| fusion and traditional japanese food
This place doesn't look particularly exciting from the outside but there's plenty of choice and variety in the menu. If you want standard fare like sushi set or donburi, this isn't the place. If you feel like a change, Tahtan's serves tasty Japanese food with a twist, at very reasonable prices.
The sashimi salad here is really good - fresh sashimi arranged on a bed of watercress and shredded radish with a garnish of pickled red pepper. The comfort food here is also yummy - the pork stew and hamburg steak are good though not great, but the price can't be beat.
I particularly recommend the cod fish roe pasta, which has spaghetti tossed with a generous amount of roe in a creamy sauce and garnished with seaweed. I've recently eaten at both the Italian restaurants flanking Tahtan's (Casa Roma and Pasta Fresca) and the pasta dish I had here was the best of all 3.
The desserts here are made from scratch and delicious. The cheesecake was rich but not dense, spiked with citrus favour and small pieces of pineapple. The adzuki ice cream was also homemade and was creamy through having lots of ground adzuki beans in it rather than adding butterfat. Neither dessert was too sweet. I couldn't believe they only cost $3 each!
In fact, everything on the menu seems like good value: we paid $70 for 2, with 3 courses and booze. Service is discreet and attentive, though that might be because the restaurant is pretty small and we were the only ones there at the time. It's run by a Japanese lady who comes out to chat once in a while. The decor is cute, a little bit kitsch, and the atmosphere is very relaxed. There's outdoor seating as well. |
