  1. Never be a greed

    May 21, 2009
I heard about HGW website is a hit recently so I decided to join in as a member to write some reviews on good restaurants I have been.
As to say, I witnessed some unfair incidents , I just felt a need to breathe it out as a Singaporean.

I went dining at this restaurant with my family after reading all the good reviews. The flow of their service and food quality was quite the same as what others have reviewed.
In the midst of our dining, I heard a gentleman next table to us questioning a staff with an angry face why was his coke filled up with so much ice and that cost $4?
The staff replied "THANK YOU for your feedback" and left. A moment later, she came back with a fresh glass of coke smiled and greeted that was a compliment from the shop. Never did I hear the gentleman was happy or shy upon his request, he just sipped and sipped into his drink and carried on his meal.

For this action reacted by the management & team of this restaurant, I wanted to rate their service as 10 because I have not yet seen the same amount of genouristy from any shops who does this and never did the staff give faces to the customer. I feel there are Singaporeans out there trying to take advantage or make a hard life for service people.

I reconised good services is a rare these days in Singapore, and I am here to cheer for those who are in this business, carry on your good work and SMILES for your customers!

    • Great service & good food !

      Apr 14, 2009
My group of party friends wanted to surprise me by organizing an early birthday celebration this april for me. I didn't know this place at all till they brought me here. We had reservation for 10 of us and the tables and all were already set when we arrived.
Most of us do not know what we have to order so the waitress came to explain and given us the option to cook ourselves or get the chef to prepare even we were seated on their level 2, that says, customers to cook on their own. Some of us wanted to cook on their own but afew of us wanted the chef to prepare. Usually on busy hour at 7pm on a Saturaday, restaurants staff or owner would not even care, they will want us to follow their rules and regulation, I find it amazing the staff had the initiative to check with her boss and ensure us they will prepare the way we wanted to be, also it's our first time there, they should "educate" us on to cook ourselves, pretty impressive with they way they handled customers! ; )
About the food, like some Japanese food I have tried, comes with Tempura, Teppanyaki etc. This Sumomo restaurant created something more than just a Okonomiyaki house, reason is to cater to different customers' needs. It gaves us more variety to choose rather than just okonomiyaki. Overall, my group likes the food and the great service this restaurant has provide!
Thumbs up for their great effort and I will definately go back when our next gathering is near! Cheers!

      • Great hangouts for Japanese food lovers

        Jul 2, 2009
I kept hearing my friends wanted to go this restaurant.
I don't know where Prinsep street was till we went.
It was a surprise when we heard we can cook our own in this little inn.
We made reservation and was addressed by the svc staff upon arrival, great impact that we were "kids" but addressed us like adults, felt great. Service overall was alittle slow but timely delivery on our orders, it was full house on a Monday night though.

        Food choices, my fave:
        1) Yakisoba ( All mixed), it was such a well-blended taste, it's my first time but I never forget, the mixture of the mayonnaise and sauces were just nicely done! Not too much but right portion for a personal consumption.
        2) Hotplate with Tsukune (chicken tender meat): it was explained by the waitress it's tigh meat with a fresh egg added on top. Can't imagine this but when it was served, oh mine! It was delicious! I've tried those in other jap shops, it's like yakitori style, but this is big! Alittle saulty so it's best goes with plain rice.

The side orders we ordered were all tasty and nice. Will surely return for more good food and I like the embience that is with great music!

        1. Disappointed over meal....

          Dec 23, 2009
initially quite excited to read about this place...went to hunt this afternoon for a change.

to be frank, the location is definitely ideal ...strategically located.
          however

the meal was definitely not up to my expectation.....perhaps we went during off-lunch hour.

the curry rice ordered was not good...maybe i love to compared with the authentic one.
the sashimi set lunch was all of salmon...which usually should be a mixed platter.
worst of all....i visited sumomo basically to recollect my fond memories of a similar setting back in tokyo...so i ordered the okonomiyaki.
zannen.....they gave me a ready cooked okonomiyaki when i was so eager to diy on our own.

might be back again to diy someday.....perhaps

          • Super Sumomo

            Aug 22, 2009
Our Friday ritual - good movie and a sumptuous dinner. As it turned out, movie was just so so but dinner was our saving grace!

We ended up at Sumomo, a Japanese pancake (D.I.Y style) eatery. From the outside, it looks like any other Jap restaurants but the friendly staff usher us in to give it a try.

Upon their recommendation, we ordered Tsukune ($18), it's like chicken patti with a fresh egg top nicely in the center and served in a sizzling hotplate. Matching it with their fragrant Japanese rice is simply magical. According to the owner, the dish is only available at Sumomo because other restaurants do it in Yakitori style, which is rather ordinary.

Try the Nabe-soup with meat balls and vegetables too. It's veg and tofu ingredients make it taste sweet, best of all, there is no MSG!

Personally, i never fail to order my favorite Tempura. As a rule of thumb, if a Jap restaurant offers good quality Tempura, it spells good standards. I ordered the Ebi tempura, it's freshly
fried upon order, which makes it soft and crispy, yummy!!!!

Another pleasant surprise - they have good discounts for their alcohol. Beer goes for $6 per mug for tiger draft. Sweet Sake, $20 for 240ml at 11% alcohol, suitable for ladies.

Overall, i must say Sumomo is a unique establishment that provides good experience to diners. And yes, we will go back again, hopefully, their booze will be even cheaper :)

            • Nice .... but Limited Value

              Aug 16, 2009
My family decided to try out Sumomo after my daughter read raving reviews on this authentic Japanese outlet. We were their first customer when we arrived at noon today. We were seated on 2nd level of the shophouse while the service counter and kitchen are on the ground level. Environment unique but my kids thought it was kind of plain & warm.

              We ordered the following:
              (1) Cold Somen
              (2) Okonomiyaki (All Mixed)
              (3) Yakisoba (All Mixed)
              (4) Nabe (Chicken Balls in Soup)
              (5) Grilled Sweet Corn

We all like the Cold Somen. The thin noodles tastes great with the ice-cold dressing sauce.

We were given a bowl of cold ready mix to spread on the electric plate to prepare the Okonomiyaki. Task complete with ease & result was good, authentic Japanese tasting Okonomiyaki. Tasty ... alas, the portion was small for $18.

Yakisoba is tasty mix of noodles with seafood, chicken & egg. It has a refreshing citrus fruit taste and it would have been perfect if less saltish.

Nabe is let-down. Before I could taste the soup, the strong mix of pepper & sesame oil smell already put me off. Then the taste test confirm the disaster. The taste also carry a funny sweetness. Basically, it was a weird mix of sweetness, pepper, sesame & soy sauce taste. Chicken balls was bland and dry in texture. None of us finish the soup.

Grilled Sweet Corn was glazed with Okonomiyaki sauce. The taste was pleasant... just not sure it worth the $8 price tag.

Kids said they hope to return for more okonomiyaki, but Laoye was pretty determined that he won't return as he didn't find justifiable value. As for me ... er... if depends on who picks the tab... Hahaha!

                Aug 2, 2009
Recently been to this place situated at Prinsep street which is behind the Cathay theatre, never been there my whole life in Singapore!

Learnt from friends they offer an option to cook yourself so kinda interest me to try it with friends.
I tried to cook the pancake (okono-miyaki) as instructed and followed by guidance from the lady in shop. Quite cool, unqiue tasting.
They imported a cold sake which is great tasting too.
Price wise it's not low but we got a 10% discount off the bill of $60, they mentioned it's a ladies nite on all wednesdays.

I am not sure when I will return again for okonomiyaki but surely love to try out their other dishes, I like some of the side dishes like the fried beef steak, which I can eat it everyday.

                • A place for okonomiyaki lovers

                  Jul 18, 2009
With all the reviews I read under okonomiyaki shops, tried myself in other stores, this is where I feel the best. (you may not agree till you tried it all)
In terms of pricing, can't compare with local food chain stores, you can find it elsewhere for $5 but it's not the same taste.
At $24 for Modan yaki in this shop, my Japanese friend explaint is reasonable & taste the Japanese standard in Hiroshima.
Though Singaporeans are here to compare the prices and complaint it's expensive, you have to weigh the quality with what you get.

All in all, worth while for me to go back again and again whenever I grave for okonomiyaki and Takoyaki. My Japanese clients whom I brought them there agreed with me.

Service is better than food, that is to what I feel when they have enough hands.

                  • Unique tasting & great services!

                    Jul 13, 2009
Running out of new places to go for lunch, checked out in the web and walk-in last weekend.
I don't have knowledge at all about what O-ko-no-mi-ya-ki is all about but thinking even though i get disappointment, it will only be once.

When we arrived, it was almost over for lunch (they closed at 3pm)
but the owner was willing to serve us unlike most restuarants,
they insist their way. Plus point.
Before we asked the usual questions, we were all informed well what they have in the shop and even guide us patiently about how to cook okonomiyaki. After showing us how to cook and with the instructions,
the owner helped us even to top our sauce and etc.

I worked in restaurants during my teens, I am always impressed
with people who provide good services and that made all my
friends like this lady boss very well. She made us feel like friends.

                    Food wise, I won't say it's fantastic, because I don't
really appreciate okonomiyaki, but they have other choices of Japanese food which I like better. Such as their Somen, light yet filling, the dessert, green tea cake was fabulous. Price, decent but don't expect it to be cheap.

My advice: don't expect heaven and earth when you get to this place, the food choices are decent, for a change, worth to try it.
For service, thumbs up as it's really rare to see shop owner
serve customers with genuine smiles and mades you feel important.

                    • I simply like it

                      Jul 12, 2009
I read the whole lot of good things & bad comments about this place but must give a shot to try no matter what opinions I would have.

I like their okonomiyaki best, really good and taste original. Though okonomiyaki cannot be taken for meal everyday as a chinese, for more Japanese food variety, they have a decent selection for lunches and dinners as well. I also like other of their menu with assorted different types of side dishes such as Nabe, tsukune, tempura, sashimi, soba and even tepanyaki etc can be found here. As for value, it's not the lowest but reasonable.

A place whereby I can have a date, friends and office staff gatherings all in one. I just simply like it.

p/s. To avoid disappointment, this place is definatly not for teenagers and not for those who are comparing with the cheap local Japanese sushi bar value.

Upon reading the good review in HGW, I made a trip there with my gal friends sometime ago. Upon arrival on a weekend peak time (abt 8pm), we noted we are only their 2nd customer. That makes us think whether we made the right choice.

We ordered few dishes included the famous okonomiyaki. The food came. It was just Ok. Nothing to shout about.

To my opinion, the food is too expensive and not worth for money. The mixed okonomiyaki is priced at $18. Mixed ingredient suppose to include squid, prawn and pork and etc. It was cut so small and so little that I hardly noticed much.

With the same price I paid for a dinner, I normally can get a very satisfied meal in other decent jap restaurant with much food choices.

                          • Taste of REAL okonomiyaki from Japan!

                            Jun 27, 2009
ok...I have read all the reviews and like others, just wanted to try new food all the time. As to write a review I'd care-less most of the time because I have got better things to do. Just wanted to join in the club after reading some funny reviews, thought I could rise my opinion.
I have lived in Japan for a good 2 years during my high school to pick up the language and to expereince Japanese culture.
I worked as a helper in an Okonomiyaki shop so I can totally understand the standard of preparation and the procedure of doing it. Since I moved to Singapore, I have not found a place that is close to the taste I tried. (oops, there are, prices not matching with the serving, perhaps what cost most in Singapore is the rental and the set up that we consumers are paying for - accept the fact, this is Singapore!) I been to this shop a couple of times on weekdays and weekends as well. Weekdays are cosy, less crowd but weekends are packed. The food standard is excellent- I fall in love with their Tsukune, comes with quite a big portion with a fresh egg floats on top. We were told to grill it alittle when served in a hotplate. Totally captures my appetide.
Okonomiyaki- Too much is too filling, the ingredients are just nice! Lot's of cabbage which I love!!!!!!!!!!!!! The do-it-yourself part is a gimmick, but it's totally cool because we don't get to cook ourselves anywhere with the same price we are paying for.
Desserts- Yummy! I love the green tea cheese cake, never can beat anything else I eat as a cake so far! (unbelievable? try it yourself)
Japanese taste- I won't say it's 100%, but close to. I checked out for those who are curious, the bosses are pure Japanese who run the business, so this made me have confident in a Japanese restaurant.
I do not understand why there are so many reveiws about this shop but not the rest of okonomiyaki shops. It left me with an answer humans are just curious creatures. And bound to have some good and bad comments. But I find it strange when I feel the service is more than just o.k yet consumers are complaining and demanding for more.
Perhaps human, just spare a thought and be fair with your judgements, I thought this shop is pretty up to standard.
