    Fresh food at affordable prices

    26 Dec 2010
Was there on a Saturday because I wanted to enjoy the 1-for-1 Salmon deal.

Raffles Place is an inconvenient location for me because I don't work anywhere near there. Went there specially after work with one of my colleagues.

The place was empty when we were there, it was a Saturday and I guess there are hardly any office peeps working on Saturday in Raffles Place, isn't it?

Had the undivided attention from the server and food was served promptly after ordering. Ordered 2 Salmon don and a couple of sushi. The server also refilled the green tea without asking.

The portion is big for the price ($15 per don) and generous helping of salmon! Many places I went just gave only salmon but here, they give crab meat as well! And not to mention, I really love the miso soup. My colleague wasn't very hungry so she offered me her miso soup and I finished two bowls of it even though I was very full!

What's more, with the Standard Chartered card, you'll get additional discount, the trip made there was truly worth it!

      eat and run

      15 Oct 2010
Looking for a late lunch after a meeting, an item on the special of the day, which was the salmon belly don ($17) attracted me and I decided to have my lunch here. I cannot remember the last time I had such a dish and the fattiness of salmon belly is something I cannot run away from.

A small simple setting of an eatery which was inspired by simple dining in Japan, the place has sufficient seating so one does not really have to stand to have a meal (phew!).

Down to the food, the fish was fresh but I found the rice to be a little too sticky for my liking. As for the anago sushi, the restaurant was generous with the fresh eel, as depicted in the picture attached.

All in all, a reasonably priced place for a quick lunch. And to make things sweeter, Standard Chartered members get 15% off the sushi joint here.

      Gonads... anyone?

      05 Sep 2010
Although as off-putting as the title is, the sea urchin is undoubtedly a delicacy in Japanese cuisine. Known as uni in Japanese, the edible part that you enjoy in a sushi or sashimi is actually the reproductive organs of the creature.

I had eaten uni sushi before but it's here in SSB that I had an "enlightening" experience. The first was quite a long time ago and I was downright disappointed and wondered why people would spend money to eat such a thing! It was mushy and had a distinct "fishy" taste. Honestly, it was disgusting and I'm not referring to the fact that I was eating some ovaries or testes!

Imagine my utter amazement when I gave it a go again and had a totally different impression. It was firm and tasted slightly sweet, definitely not fishy at all. So, it dawned on me that freshness is the key to good-tasting uni! Duh!

I was totally blown away by the uni sushi but everything else I ordered was extremely fresh too. Even the miso soup that came with the chirashi don was extremely flavorful. Needless to say, I'm sure to come back but alas, not to have uni sushi since it cost a bomb. However, it's money well-spent to have learnt a lesson!
