for your sandwich.
The ham steak with eggs breakfast plate arrived quite the regular looking platter with two eggs and a couple of slices of toasts. These thicker slices of honey baked ham are actually quite tasty. I don't remember the last time I tasted the honey in honey baked ham. There is a choice for how you want the eggs to be done. There is also a sticky bun ($1.20) which is essentially a cinnamon caramel coated bun which tasted a lot better than it looked or sounded. The only gripe I had was the coffee which despite having the benefit of an additional shot of espresso, didn't quite pack the oomph that I was hoping to kickstart my morning heart.

| Best Bread In Singapore!
This is my fav place for breakfast! Very laid back and it's nice sitting by the river reading the paper.
Pretty simple self-service set up. Line up to order, get your own drinks etc. The food is generally brought out promptly and staff are courteous and are able to handle changes to orders and get the right.
My fav is the GHC - Grilled Ham and Cheese Sandwich with Mustard. Very simple but tasty!
This is a no frills place but the food is good quality and at a reasonable price. |

| Real bread
OK this place is about REAL bread, not the emulsifier-laden over-soft over-sweet stuff that places like BreadT--- and F--- Le---- sells. Just my type of bread, hand made, robust with fragrant slightly burnt smell.. Mmmmm. Does that mean the soft bread is not real - no, of course not, but this is the traditional stuff that you get in Germany and Europe (bread rather than rice-eating peoples)
They also sell sandwiches - between $5-10. Very nice.
Loaves of bread are typically $5-8 but no different from Bakery Depot (another place with REAL bread)
So, it is not cheap, OK, but very nice indeed.
For lunching, thre are some simple tables outside and a counter inside, so ambience is OK but can get a bit hot (outside)
Service is pretty decent.
Value - it depends how you look at it. For the quality, I think it is OK.
But be warned, if you like super soft silky breads, skip this place - it is for serious bread lovers ... |
