Bad Service & Average Food
Oct 18, 2009It’s my mum’s birthday dinner & we’ve 7 people going for this Thai buffet. I’ve made the booking 1 week before. The Buffet dinner was $16.90++ per person; we thought of giving a try.
However, when we entered the restaurant the greeting by the service guy was not friendly;
When we are seated, we are only given 1 set of menu to share among 7 people;
So my sis request for 6 menus to look at & for ordering as well. The service guy just put the menus on the table without handling it to all of us.
After our ordering, when the 1st dish came, the waiter just put the dish at the empty table. (We have 7 people & 1 extra seat). He should put it in the centre instead of furthers end & expect us to get our own dish rearranged. But for the next few dishes, he keep putting on the dish at the empty table; which we think he should give us that little service.
Other then service, food is just average not even a passed.
Tom Yam soup – sour not weird taste
Green Curry – worst the color is very green but no taste
Steam Fish – no taste at all
Pineapple rice – taste weird
Dessert – just average
Overall, the food is worst that having a normal / cheap Thai Restaurant. Even the neighborhood Siam Kitchen is much better.Spent about

Value for Money Thai Buffet...
Nov 3, 2008Aiya if i was to come on Mon-Thurs, the deal would be even SWEETER man!! Got promotion now. Every 4, the 4th diner eats FREE. =(
Over at Suanthai, the food are pretty much authentic and the buffet spread is wide with standard (28 dishes) and budget (23 dishes). So how to see?? One got seafood included, budget is all meat sans seafood.
Despite the wide variety, there are still some hits and misses. So the hits are
Green mango Salad
Green Curry with Beef
LaLa with Thai Chilli Paste
Pandan Wrapped Chicken
Deep Fried Squid with Butter Sauce
Boneless Stuffed Chicken Wings
The food is slightly more salty as they are supposed to go with rice so if you are not a carbo or have a big appetite, pls monitor ur rice consumption, if not, you will be too stuffed to sample the other dishes.I also recommend this place for

High Tea here is great disappointment and way below expectations!
Nov 30, 2008Date of Visit: 29 Nov 2008 (Sat)
Time of Visit: 2.15pm
Was here for the high tea on Saturday with a friend after reading from reviewers that this restaurant is 'quite good'. In fact, after our experiences here, we were very disappointed as it was way below our expectations.
We arrived at about 2.15pm and was ushered into the restaurant. Although the buffet would only start at 2.30pm, we were told that we could help ourselves with the drinks (coffee and tea) and on the dishes that were already ready. Altogether there were only 8 main dishes, which took sequence to be ready.
The 8 dishes were Fried Noodles (like mee goreng though sweeter), Fried Rice (thought it was the famous Pineapple Fried Rice but it was not but just normal fried rice), Fried Popiah (normal though not oily), Fried Vegetables (normal), Green Curry Chicken (gravy too watery and pathetically small pieces of chicken), Fried Brinjol (normal), Tom Yam Soup (ok but too spicy with the small prawns and squids and chilli padi in which my friend had choked due to the spicyness despite he could eat chilli very well) and Fish Cake (normal).
As for the dessert counter, there were red ruby with coconut cream (ok), tapioca (this was the only dish we liked as it was very sweet and tasty) and fresh fruits of water melon, papaya and honey drew. There was no kuehs or other desserts!
That's all for the high tea, though priced at about $13.00++, it was disappointing as at this price, we could go for better high tea buffet with more variety and better food (i.e. can only think of Quality and Bayview Hotels as they are similar, if we disregard those that have 1-for-1 promotions which is not a fair comparison). We felt it was not worth it and not value for money here.
As for the ambience, it was ok but a bit dark (though we were seated quite near to the windows) but we felt something was strange and funny. The restaurant played western oldies music which did not match the theme of the restaurant and decorations (with Thai paintings, lightings and also with a photo of the Thai King and Queen at the counter) as we expected some Thai music or songs.
Service wise was bad and slow despite of no crowd. Our water was not refilled automatically as we had to highlight the waiter each time before they would come over to refill.
Making things worst, we were only given one plate to fill our food and have to 'reuse and recycle' it. This was absurb as it was the very first time we have ever encountered such 'unusual' practice (maybe with this policy, staff will have lesser plates to wash or wanted to save money for the detergents!!!). Only the desserts have some bowls and small plates for you to take and use.
At about 4 plus, even before we had finished eating, the waiter cleared our 'one and only' plates leaving us with no plates to refill our food!!!
There were only about 4-5 tables occupied during our meal there. Although the buffet would end only at 5.30pm as we were told by the waitress who attended to us at the entrance (which later we were told again that it would end at 5pm), at about 4.40pm, the waiters had already given us the look to 'want us to leave soon'...
Overall, our experience here was very disappointing and below our expectations as we felt it would be good following many positive reviews here.
In addition, we did not come here with a high expectation or expect to be served good or expensive food but at least to have a more decent spread and a few more dishes but it failed us. Also the 'weird' one plate 'policy' and poor service were 'eye opening' experience for us!
Don't think we will ever come back here again unless they can do something to improve immediately to regain our and public's confidence! (Sigh)Spent about

Disappointing Lunch
Nov 16, 2009Decent ambience. Services leaves much to desire though. Although there were several servers hanging out at the bar-counter, only 1 guy really takes orders. Dishes were extremely slow to serve and some orders were even forgotten. When we first got there, the server did not give us enough menus and there was only 1 buffet menu for all of us to share.
We went for the $13.90 budget buffet. The dishes were all very oily. The steamed fish fillet with soy sauce was literally steamed fillet topped with soy sauce. I've been to restaurants considered fusion, fine dining, cheap eats etc. None has ever served such a horrible dish before. This is a first.
The breaded fish fillets used in curries and stir-fry dishes had so much breading on them, it's hard to tell there's any real fish inside of it.
I'm a firm believer of buffets being the showcase of a restaurant's quality dishes. If they can't even get buffet right, why would customers want to spend the extra $ to get ala carte items?
I would recommend this place for a large group only because the restaurant won't hurry you along and that there aren't that many patrons anyway.I also recommend this place for

Be more generous with e one-time orders?
May 18, 2009Suanthai offers Thai buffet in a building crammed with Japanese dining is a refreshing change for those who wana steer away from e ramens n bentos... Interestingly there's 2 buffet ala-carte options.. the standard (28 dishes) and the budget (23 dishes) with e standard ofering seafood items such as seafood tom yum.. fish maw soup n thai chiili lala etc.. There's also free flow of iced tea @ $1.99 n free flow pineapple rice @ $1.50..
We started with e salads and e green mango salad is a hit while e pomelo salad is not.. e green mango salad is quite tangy n appetizing n is a great starter as well as a pick up esp when e meal gets a tad jielat later on..e pomelo is quite off n pales in comparison to e green mango.. We also liked e thai fish cakes which is quite a delight n can b on par with those i had in bangkok.. we had seconds!
Next up r e soups.. e tom yum seafood comes in e clear version which i liked but sadly it's way too spicy.. i lurvve spicy but i'm strongly against food being way too spicy since e only taste is juz spicy n would totally missed out e other flavours.. however my friends had a great time finishing n sweating off e tom yum! but to me spicy does not equal authentic so nah! e fish maw soup is nice though... thick n tasty.. i would gladly trade my tomyum seafood for another fish maw soup!
Some of the more memorable dishes we had r e thai style chicken satay which is nicely marinated and is very juicy n tasty.. e chicken with basil leaves is alwaz a fave of mine so i'm biased towards this dish.. goes great with rice so yummy but not e yummiest i had.. e boneless stuffed chicken wings r alrite but a tad oily.. so is e green curry chicken.. e curry itself is quite alrite but i do not really fancy e chicken pieces in it so i do suggest green curry beef though.. e lala thai chilli sauce is decent but nothing to shout about...e deep fried squid in butter sauce is ok-ok but it brings a different flavour to e table.. e chicken wrapped in pandan leaf is not bad since e chicken is infused with pandan flavour ..
Not really a fan of e fish dishes esp since e deep fried fish fillet with lemongrass n chilli was soooooooo sour that all our faces went into spasms! The desserts seems alrite n e coconut milk is actually quite fragrance but i'm not a dessert fan so i shan't comment..
Overall it's not a bad place for gatherings due to e ambience.. however e standard is quite decent but not great.. At about $25/pax (weekend dinner px)it's not exactly e cheapest Thai fare around but becoz it's buffet so i guessed aint very expensive as well?
However i totally disagree with e one-time orders since it applies to like 5 out of the 28 dishes and not to mention e portions r really teeny weeny to start with.. one miserable small stick of chicken satay or a mini bowl of tom yum seafood n u can only have one.. After deducting e steamed rice n salads n desserts n fruits .. e selection of items r greatly reduced.. n i gona say most of e tasty dishes r from e one-time orders n e rest r juz mediocre..
Come to think of it.. paying $75 for 3 pax seems a tad high since we can easily have a better meal elsewhere? That said.. its still not a bad place for gatherings since it's ala carte buffet n no one's trying to rush u off!Must Tries

Worth a Try!
Apr 16, 2009I had a hi-tea buffet last Saturday with 2 friends and my overall experience was pretty good. Only thing I find they tends to put too much sauce (e.g the black pepper beef, beef is very tender & juicy but personally i find the black pepper way too overpowering).
GREEN MANGO SALAD } both salad is not bad but
POMELO SALAD } nothing to shout about
THAI SPRING ROLL - i find it so so
THAI FISH CAKE - Its GOOD!
TOM YAM SOUP WITH CHICKEN - I like the soup & spicy clear soup
BEEF WITH BLACK PEPPER SAUCE - beef is v tender but too much sauce
GREEN CURRY WITH CHICKEN - its pretty good
‘PANANG’ CURRY WITH SLICE FISH FILET - i quite enjoy this dish
THAI STYLE CHICKEN SATAY -
CHICKEN WRAPPED IN PANDAN LEAF - mine was pretty dry whereas my bf said his simply melted in his mouth.
CHICKEN WITH BASIL LEAVES - its delicious esp the basil.
THAI BABY KAI LAN WITH SALTED FISH - pretty good
STEAMED RICE - i'm surprised their rice is pretty moist & fragrant. Goes so well with the green curry, pahang or other sauce.
Service is very good. The waiter never fail to refill our jug of water once he notice its running low.
I quite enjoyed the warm & cosy ambience that Suanthai create in their restaurant.
Overall, I pretty enjoyed my lunch and will wana go back and check out other dishes which I have not try again.
Hi Tea (11.30am - 3pm) $13.80++ (wet tissue charge @ $0.30). Each person paid $16.60 which I find is very worth it.I also recommend this place for

A well-priced and decent Thai Buffet...
Oct 23, 200819th OCT 2008
Initially, I was planning to introduce the family to one of my favourite Japanese joint at Robertson Quay for lunch... Alas, it rained heavily and in the end, to protect my baby niece from the downpour, we opted to go some place where it is fully sheltered - Liang Court.
Located at the basement of Liang Court lies a few restaurants and one of them was Suanthai. For the weekend, Suanthai was offering a special high-tea buffet (2:30pm - 5:00pm) consisting of 15 dishes. However, what made us went ahead with Suanthai was the fact that the waitress notified us that we could actually start immediately (even though the time then was only 1:45pm). Awesome!
Stepping in, Suanthai was nicely deco'ed, dimly lit, with a soothing 70s-80s music running in the background. The interior is very spacious and is baby-tram (and probably wheel-chair) friendly.
Extrapolating from their ala carte buffet menu and from my failing memory, I think we had a choice of the following: Green Mango Salad / Deep Fried Thai Sesame Prawn Cakes / Rice Cake with Special Thai Sauce / Tom Yam Soup with Chicken / Olive Rice / Stir Fried Tung Hoon - Thai Style / Green Curry with Chicken / Deep Friend Chicken Drumlettes (which was later replaced by Chicken strips with Basil Leaves) / Thai Spring Roll / Thai Fish Balls / Stir Fried Mixed Vegetable with Oyster Sause / Stir Fried Samal Long Beans (which was later replaced by Thai Baby Kai Lan.)
The Buffet Dessert table has a nice selection of Chendol with Thai Red Ruby / Tapioca with Coconut Milk / Mixed Fruits Platter. Free flow of Coffee and Tea was also available.
To me, the quality of the spread on offer was rather good considering it cost $12.80++ per head. There were actually quite a few shining stars out of this lot which included the Olive Rice, stir-fried Tung Hoon, Green Curry Chicken and their various vegetables. Their fried stuffs were pretty decent too and more importantly, not too oily! The dessert was nice too, although their tapioca was a little too hard for my liking. A notable mention about their coffee and tea... they were actually pretty good... At least good enough for me to go back for seconds and thirds!
I really think for $12.80++, it is indeed a buffet worth going to.Must Tries

Variety in the Buffett
May 21, 2008The last reviewer put it well to suggest going for the a la carte buffett as they serve it in small portions and hence provides one with the ability to try many of the chef's cooking.
I arrived in time for the last order, which meant that I had only one opportunity to order from the buffett menu so I just picked a couple of dishes that I wanted to try - and the restaurant was kind enough to throw in a couple of other dishes that they "felt" I should try (its better than than thinking that they were just giving me leftovers since they were about to close anyways).
The ambience is a dark setting with a couple of images that is very typical of a Thai mid to high end set up. Down to the food, there were no particular dishes that stood out but most of it were pretty acceptable. Some, like the Green Curry Chicken or Beef and the Tom Yum Soup were more spicy than I anticipated but I guess this adds to the authencity of the food.
I enjoyed the chicken dishes such as the fried chicken wing and the chicken wrapped in pandan leaves. Tasty but certainly high in the oil content as well. Avoid the fish dishes as they tend to come up a little bland.
The Kai Lan with rice is a good dish to end the meal after all the heavy spicy and somewhat oilier items. I generally enjoyed the meal and hope to come back again when I have more time to savour the food and try out the other dishes.Must Tries
