A nice lunch
07 Jan 2013My friend and I had lunch at this restaurant. After being seated, we were given bread with an olive oil and balsamic vinegar (?) dipping. We were also asked politely for our choice of iced water or warm water. I was pleasantly surprised by the service because you know how some restaurants are, when it comes to giving out free water.
We ordered and shared the ravioli with saffron, prawn and crab, as well as the squid ink risotto with clams, squid, prawns and scallops. I am happy to say that this time I took pictures. :)
The ravioli was good. My friend and I both thought so. I felt that the taste was pleasant. I had expected it to be very rich and salty, but it was just nice. I liked the sauce very much. The prawn and crab filling was tasty too.
The squid ink risotto was interesting. There was quite a lot of seafood and my friend and I both liked it as it was flavourful. She commented that it was the blackest squid ink dish she had ever seen. Indeed, it was so black that we could not make out the seafood in the risotto. :p Overall, although I enjoyed the dish, I thought that it was a little too salty. I would recommend that if you want to try this dish and don't like salty food, share it with someone and don't eat it on your own.
The staff was very polite and a man, whom I think might be the boss, cleared our plates promptly. We didn't order dessert as we were quite full, but I definitely think that this is a place worth going back.
A little note on the menu... If I remember correctly, the menu did not have any pictures... Perhaps pictures could be printed and the fonts could be changed (different fonts for the heading and food description) so that diners will have an easier time reading it and deciding what delicious food they want to try. :)

Salty dish & mediocre service.
15 Sep 2012Today is my first visit to this place with my family.
We were ushered to the open area as indoor was full. It was quite dark out there. I could hardly see what I am eating. I need to deploy my hp flash light to have a good look at the dishes served.
First dish served was Lumache Al Forno (Large Escargots). Having read review that it is salty, I requested for less salt. But was told that all the escargots had already been marinated. The salt level cannot be adjusted. I went for it anyway. True enough, it was quite salty. Besides the herbs' taste, I could not quite taste the escargots.
2nd dish served was the Bofalo Cotto pizza (Pizza with tomato mozzarella, topped with picnic ham and buffalo mozzarella cheese). Before we could dig in, the pizza was taken away. We were told that this pizza for for another table. That's alright. It did not bother us. Lucky, we did not touch that pizza. Our pizza came in less than a minute later. It was tad too salty for my family. However, it was a still tasty.
3rd dish served was Spaghetti del Pescatore al Nero di Seppia (Spaghetti tossed with prawn, clam, scallop, squid, crayfish and mussel in squid ink). This dish wasn't salty but the spaghetti was a little hard. The boss came by and asked our opinion for this dish. We feedback the hardness of the spaghetti. He told us that it is normal for the Italian to have it a little hard. He also added that we could request for Angel's hair. But hello, we are Singaporean. Seeing a senior and a toddler at the table, the service staff could at least provide options for softer spaghetti. Points deducted for service. Taste wise, it is a fine dish, just a little salty.
Last dish was Scaloppine di Vitello al Marsala (Thin slice veal in marsala wine and mushroom sauce). Except for the mash potato which is too salty, the rest of the dish is alright.
Another observation about the service. It seems that Ang Mo get better service than local. I saw a service staff taking quite a long time explaining the menu to an Ang Mo couple. I don't see that happen to locals.
Total damage? $110. Um, may not return for a while.....unless there is a fire sale.

Quality Italian Fare
16 Jul 2012We have been regulars at Spizzico for couple of years now since we moved nearer to town. It is not a big establishment - maximum 20 indoor seats and an alfresco area that can accomodate another 20. The food quality has always been consistently good and the owner, Steven, and crew are a warm and friendly bunch. The plus plus plus point for us is that they allow BYO wine with no corkage charge everyday, 7 days a week.
Last Saturday, we made a reservation with them again to celebrate our helper's birthday.
For cold appetizer, we had Insalata Caprese - Sliced tomato with buffalo mozzarella cheese, basil, oregano and olive oil. Fresh!
They serve very good calamari fritti which we usually order for the kids but for this visit we opted for the soft shell crab for a change. The crispy and delicious fried seafood was served with a spicy tomato sauce.
All our three kids love the sautéed clam here so much that this is one dish we have never missed to order whenever we visit Spizzico. This is a simple dish but the combination of good quality olive oil, garlic, dried white wine and broth elevate the inexpensive seafood to a new level. I like it too.
We ordered different pasta dishes, which are generally good, for our mains. Wife had ravioli stuffed with fresh spinach and Ricotta cheese in pink sauce. The kids had their usual creamy Fettuccine alla Carbonara - fettuccine with bacon, parmesan cheese, light fresh cream and egg yolk. Our helper ordered their oven baked traditional Lasagna, I did not taste it but she told me it was good. And I tried their new dish recommended by Steven, Crab meat Spaghetti Aglio Olio.
The kids had Creme Brulee for dessert and Steven specially prepared a Tiramisu for my helper's birthday. That was very thoughtful of him.
We had a good time here at Spizzico.
