It's the Journey, not the Destination
I've always wanted to go there, ever since I heard of the place. Known more for it's rustic feel and spicy buffalo wings which ranges from level 1 - 10, this out of place restaurant is located deep in Seletar Camp.
After a brief 'research' on the internet on it's exact whereabouts and directions, i headed for it... For a brief moment, I thought I might just not be able to find it and settle for another cafe/restaurant which was there (Beavers).
Nonetheless, after a couple of minutes of aimless exploration, we were there!
Beyond the residential areas of the Seletar community, laid the huge service hangars, administrative buildings and what-nots.
Very unSingapore-like. Anyways, the restaurant is very near the Singapore Flying Club.
A map of it's location is given on their menu, which i felt was ironic... Why do i need the map when I'm already there?
So we sat in front of the runway near the flying school to enjoy the sunset and occasional aircraft movement at the runway. Our order of Fried Button Mushrooms came soon, piping hot and oily.
Seriously oily. Otherwise alright. You could see a layer of oil at the bottom of the basket, why can't they just lay it on a paper towel first before serving?
After another 30 minutes or so, our main course finally arrived. We had Fish & Chips & BLT Sandwich (Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato). Not the best of food I've tasted so far, but i shall still pass it because of the country ambiance attached. The fish & chips tasted average, and while my BLT sandwich was even more average. The toasted bread looks like it's from Sunshine, and no special sauces in it to make my taste buds tingle, just mayo & butter.
But since i did not order their signature dish, i shall give the benefit of the doubt that their buffalo wings are wonderful, since i saw many diners ordering that. Or maybe they did it for the challenge.
Total damage for the evening:
$13.50 |Fried Button Mushrooms
$15.50 |Fish & Chips
$11.50 |BLT Sandwich
-------------------------
$40.50 |Total
Price inclusive of GST & Service charge.
Will I return to the Sunset Grill & Pub?
YEAH! not for the food, but for the atmosphere. I do think that the journey to the place is more interesting/intriguing than the food itself.

Gem of a Find
My family and friends have been back to Sunset Grill, time and time again. We just adore the simplicity of it all -- ice cold beer in hand, just watching the planes take off/come in especially as the sun sets... Kids have a place to run too, which is great for parents just wanting to chill out.
Most would order the Buffalo wings, which are served in various levels of spiciness. We find Spicy Level 2, just nice, to still taste the chicken. Spicy Level 3 was too hair-raising and tongue-numbing for us!! For the faint-hearted, there are non-spicy fried wings, which are tasty enough. Mini burgers also make good food with beer.
If I'm not wrong, re-development of Seletar is on the pipeline and this little charm, nestled amidst English-sounding streets like Baker Street, Picadilly Circus, may be no more. We think that will be a sad day indeed.

Er, quite average food leh...
Ate here today with the family. Got hopelessly lost as expected, but I guess that's part of the experience!
We made reservations, which was lucky as the place was really croweded on a Sat evening. There must have been 120-130 people around, mostly large groups of twenty-somethings and families. There's a small aircon area, and a large outdoor area; most people opted for the latter. Since it was a hot day, us wimps opted for the former :)
Since it was crowded, the waitstaff told us to expect a wait of 1h for the food. They however were considerate and sent out my son's hotdog earlier (after ~15 min) so my kids didn't get too hungry, which was a nice touch.
The kids' meals (hot dog, fish + chips) were pretty ordinary. My wife's spaghetti aglio olio was average, and a bit heavy on the garlic even for me (and I'm a garlic-lover). My baby-back ribs were pretty average as well, reasonably tender, but not that flavourful. Though I must say the coleslaw that came with it was quite good - a generous amount of tangy lime added to it help cut the 'jer-lak' feeling with the ribs.
Overall, the food is OK only - not spectacular, and I think it's more for the atmosphere than the food that people come.

One of a Kind
My missus and i decided to give this place a try cause we wanted somewhere with a nice ambience and my my... Sunset Grill did not dissapoint at all. Located deep inside Seletar East Camp, the setting is like no other.
The first thing that catches your attention is that your vehicle is travelling on the same roads that planes actually travel on.. How many restaurants and pubs do you know of that is situated right beside an airstrip? LOL.
Being in the middle of a former army base, Sunset grill is really peaceful and really makes one feel that they are far away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The rustic old world charm of this place is unspoilt by Jerry (the owner)who set up the place with very plain tables and plastic stools! All under the branches of a very old tree.
There is no blaring background music and it is very easy to hold a conversation especially if you are in the alfresco area. Serving staffs are attentive to diners needs and ice water was even provided without request even though we ordered beers.
Our (over)order consist of :
1.) lvl 2 buffulo wings (half dozen)
2.) fries
3.) Pan fried Fish (main)
4.) Chili Con Carne ("main")
5.) 2 x Heineken
The buffulo wings here are famous and a must try but i am not a fan of extremely hot food so we ordered a lvl 2 just to try and that already made in break out in sweat. The sauce used is sour and spicy. i would have to say that it goes rather well with the wings and it would be a hit with people who like "burning" their tongues. We managed to down only 2 each along with copious amount of fries before the mains arrived. I would recommand diners to ask for the sauce on the side, so that "non-spicy food eaters" can also enjoy.
The fries were normal thick cut fries presented in a basket. Portion was generous and probably enough for 4 persons.
I had Pan fried fish for mains and she had Chili Con Carne. Frankly, when the mains arrived, we were already half full thanks to the beer and fries.
The Pan fried fish seem to be whole side of dory pan fried in nothing but salt and a litte spices. It appears to be oily but is in fact the juices from the fish. Its served with classic baked potato and sauteed greens. The dish is topped with toasted almond flakes, adding to not just presentation but also the taste of the fillet.
The Chili Con Carne came served with 2 very fragrant garlic bread and the Con Carne appeared to have been baked in the ceramic bowl. Overall taste is pleasant, even though it is a tat too watery. The taste of beef, beans and chilli were well balanced but i feel that it could do with a little more cheese.
I would also like to mention that the salad certainly looks good and it seems a popular order with diners on the day of our visit. Crowd consists of office groups, couples and causcasian families.
Total damaged dealt to the wallet was almost $70, not including petrol which i think would be considerable given the difficulty to get to the place, but true to the the mastercard commercial ending, ambience = priceless.

I HAVE THE MAP!!!
This is place is ridiculous to find. They have a map in the menu, so I took a pic of it and will be putting it below. Hope it's useful.
Staff didn't actually give us much help when we called. Told us to call back 'cos they needed the line for a credit card payment. Finally, after asking for directions and making about a dozen wrong turns, we made it. (couple of potholes to look out for)
The food was worthwhile though. We ordered level 1 and level 4 wings. level 1 already brought some heat to the face. but level 4 broke out the sweat. You feel a sense of accomplishmet when you're done though. sauce is unique and tastes really quite good. Nachos that came with salsa, cheese, beef thingy, sour cream and jalepenos. YUMMY!!! Of cos not mixed together. Fried battered prawns and calamari were pretty ordinary. Cheese fries... not too bad.. My friend's burger with egg, bacon and cheese add-ons looked pretty darn good. plus 2 jugs of beer. Gave us our total of $138.
Definitely worth the trip there. (even if you get lost)
