I finally managed to convince my partner to head down to swiss grill for a long awaited lunch on saturday.
By the time i got there (along with my father), it was already slightly after two, so not difficult to get at table. In fact, the whole place seemed pretty empty if you ask me. Its all al fresco, and while it was a hot day, we were promptly served with ice water so the heat was somewhat bearable.
In any event, we had the following:
Spicy italian sausages - house made pork sausages with spices (2 pieces of sausages and served with mashed potato and purple cabbage)
2 orders of the Swiss portabello burger - grilled premium chuck beef, bacon, emmental cheese, cream portobello mushroom with 2 orders of chunky fries and mesclun salad
Apple Spritzer
I had the spicy Italian sausages (to assuage my sausage craving that I had been holding within for the longest time) and this came served atop a bed of mash and a small (but sufficient) serving of purple cabbage. The mash was decent, but nothing out of the ordinary. The sausages were somewhat spicy (but not that spicy) and according to my dad, slightly too salty. But I thought both spiciness and saltiness were balanced out by the very neutral mash. The sausages were also grilled nicely (with no burnt carbon bits that are carcinogenic) and their skin crisp. The purple cabbage was essentially a purple coleslaw and while I was very happy for its crunchy tangyness although I must say when the menu stated “purple cabbage” I was expecting sauerkraut. Portion size this was enough to fill me up but not so that I was completely full.
My partner and father both had the swiss portabello burgers and this was a huge burger! (I think all their burgers are of decent size to begin with) Both of them enjoyed their burgers, saying that it was very good. Coming from my partner who does not really care for burgers, this must mean something. The side of mesclun and chunky fries (for an additional $2.50) was also in my view, worth it as an add on as it was a good serving of fries (how can you have a burger without fries) and greens to complete the meal. The “chunky fries” weren’t all that chunky, on middle ground between chunky and shoestring. Did appreciate the fact that the fries weren’t overfried or soggy. Golden brown and somewhat crisp.
We also had a bottle of apple spritzer (after I observed an European family ordering three bottles of the same for their very young children) because it was so cheap! 500ml at $1.90. The apple spritzer is essentially carbonated apple juice (highly likely from concentrate). It was a more refined and less carbonated zapple and while I enjoyed it (and drank most of the 500ml) my father and partner did not care much for it.
We did request for “less salt” on the burgers and fries and were very obligingly accommodated by the kitchen. In fact, the chef sent the waitstaff out to clarify if it was “no salt” or “less salt” and we do appreciate him taking the time to inquire and accommodate our requests. No problems with service (even though there was only one waitress on duty doubling up as both waitress, server, and cashier!) which was polite and as promptly efficient as could be from one person.
I did venture into the store (which as a butchery sells meat, sausages, ham and the likes) and realized that if you were prepared to cook the sausages on your own, they would be very cheap. The spicy Italian sausages I saw were vacuumed pack and hanging in their fridges for around $5 or even lesser (for other varieties of sausages). I would have bought a ton of sausages to bring back and cook myself but was mindful that my partner does not like sausages (processed bits of ground up mystery meat) and neither does my father (who thinks sausages and ham being smoked will give me cancer). Better cut down anyway and just wait for the next opportunity to come back and have more sausages!
We were rather satisfied with our experience at swiss grill and will be back.

E. and I visited this place, on a burger rampage. We weren't spared from the stuffy outdoor seating, even though it was touted to rain that day. In that sense, the Grill scores low on setting. It could possibly be cooler at night though.
The chef was patient as he explained the menu. Kudos to him btw for stepping out of the kitchen to attend to us! He knew exactly what he was talking about, and The waitress was apparently away. So, E. ordered the Bacon and Cheese Burger, with chunky fries and Mesclun Salad, while I had the Marinated Cod burger. We requested for cold water, and it came perfectly spiked with lemon.
E. loved his burger. The bacon was done just nice. The beef was fresh and juicy, and the accompanying sauce went well with the meats. Similarly, I'd have to give top marks to my Cod Burger - the best fish burger I'd ever eaten. Ok, BOTH of us had ever eaten. I had the mayo served on the side, and frankly, I think the burger would do just as nice, if not, better, without it. The marinade had the perfect blend of tanginess that accentuated the fish's flavour. My only gripe about it, would be the bun. It was too moist and was getting rather mushy when the juices from the cod ran. Granted, it wasn't your usual run-of-the-mill sesame seed bun, I detected tomato and parmesan flavours in it.
The chunky fries were just nicely salted and gave enough oomph to the rest of the meal. The mesclun salad was typical, but passable nevertheless.
All in all, one of the best burgers on this sunny island. Perfect for satisfying meat cravings! I hope the Grill guys look into expanding their selection of greens on the menu though. The prices are a bit steep, true, but that's what you get for quality!

Swiss Butchery has built up a brand name over the past few years supplying raw meats to establishments as well as providing top notch meats for some easy home cooking. Recently though, they have taken this one step further, by providing cooked food for busy people who want to eat good quality meats without the "foo-fa".
With only outdoor seating, dinner is a more feasible option for this place these days given the heat wave that we are facing. I recently had the chance to try the menu here, and am putting forward my thoughts on the items that I tried.
1) Angus 200-days Grain-Fed Ribeye ($36.90) - This was executed well, and Swiss Grill was true to their word in letting the meat do the talking.
2)Sausages - The sausages met my expectations. I felt that the Pork and Cheese Sausages could have done with a little more cheese and the Spicy Italian Sausages were a bit mild.
3) Burger With the Lot ($13.90) - This would go well with burger lovers who love good minced beef on a fluffy bun. The difference between the burger here and those of many places is that they do not try to do too much with the burger. In other words, this is a typical American burger.
4) Irish Stew ($18.90) - This rendition served here is really heavy with strong flavours and could fill up a big man like me.
Finally, people who are looking for some roughage after all this meat in their system would do well to try the salad. It is done with good fresh leaves with a good crunch on each bite with a pleasantly sour vinaigrette finish.
