I arrived at Sunday Folks at 8.34pm on a Sunday night. Just like everyone else, I keyed in my number into the iPad system and received a message telling me there were 12 tables before me, which is fine. I waited close to half an hour while seated at the benches outside. At 9 pm, almost every other person around the waiting area got their seats. Thinking it's afterall 12 tables before my turn, I continued to wait patiently.
Then, a group of 5 passers-by came and wanted to key their number into the system, but it prompted that it was full. At this point, service person A came out, asked if she could be of help and to my horror, brought them straight in! At this point, I was baffled so I walked into the restaurant to clarify. When I asked her why I waited so long for my turn when there were tables available she brushed my question aside with a vague answer and quickly directed me to a table for two. Two minutes later, I received a call from the restaurant telling me that it was my turn in line. This goes to show that she seated me (and the earlier party of 5) without considering the people on the waiting list.Doesn't this mean that anyone can walk in and get a seat instead of following the queue system?
After which, we ordered two cups of ice cream at 9.07pm. Thinking it's just ice cream and no waffle, it shouldn't take too long but we were so wrong. At 9.30pm, we were wondering what went wrong exactly. Every other table seated after and around us received their orders, even those with waffles(which takes time to prepare). So when we asked one of the staff to check, one soon came with a cup of ice cream. A couple of minutes later, we prompted the staff on our other order. Five minutes later, the manager came out to tell us that they had problems with their chocolate ice cream machine, hence the delay in our order. He was very polite, that's one, but he didn't realise that the other tables after us were served the chocolate ice cream by every other staff that could have been ours. He was very apologetic about the issue, refunded us and even wanted to offer us an alternative on the house. Seeing that he was sincere about it, we didn't want to put him in a spot. This review is meant to reflect on the bad service of the staff, but the manager was the only redeeming factor of the entire experience.
It's okay to wait for food when everyone else is waiting IN LINE, but not okay when the queue is jumbled up and food items are not served on a first-come-first-serve basis. The desserts might be nice, but I think this is enough an experience to deter me from this place for a long time.
