Over rated - Poor service + so so food

After reading the nice review from hungrygowhere.
I went down to Soon Heng Steamboat resturant with my family.

Overall - Poor.

Food / Beverage
Food - Ok. Freshness - ok. Quite surprise to see frozen prawns being served. Anyway we throw them all into the steamboat
Beverage - $5 or $6 for 1 jug

Ambience -
Too noisy - staff shouting here and there as they are short handed.
The 'boss' even ask us when can we leave while we are waiting for food to be served.
Too cramp - People walking about keeps kicking on my baby's seat. My
If they give you outdoor seat - good luck to you if you are non smokers
Plus - long queue of people outside for ATM.

Value - $19.9 for a buffet i would say it's ok. but quality of food is poor. Didn't get to eat too much. Additional $5 for herbal soup *nice*. but subsequent refill is normal soup which is very bad. *yucks*

Service - They pretend we did order our food. And we need to check with them again and again to get repeated servings.
Refilling of rice - dyi, sorry no time to serve
Unforunately - buffet is not really buffet. We spent most of our time waiting for subsequent oders that didnt come

Must Tries: Nothing really that good

Good & Bad

1st went on a Friday nite with my gf, was surprised that the place was quite empty. Given the reviews, I tot the place would be packed during weekends.

They dun have a small table for 2 pax so we were ushered to a table big enough for 8. We were asked for the soup stock, the standards are chicken herbal & tomyam, the rest need to top up additional $5. We opted for the standard. Like Coca style, we were served without ordering a set of dishes.

The fried rice is nice, goes very well with the Korean BBQ beef & chicken. The fried toufu & prawn paste chicken wings are very nice too, served hot & juicy.

The steamboat ingredients are fresh too but I find their varieties too little, don't even have my favourite fried beancurb skin. But they made up with dang-O & fish glue.

Chilli sauces are very good too, 1 plate is definitely not enough. Their green lime juice cost $6/jug, taste like Mama-Lemon but goes well with the food.

Their infamous muah chee is served last as dessert but of coz you can order again, soft & nice, really a MUST-TRY.

1 major down side may be the accessibility to the restaurant unless you drive.

Must Tries: all the 6 cooked food

Not too bad

After reading all the positive reviews, last night I decided to go to Soon Heng for Steamboat with my hubby.

We reached there about 8pm and it is not very crowded as we are able to get a table as soon as we arrived. Indeed, the place is abit hard to find. But with SBS Transit guide, we transferred 2 buses before reaching there. My hubby is the one who spotted it before we got down the bus. The words are in white with orange background, got his attention immediately.

After we sat down, a lady asked what soup base we one. She mentioned all the soup base without telling us that other than the standard one, the others need $5 additional. I know there will be a $5 charge for other soup through the review but my hubby don't know. Hence, he requested the other. Hmm.. I think that the lady should tell us more how they function since it is our first time there. She is kind of in a hurry to settle us. The dishes are given to us automatically. We no need to fill in any order form. It is quite good but I don't know what is in the list which I can order. For an example, she did not give me any fried chicken wings and muah chee. I was other tables got it without asking. Starting I thought that is not in the buffet menu. So actually don't dare to order. But it looks nice, so I thought even if need money also nvm, at least I tried. So I ordered from another staff.

Their service is not bad as in the staff always put on a smile on their face. But I think there are room for improvement like the intro of their food and how it works.

Their Korean Chicken & Beef are good too. For chicken, it is abit too spicy for me though. I hardly eat beef but their beef is great! yum yum..

Planning to go with my friends next month. Haha..

Must Tries: Fried Chicken Wing, Muah Chee, Korean Chicken & Korean Beef

great value for steamboat

The place was not difficult to find. Along the main road and the shop has an orange facade.
My wife and me were there @ 615pm on a weekday and we're the only customers there. By the time we left, there were 3 more other tables occupied. However, we were told it will be croweded during weekends, so make your bookings in advance.
I'm pretty impressed by the service. Service was prompt and the dishes were served piping hot. The items for the steamboat was also fresh.

Must Tries: Muar Chee, Korean Pork

curb your cravings, try this!

I finally got around to eating steamboat, after my cravings for tom yam seafood (since friday).

It's not easy getting to Soon Heng Steamboat Restaurant. You've got to walk past Horne Rd (pronounced as Horny? so, the lady boss of Soon Heng suggests), and it's beside a coffee shop.

The restaurant were surprisingly neat and clean. Being the early diners, it's a haven; with no disturbance from anybody. The place were pretty much deserted, we were the very 1st diner to be there (around 5.40pm) and not a single soul stepped into the restaurant till 7pm. Guess the business is slow on days like tuesday perhaps?

Let's start with the soup first, oh we chose the standard ones. The chicken stock is rather plain and the tom yam soup isn't quite fantastic. Have to agree with the other reviewers that the food is fresh though.

The Korean chicken and Beef bulgolgi tastes pretty much the same.
Oh, the service was awfully good, and they're friendly.

Must Tries: Muah Chee!
