| ......value for money porridge
I'll raise my hand and agree with ICE on the comments in the first review. In this era, I think it is quite difficult to find $2.20 bowl of porridge already. The stall front is not decorated with "accreditations" from the likes of Makansutra. Soon Lee doesn't need it to draw customers.
If you are trying to eat during lunch, prepare to wait 25mins which they always tell me. You are lucky if the wait is shorter than 25mins.
Cost :S$2.20 per bowl, S$2.50 per bowl with egg, S$3.00 per bowl with extra meat.
The only other thing I can add to what ICE had comprehensively written......are some photos (taken with my camera phone).

| One Bowl Not Enough!
Really lah!
This is another porridge place I endorse wholly. I grew up on this porridge, so by default, I slurp this healthy gruel whenever I am in the Clementi area. Now don’t expect the silky smooth Canto sort or the grainy Teochew porridge type coz this place serves up scrumptious Hainan porridge which is almost occasional in our *yawn* local hawker scene. (ok no need to tell me lah I know there’s Joo Chiat Porridge *far* and Chai Chee Porridge *far far*) Hainanese porridge straddles between the smooth and sometimes watery Canto chok and the discernible grainy Teochew equivalent. Hence for the unacquainted: The Grains in a good bowl of Hainanese chok are still quite visible, albeit mushy.
Here the perennial favorite is the Pork Porridge ($2.20), which comes with a generous amount of meatballs (bak chor), lean meat, and liver *my fav! :D* if you love this only-slightly offensive-smelling organ. They also serve mean Chicken and Fish versions for boring health-conscious folks. Standard condiments with your order are the mandatory you cha kuey, splashing of fried shallots, fragrant chopped spring onions and the requisite mustard greens (dong cai), all these which stems from the rudiments of traditional Hainanese chok.
My usual order *in Chinese* keke:
“Lao ban, zhu rou zhou bu yao you bu yao shou rou jia dan bu yao you cha kuey bu yao na me xian.”
Translated version:
“Uncle, pork porridge no oil (fried shallots as they call it) no lean meat add egg no you cha kuey (sometimes) and less salty please.”
*Phoar!*
Lol you think I’ll drive them crazy? This is no way any daunting for them! They’ve never once messed up my super-complicated order coz they do implement a special coding and color system for ngiow special requests like yours truly’s demands. *peace* And that’s why I love this place!
I love the meatballs coz the fatty parts of the mince makes it more nua and juicy. The livers are always fresh coz the owners get expedient supplies from the nearby market as they sure do run out damn fast! I simply abhor liver that is past its best which just means no keeping more than a day. Aiyos those really are grotesque I must say…but nary those terrible offals here! The slivers of liver are oh-so-bloody red which still quiver *shudder* upon your spoonful as the bosses here merely but scorch them with the piping porridge waterfall. *I love liver!* fish...pig…duck…goose…bring it all!
The best part? Forget the cholesterol and have an egg (+ $0.30) to go with your standard pork porridge. Like the liver, it is plonked at the bottom of the bowl and awaits the hot porridge cascade. The fun of it all is the mixing of the semi-liquid egg white and the runny yolk in your porridge before you finally get a yummilicious goo! I prefer to slurp the watery yolk by itself though. Oh haha if you’re a cheapskate, BYO egg from home! keke :p
And unless you completely loathe the pig, skip the Fish (they use batang fish slices here :( ) version and opt for the signature Pork Porridge (comes in a red bowl) with egg (blue bowl). The Chicken version (green bowl lol) is reliable if you feel like some shredded fowl over the pig some day.
And please God Forbid! Don’t say I didn’t warn but preesh…preesh! don’t try to be funny and attempt strange combinations like erm…. fish and pork? *pengz* and believe you would get a tasty bowl of chow. Stay close to authenticity please!!
I’ll be nice and advocate you going in the mornings coz Boss A happens to cook porridge way…way better than boss B in the afternoons and evenings. Try both versions and you’d believe me!
Nopes…if you are looking for a picture here there’s none! Coz sorries I can’t pose for porridge. Porridge is meant to be wolfed down HOT! No time lah! |
