The hidden find of Singapore
Jul 3, 2007So the legend goes that Jerry, a retired aeronautical enginner, decides to start up a texan bbq, all american restaurant, and creatively calls it, yes you guessed it, Jerry's. After a few years, the chain becomes so successful, he sells it off, and then sets up a new restaurant at Andrew's road, called buckeroos. This also becomes successful, so he sells that one off, and then decides, you know this time, I'm going to put my restaurant so far off the grid, nobody's going to find me.
We'll they keep on finding him, and they keep on driving the lengths of Singapore to eat at this place. This is one of my favourite places. Its a place which, after a while, pops back into your mind as a place to come and visit to eat. The anticipation then becomes the first part of the fun, when you drive to seletar airbase, head up to the end of seletar airbase.....
then turn down a small slip road to drive AROUND the army base.....
then drive through the golf course .......
then drive through the airplane hangers .......
And by this time, all your guests are thinking, he's turned into a chainsaw murderer cos there can't be a restaurant out there.... and you park next to the end of the seletar airbase airstrip.....
And you finally reach the mecca of American bbq food.
The food is undoubtably great. The standard Jerry's meal would be his hot buffalo wings, ribs, a salad and lots of beer. The rest of his food is well executed, but the real prize is his buffalo wings, because man are they hot! Jerry can dial these things in to level of hotness, from level 0 to level 10. If you are an amateur, please do not go above level 3, cos they will kill you already. I've been eating at this place for years now and I still don't go above level 3.
Well with that said, say hi to Jerry, and you will meet someone with one of the biggest hearts on this earth. Needless to say, he still says he does not want anyone to know about his place, and rightly so, I'm not going to give you any more directions to this place less all you web crawling food fanatics crowd his place and I can't get a reservation anymore.
If you want to know where this place is, you'll just have to work for your dinner.Must Tries

Fly aeroplanes
May 19, 2008That's exactly what you can do at Seletar if you want to get a probational pilot's license (PPL). If not, you can choose to steer clear of those pilot lingos (Mayday, Pancall etc etc) and sit down, relax and watch pilot wannabe taking off in the cute Cessnas, which I did.
Hell of a place to get to. Located at the East Camp, superb navigation and track-gripping maneuvers are needed to reach destination Sunset Grill for Mission: Dinner. It does not help that the co-pilot by my side gave this pilot 'hollanded' instructions and we ended up at West Camp instead (no MayDay, just need GPS). Somemore track grinding later, we finally reached Sunset ready for our mission.
It was near dusk when we arrived, the sun slowly setting in, giving a nice hue and a certain romanticness about the place. Many tables were already filled with those empty ones placed with a 'Reserved' tag. Luckily the mission leader (me) called in advance to RESERVE a nice corner for us to sit down and relac. Food are the normal American fare that even the oldest war veteran would be proud of. Between the 2 of us, we gunned down the Fish n Chips and Pork Ribs. The appetizing clam chowder served to subdue our hunger for kills before the agonising wait for the mains (almost 30min to be exact). Several tables were all having a tough one-on-one with the Hot Wings from Buffalo. You may wish to progressively upgrade your levels or jump straight into the dogfight at level 10!
With 1.5 kills between the 2 of us, we went back satisfied with our mission success.I also recommend this place for

fantastic sunset view
Apr 30, 2009deep inside the old Seletar Airbase is Sunset Grill, a real hidden gem. Google Earth: 1°24'57.70"N, 103°52'17.40"E
if you've never been, it's not easy to find. even cabbies who've never been get lost going around Seletar in circles. streetdirectories online, including SLA's map.gov.sg, don't reflect the new roads.
directions are at the end of the review ...
this used to be a simple snack bar, a canteen for the SIA flying college and youth flying club pilots and others in the area of East Camp. about three years ago, it became Sunset Grill with a full menu. it's still housed in the Singapore Flying Club building, but has no affiliation with it. I've two brothers flying with SQ, and my parents have fond memories of chilling at this snack bar watching them fly as cadets. brought them there, they loved it.
the hours vary quite a bit day to day, call them to find out.
*****
FOOD:
quite normal. western fare, chicken chops steaks and buffalo wings. there's even wagyu steak on the menu at over $50, mains are about $20. the famous buffalo wings are pricey, half dozen at around $20, and the gimmick is the spiciness: levels 1 to 10, all in increments of 50 cents for each half dozen. the fish and chips were good, very sizable serving. my brother asked for his steak rare but it came medium, they did a new one -- like in most places here in Singapore, you gotta ask for it bloody if you want rare, rare if you want medium. next time, will tell the waiter specifically: 15 secs on either side, no more.
AMBIENCE:
superb. best if you get there 6.30pm to watch the sunset, hence the name. it's fantastic. the place looks west out over the airstrip, watching the sun go down over the hangars in the distance is breath-taking. the alfresco area is really the only place to sit, indoors is just a bit twee. and no worries about mosquitoes, the restaurant helpfully places mosquito coils under the tables. and just getting to the place, driving past the Lear Jets, Cessnas and Pipers is an experience in itself.
VALUE:
not that cheap, but you're paying for the ambience of course.
SERVICE:
attentive, polite, homely. the waiter who served us was eager to please. the steak issue was handled fine, no balking on their part.
*****
DIRECTIONS:
the old main entrance to the airbase is at the northern end of Jalan Kayu near the TPE expressway. just inside the entrance, which no longer has sentries, is a roundabout. don't take the first two turnoffs, go straight along Picadilly, who will see an abandoned driving range on the right, and pass the Orientus "resort" on the left. the road ends at the new security checkpoint, and there is a huge carpark on the left of that. go around the car park, turning left from Picadilly and then 30 metres down turn right, 30 metres more you will come to at T-junction, the road is Old Birdcage Walk. turn right and left, you will come to this steep slope, a road's been built to run over a fairway of the abandoned golf course. down the slope, take the next right where the sign says "East Camp". go all the way in to the end of the hangars, past the planes. the runway is on the left of all this, Sunset is just at the edge next to the fence. at night, just look out for the fairylights.

Way overpriced
Feb 4, 2010This place is so over-rated. Service was ok but food was below average, most importantly OVERPRICED. Couldn't remember the exact pricing for each item, but total bill amounted to $70.
Buffalo wings isn't all that fantastic. We had level 1, it was mildly spiced, acceptable if you can't take spicy food, however wings weren't well marinated, cost nearly $18 for half a dozen
We ordered 3 main courses, fish and chips, pork chops and beef lasagne
Fish and chips - bad, stale frozen fish with horrible batter that separates from the fish.
Pork chops - very small portion and pork isn't fresh, tasted like it has been sitting in the fridge for more than a week.
Beef lasagne - it was ok because of the large amount of melted mozerella cheese, however portion's really small, they're rather stingy with the layers of minced beef, you can't really taste any meat in it.
Not much ambience too, it just look like your regular coffee shop with lots of mosquitoes. Don't take the indoor seatings, the area stink.

a horrible experience
Feb 1, 2010I am don't usually write food reviews, but i thought i should highlight the bad experience i have in sunset grill. The ambiance is pretty rustic, a alternative surrounding and a eye opener. However, the food is pretty terrible here.
We went in a group of 10 and order the buffalo wings. Its normal and not fantastic. BUT highly overpriced. Followed on with the mains, my friends ordered the pork chops and it was the toughest meat ever. We ask politely for a change, the waiter refused flatly saying its like that and because it is frozen rudely. The fish burger i ate smells bad and badly fried.
I think the price is too hefty for food here. I recommend not going as you will be disappointed.I also recommend this place for

Super ulu place
Dec 31, 2009Finally found this super ulu place after a 2nd attempt. Tried to go there the previous week but ended up having to change location as we could not find it. So after searching for direction online, we finally got to our destination.
Got ourselves a table even thou we did not make any reservation. One word: 'Stink' as it was just right beside a sewage panel and occasionally you can smell the stinking stench. Surrounding was lit with mosquito coil but we still feel the mosquitoes around. Was super irritated. Anyway, the setting and surrounding was rather shabby and really disappointed us.
Can't really remembered what main course we ordered but definitely ordered the Buffalo wings as it was the must try and our main objective there. Tried the level 3 as this is the first time we went and was warned by my friends who tried level 10. Level 3 was already spicy so for people who cannot take spiciness, do not attempt cos my friend was speechless after trying it.
The main course was still quite alright and pricing was considered abit steep. Main course took quite a long time to arrive after ordering.
Will probably not go back again since it was not up to our expectation and way too far and remote. Definitely not recommended for couples looking for a romantic dinner. And no way you can go in without your own transport. The road leading to the place was totally dark. Consider Buckaroo instead of here since the price and food range served are almost identical and you can get to Buckaroo by bus.I also recommend this place for

Spicy Buffalo Wings
Dec 8, 2009The place is preety hard to find and we got lost going around the area for about 15-20 mins. Fastest way to figure out is just call the restaurant.
The foods are not superb but they have very interesting concept on their buffalo wings putting Levels on the spicyness (Level 1-10).
Should try the buffalo wings and Giant Button Mushrooms as appetizer as they are preety unique. I would say Level 5 is already spicy enough.
The place looks cheap and the restroom is preety dirty. Not a suitable place for dating, more suitable for ppl who want to try new things.Must Tries

Nov 9, 2009decided to give it a try.. seriously there's no way you don't get lost the first time. Finally after a longggggg search managed to make it there. tried the buffalo wings and pork chop. the pork chop was good but buffalo wings were overated in my opinions. love the ambience though. the place is nice. you would never expect to see a place like this out of nowhere.Spent about

Only place for buffalo wings?
Nov 9, 2009If you manage to find this place (it really is out in the middle of nowhere with no sign posts) try their wings. The spice level ranges from 0-10 with a "secret" level 30 reserved for the truly adventurous. Our group made it up to 5, which was already quite hot yet still edible. But otherwise, the rest of our meal was so-so.
Highlights included the prompt and friendly staff and the novelty of finding buffalo wings in Singapore.
However, the questionably high prices for wings, flies everywhere, and the ulu location make for a less than memorable experience.Must Tries

In a Grill in a land far far away...
Oct 28, 2009Sifting through my digi cam, I chanced upon some photos I had taken during a dinner at Sunset Grill a few months back. Onto why I hadn't reviewed it then, reason being I forgot...which pretty much sums up what Sunset Grill's food is all about; forgettable.
The drive there was simply excruciating without a GPS and this was the first time I felt the need to use a high beam in Singapore. There were no street lights at some junctures so it was hard to discern the road.
Being a grill and pub, I imagined that their grills would be good so my party ordered the ribeye steak(medium rare), lamp chops, a rack of ribs, 2 different types of burgers and the highly anticipated buffalo wings(1 dozen at spice level-2 and another dozen at level-4).
Apart from the interminable waiting time of round 40 minutes(which I don't blame the staff since they did warn us), the food was pretty bad.
The steak and ribs were tough and overcooked with sauces that were not complementary. The burgers was alright though it got a tad dry and boring after a while. The lamb was about the best thing there but was still barely passable. As for the buffalo wings, the taste is pretty one dimensional; sour and really spicy. Spice level 2 was as far as I could go without tearing too badly(I did eat one at level 4 which was a big boo boo. I ended up with bloody stools for the next 3 days, no joke).
A dinner here will set you back around 30+ bucks excluding drinks which is slightly pricey given the quality of the food.
I like the service staff here though. They are mostly foreigners from cool places in asia like nepal and are pretty friendly. Yeah, their English might be as good as Ris Low's but hey, as long as they manage to put smiles on our faces and brighten our day right?
There also seems to be a nice view of the sunset(hence the restaurant name duh) at the al fresco area amidst the swarms of houseflies.I also recommend this place for

hot Hot HOT buffalo wings
Oct 20, 2009Was there over this Deepavali weekend. No doubt that this is a super secluded restaurant tucked away at the very end of Seletar Camp. Will be fun for foodies who like to drive around in seek of hidden finds.
Diners will enjoy the beautiful sunset against the silhouette of aircrafts as the sky changes into hues of intense red and orange.
The hot fav item is the buffalo wings (level 1 to 10). I strongly recommend people who can't take spicy stuff to NOT venture beyond Level 2. Level 5 & above are meant for daredevils all ready to BURN their tongue!
* I tried level 3 and it felt like eating chilli padi... (-_-)"...
so imagine the intensity for level 10 yea?
One minus point would be the horde of houseflies buzzing around the alfresco area, so DO cover your beer and keep one hand busy fanning the flies away as you indulge into your juicy wings.
Overall, the service staff were friendly and i liked the laid back feel of the whole place. Great for chillouts.Must Tries
