Great food.

Great food, good service and wonderful place although hard to get there if you don't wanna take a cab or drive.

It's beside the beach man!

The food was scrumptious. The rainbow rolls and dragon rolls are the first ever sushi that I tasted and actually LOVED it.

The katsu don I had was wonderful.

Even though portions were not that spectacular but the entire group of us ate till we were full.

Must Tries: Dragon roll, rainbow roll, sesame ice cream

Why did I bother...

to try a "new" restaurant when the end result is as expected? Well, choice of destination is not always a personal one I guess and running out of "new" places to try in the east side. Anyway, was told that I have to try the salmon belly soup since I almost never eat in fast food sushi places so why not give it another shot.

Salmon belly soup - soup tasteless salmon still have some scales...fail
Natto Handroll - seaweed "lao hong" did not even bother to re-toast, natto ok but I love natto so...
Salmon Avocado Handroll - again seaweed issue
Ikura Handroll - ikura "watery" tasting terrible quality then gain what am i expecting...
Ika sushi - fresh
California Maki - as good as a supermarket one
Ebiko avocado maki (something like that) - terrible so stale had to get it replaced, worst that supermarket times 5. Replacement much better same as supermarket standard.

Rattan chairs seats facing carpark were terribly uncomfortable as it slants backwards. Not ideal for eating but Sushi tei is no chill out place. Service is not spectacular but very standard so not going to complain.

Average

Journeyed to Big Splash for lunch one afternoon and chanced upon a newly opened Sushi Tei outlet without the usual crowds that throng its other outlets. Decided to give it a try since the last time I ate at Sushi Tei was probably about 4 years ago at the outlet near my place. As Sushi Tei is relatively well known, I shall just do a quick writeup on it.

Located just opposite The Seafood International Market & Restaurant, Sushi Tei offers a view of the carpark driveway and a glimpse of East Coast Park through its floor to ceiling windows. And the problem with huge glass windows in the afternoon is the heat that penetrates through, which fortunately, was minimal during my visit.

Jo Una Ju - This was essentially unagi with rice. I didn't get to try it but I understand that it was quite salty from the excessive sauce and I guess the substantial leftovers supported that point.

Oyako Don - A staple dish in most Japanese restaurants, the oyako don didn't really impress much with its less than flavourful egg and chicken cubes. But served steaming hot, it was actually still quite palatable especially with its soft sticky rice. And for $8 a serving, it sure beats what sakae sushi's offering hands down.

Golden Roll - Its actually the first time I'm trying something like this and honestly, I liked it quite a fair bit. Prawn pieces sandwiched between rice, just like sushi and layered with mango strips. Sweetness from the prawn and the mango - a very complementing taste. But its $13 for 6 rolls, which is really quite expensive.

Overall an average meal for a not so average pricing, standing at about $44. But having said that, I would definitely prefer dining at Sushi Tei as opposed to Sakae Sushi, which IMHO serves unpalatable food. Service could be friendlier but I like the place for being crowd free - something that would probably change soon given the brand's popularity.

See all my pictures here.

New and Clean but boring view

It was good decision to go there earlier. It's just before 7:00pm and crowded. But fortunately no one was waiting when we arrived and we were guided to the seat in front of the big window. When we went back, 10 few customers were waiting and jammed in front of the casher.

We ordered;
Kan Buri Sushi : $4
Tororo Salad : $6
Hotate Miso Mayo : $8
Potato Croquette : $2.8
Madako (Octopus) Carpaccio : $10
Ebi&Yasai Don : $8
Tekka Maki : $2.2
Towel x2 : $0.4

Kan Buri sushi ... taste is OK but a little bit dry in the surface and texture was slightly hard. No way in mid-class Japanese restaurant.
Tororo salad ... Yamaimo (Tororo potato) was a few. I expected more, twice as much as it was. A bit disappointed. Taste was so so.
Yamaimo is the only one kind of potato which can be eaten raw. Cooking is easy, just cut or grate it. Calorie is low and good for diet. it also give us stamina. I am hoping we can eat everywhere in Singapore. Potato can be stored for a long time.
Hotate Miso Mayo ... Hotate was small and it disappointed us. Miso Mayo taste was too salty for us though overall was OK. I recommend to mix Miso with Mirin (sweet sake seasoning) by 2:1 to soften salty taste.
Potato Croquette ... quite normal potato croquette but good. Fried properly. That is all and important.
Madako Carpaccio ... terrible. source is so so but octopus itself was quite low quality. Texture is the essence of octopus but far below standard. Worst in my life. No way in mid-class Japanese restaurant.
Ebi &Yasai Don ... this is nice. price is OK, volume is OK. If I dare to say one thing, sweet soy source was too little. It should have been poured in to the rice, not only the topping ("Kakiage" =Tempura) That's Japanese style.
Tekka Maki ... Standard. Cost performance is good.

Towel costed $0.2. Why does they charge for towel? They can add its cost to other menu. I feel strange we are charged for towel even it is quite cheap. But no way in Singapore ?

On the other hand, we were not charge for green tea. I saw Green tea was $2 on the menu and I thought we were charged. They poured several times when it was empty or less. After all, it was disappeared on the bill. Good.

There are several Sushi Tei in Singapore. This is a good place so far. Everything is new and clean, some menu should be improved though. We may have to wait for 1 year to see their real service and quality of food. I hope it won't turn into a child playground.

Must Tries: Kan Buri
